Old School Gaming (Issues #1-9)

Damn I love these old ads, makes me wish I would've kept all of my old CGW's from the 90s for nostalgia.

Keep 'em coming!

Terra Nova was an awesome game, I played the hell out of that demo. Too bad Looking Glass had to fold... :(

why is there a picture of a big hammer when they are talking about quake?

quake was supposed to have this big lightning hammer a la Thor, but it got nixed from the final release

BBS's > Internet

sadly, .... they're gone. (minus Telnet boards).

that's funny. an article on the benifits of upgrading a 25Mhz machine with a pentium overdrive. nowadays, we fart 25Mhz. if it's not going to increase my speed by 500Mhz, it's not worth my time.:p

OMG, built around two independent instruction pipelines! I want one....as a key chain. I'm wondering if that mpeg board would even fit in my system since it is so damn long. Keep em coming Forcemac.

You know, a month ago we moved into our new house, and started unpacking all my keepsakes from the years. One that captured my attention for an hour was that issue above, with the arrival of Quake. When you first started your threads, I immediately thought of it. I may take some pictures of some of my old magazines (back to the mid 80s). I love the trips through nostalgia.

Is that retail price $69.95?

And I thought games were expensive now.

Just going through these old magazines, you see a lot more "adult" games...some ads even opposite "children's software" sections of the magazine...now I know why I like B00Bs! so much......haha

Or you could just go to fark and beat off to all the hyperlinks you get from those guys.

Seriously, do you need to beat off to pixels that badly?

Here was a popular one, but I never Got into it...just didn't seem fun.

The other, has to be my first frustration of a terrible port of a fun game. Thanks to MAME, we can know enjoy life's past pleasures!

I am beginning to wonder if the Japanese got the Idea for sex games from us?

That last ad is great. The NEC "Double Speed" CD-Rom drive..wow..i remember paying that much money for a CD, sound card and poop set of speakers, sadly.

Did anybody else's spine shiver when you saw Kellie the Psychologist's face in the second picture?

IT'S A MAN!!!

One request... resize the pictures. Please for the love of my browser. 1112 x 1592 pixels is insane.

I've already got my monitor set to that and I can still read the text from fifty feet away. Why not compromise by having a smaller picture in the forum and then linking it to a larger one for those with 20/700 vision.

They spelled Baghdad wrong in the PoP2 add! Write the magazine and send the letter back to 1993! I'd tell you to email it but Al Gore hadn't perfected the internet back then. These old mags are great. I found an old gaming mag I have from 1995 last summer when I was cleaning and kept it cause it had some Game Gear codes I may still want to use (that and I'm nostalgic).

I didn't notice that, but I'll tell you the funny I got out of it. I am only running 1024x768, so I had to scroll the window to see all the images. When I got to that ad, I noticed that the last "lady" listed was "Kellie the Psycho" and I immediately thought "Well hell, aren't they all?"

I dont know what game you are thinking of, but it isnt MOM... Here is a quote about MOM from a faq I found:
In Master of Magic (MOM), you begin as a humble wizard, ruler of a small
hamlet and a few soldiers. At first your magical powers are weak, but will
grow as you research spells and acquire magical resources. You send out
colonies to expand your borders. Your armies and magical creatures search
for treasure, expand your empire by conquest, and defend your realm from
rampaging monsters and enemy wizards. As your fame grows, powerful heros
join your cause. To win you must either defeat all the other wizards or
become powerful enough to cast the awesome Spell of Mastery. Of course, the
other Wizards are trying to defeat you.

There are 6 types of magic, and hundreds of spells. There are 14 races
to choose from, play against, and conquer. You can design your own wizard,
selecting types of magic and special abilities, or select one of 14 wizards
provided. You will be able to produce many different types of soldiers and
fighting units, and summon many different types of magical creatures. There
are more than 30 different heros with diverse abilities that may appear to
aid your cause.

MOM is programmed by SIMTEX for MicroProse. MOM and another
SIMTEX/MicroProse game, Master of Orion (MOO), have several features in
common (diplomacy, colonization, research, economic development). MOM also
has similarities with such games as CIV and Warlords II.

Heh heh, I sure am.. we're talking old school here remember?! ;)

Also, One thing I've noticed thats cool is we are finally at the point where the games today actually look as good as the box art of games in the past, whereas back then they weren't even close :D

I remember almsot everything posted here lol...how sad is that.

Old school games were better produced than they are today. Not nearly the same amount of sloppy coding. (with 25 mhz and 2 megs of ram you really dont have a choice hehe)
