OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

i'm not worried about folder stuff now as its just me in my own place ATM. but could you please answer my other question on the last page?

Setting ACL's from Windows as root works mostly with Win7 or XP professional
but not with home editions (And you cannot use deny rules from Windows at all)

But you can set folder ACL via napp-it's ACL extension.
Resetting ACL, user ACL and trivial ACL like everyone@ are free options.

Yea.. Works on Win7 but not Win2k8R2...

However, I tried to create a OI user "Administrator" but for some reason machine logged on as administrator dont have access.... however if I have userX, and a machine with userX and the same password can access without any pw prompt. perhaps there is something special with the user administrator.

nothing spcial, just a user on OI without default permissions like user root..

Having a little trouble installing Napp-it on a new build.
This is the output of the install command:

Having trouble to share a ZFS datastore created with Napp-it with ESXI (all in one approach).
Did a new build based on
- ESXI 5.0U1
- OI 151a5
- napp-it 0.8k
Followed gea's "all in One" tutorial and succeeded in most areas, e.g. SMB shares can be accessed from WIN7 - no issues and performance is fine.

However, I have difficulties creating a VMware datastore on the ZFS pool and export it via NFS back to ESXi. Napp-it Settings:
  • Created the pool smb share "nfs" and set it to be shared via nfs.
  • Set FOLDER-ACL (O,G,E) to o=full, e=modi and SMB-SHARE-all to full_set.
In ESXi I can mount the nfs share and can access it via the file browser.
However, when creating a VM on the nfs share, the ESXI operation freezes at 100% (completion status) and never finishes.
ESXI seems to be affected as it is no longer abler to shut-down the OI VM or delete the (uncompletely created) VM on nfs datastore.
Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

I think ESXi requires V3 acls, not V4. I just chown the folder to nobody:nobody, mode 755. The set sharenfs to "[email protected]" (the IP of ESXi). If this is exported via nfs why are you setting smb-share?

v4 works too, however, if you're not also doing [email protected] you'll have problems. esxi runs as root and mounts as root so just copy the ACL from RW into root and it should work fine.

Is anyone running ZFS on non VT-d (Direct I/O path) hardware? Is it needed? or will VT-x work? I have a Dell 1950 PE that I run my ESX 5.0 on now that I would like to use.

I assume you are asking about an all-in-one setup? That's the only reason you would care about vt-d (for pci passthru). If not doing that, you don't care, and vt-x is NOT the same that is CPU virtualization.

Yeah I was thinking an all in one with a SAS expansion. So to be clear the answer is no it wont work?

I have an 1156 setup I can use although I had hoped to stay with enterprise class hardware.

You wont be able to pass the controller to zfs Operating system. You can create large vmdk but you will lose SMART and its just messy replacing drive

Put vmdk offline, go into esxi remove, and the insert disk, make vmdk, give it to vm Zfs

Too messy

you can do that or you can set ACLs example everyone@=full or modify

advantage of using ACL:
compatible with SMB (I share my NFS folder also via SMB for file/snap access)
ACL inheritance

!! setting ACLs does not affect already created files.
You must modify/ reset ACL recursively to modify ACL of already created files
(ex. napp-it ACL extension - free option)

in my environment i can't do everyone ... i try to avoid using full subnets too if i can avoid it. good to know though.

disk replace, see
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/819-5461/gbcet/index.html

if you use napp-it < 0.8i, there was an update in 0.8i
wth replacing discs based on disc GUID instead of id
http://www.napp-it.org/downloads/changelog.html
this may solve this problem too

Updated to 0.8k and the problem still exists. I really dont' want to screw up replacing the disk and cause more problems for myself. However i did try to do it via command line and kept getting errors I have included an additional screenshot that shows the zpool status's

zfs3.PNG

Just wondering if anyone tried this

There is a file manager android app called ES File Explorer, it support SMB, however I can't get it to authenticate to SMB over wifi, I keep getting "Login failure"

If anyone else got an android device and is willing to give it a try let me know.

Thanks!

I'm on Droid bionic and have the same issue. Is there a fix to access via es file manager? It sees the server and will logon as guest but no file access
Even tryed root login but won't accept that login

The usual way to solve problems due to missing disks is
- disk replace GUID -> new disk
- or add a hotspare to the pool

btw
- what replace command did you tried
- error messages?

and
a 10disk raid-z1 is way to much. The possibility of a two disk failure is too high

What OS are you using..?

I'm also experiencing this with Nexenta while my OI test VM is having no problems with my TF 101 tablet and AC Ryan mediaplayer.

Hi guys I'm trying to setup my cyberpower UPS but have been unsuccessful =(

At first I thought I installed the wrong drivers but

for x86_64 i get

pwrstatd: Cannot find /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

for i386 i get

So I did a uname -i -> i86pc ? so is my OI install 32bit or 64 bit so confuse. Check google and it said "Solaris uses a common code base for the platforms it supports: SPARC and i86pc (which includes both x86 and x86-64)" ?_?

can I some how install the missing lib ?

there was also .deb and .rpm drivers but I only remember using .tar

thank guys still trying to get used to all these commands

I suppose its just a Linux application that will not run on OI/Unix

I suppose its just a Linux application that will not run on OI/Unix
And it doesn't appear they provide source so it could be recompiled on anything else.

Another angle to consider if you're using a virtualization tool is a session just running tools for it. Under ESXi you'd run their SUSE-based vMA (virtual management agent) virtual machine. The idea being you'd use this to do the monitoring and have it send messages up to the hypervisor and possibly other guests for handling an orderly shutdown.

You need to set up the Cyberpower software inside the VMWare vMA (which is running a version of Linux -- it would also be possible to set it up in another Linux VM). I don't think it will run under OpenSolaris. Doing it inside the vMA is pretty easy and that VM takes up little resources. It will be able to issue the shutdown command to VMWare when the power is low, and if you set up VMWare shutdown properly, will safely shut down all your VMs in the correct order. The management software will then run on the vMA, but you can access that with any web browser.

I only have OI on the nas no esxi = (

only an option

a little script (shell script + cron or napp-it job) that pings two devices in
your lokal network ex router, wlan access point, switch etc every minute.
when both fails, you have a power failure-

write a file to /tmp with a counter
if ping after next minute is ok, delete the file

otherwise counter=counter +1

if counter is >10 (10 minute power off): start a shutdown

But
If you have a power failure, there are no writes.
A hard power-off will not affect data security on a ZFS filesystem

Interesting that could be an option

A power failure wont corrupt zfs?

Once a got a power failure and when nappit booted up afs service had error had to reboot and after that t was all good

worst case in a hard power off is you lose the last write commit either by not having a zil device that can properly commit to flash before losing power (super caps or ddrdrive/zeusram) or part of the writes were still in the drive write cache and weren't flushed or only partially flushed.

this can leave the pool in a bad state however you can roll back to one of the previous 127 states via import -F and one of those will be good.

I only have OI on the nas no esxi = (
Which is fine, using ESXi is free for the basic hypervisor and if you've got a motherboard that supports VT-d then it's a handy way to run something like a napp-it 'all in one' box.

There are other tools for monitoring UPSes. One tool is NUT: http://www.networkupstools.org

Supposedly it has the ability to run all kinds of operating systems. I've gotten it to compile, but have not yet installed it on OI. I had to add the system/library/math/head-math package in the Package Manager (an error related to not having math.h)

I'm debating 'where' I want to run this sort of thing. For me I'd prefer to have the ESXi box handling as much of itself internally as possible.

I've learned over the years not to depend on detection of problems using network links and such, as any problems they might have do not necessarily mean the server should panic and start shutting down. So while a crude method like ping can be made to work, it puts you at the mercy of network connectivity or reliability. I prefer a server taking as big a step as shut down to REALLY know what's happening. But then we also have a generator on site so it's not often than we really have to deal with actual shutdowns. But it's good to be prepared...

So I'm considering having the OI guest VM handling it by passing the usb connection from the UPS. Then have NUT send a message 'up' to the ESXi host. Alternatively I could have a vMA guest do the same thing.

Kk i will leave it plug into my ups for time being

Thinking about an esxi lab and pfsense wonder if i one machine can do both

trying to access my zfs from my andriod

try SMB on ES file xplorer cannot login

try cifs manager

You can try apcupsd. It works on OI but I could only get it to run with an APC ups. May need to get an apc ups if you so desire.

Also, I found SambaExplorer worked for me, although slow and not a great interface

Anyone have any experience using this script in OpenIndiana:
http://blog.laspina.ca/ubiquitous/updated-zfs-replication-and-snapshot-rollup-script
I have ssh a setup and am able to connect between boxes without a password but am having trouble getting the actual script to run.

I place the script and list file (hosts.list) in /root using winscp and made sure they were executable.
Contents of list file is:
ZFS1/ZFS1,192.168.16.9,192.168.16.8

I then SSH’d into 192.168.16.9 and invoked the script with “pfexec ./zfs-replication.sh hosts.list”
It just goes right back to the command prompt and doesn’t run anything.
If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it. Also if anyone know of a different script or process I am all ears.
Thanks!
