There's little question at this point that the logistics in Sochi, from hotel rooms to public infrastructure, are a mess, but one of the greatest threats to visitors is one they can't even see. According to NBC, it's a near-guarantee that connected devices are being watched by hackers within Russia, who use malware downloaded on smartphones and laptops to steal personal information.

Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, reflected the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms.

I love the Olympics, there's nothing better than watching other countries snipe at the host because reasons.
 
NBC (all the networks really) have been spreading anti-Russian propaganda for weeks now, maybe months. Most of it petty crap that China and London had the same issues with (such as facilities not quite being ready).
 
I saw the original report, it did not make ANY of the issues clear, and instead sold the premise that just traveling to Sochi and turning on your computer, you were fucked.

That the hacks were so powerful your PC/phone was doomed. They were deliberately fear mongering, and to what end I have no idea. Just looking for coverage, retweets, whatever.

Meantime, the same idiotic required behavior would get you powned on the spot anywhere on earth that has the internet. Pretty pathetic, typical NBC, the people who brought you the exploding pickup trucks.... that they rigged to esplode for the sake of sensationalism.
