Old school console music...

When it comes to old school console music, only 2 words even matter to me: Chrono Trigger.

Seriously, it's not even close IMO.

edit: check this out if you've never played http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDANk9wjw3k

Never did play the game. I checked out the youtube link. I think one of the things we have to keep in mind is that there is always going to be the nostalgia effect. In other words, some of these pieces are going to mean much more to us because we associate them to emotions stirred by the game itself when a particular theme was playing...and the appeal only grows over time. The link I posted at the top, for instance, I hadn't heard it in nearly 25 years. Just stumbled across it and the memories all flooded back.

Do you happen to know if Uematsu did the music for Chrono Trigger? For me, FF II has the same effect as Chrono Trigger does on you. That game had some of the best music of all-time, done by Uematsu.

Awesome! How would I submit my own remixes? Is there somekind of prerequisite for doing so?

I'm not to sure, I assume you need to create an account and log into the forums. I haven't registered there.

Long time listener but never a first time caller :p

Castlevania IV is also right at the top of my list. One of the most dark, ominous themes I've ever heard in a game and they still hold up today. Check these out:

Absolutely amazing stuff. Konami always did have the best music in those days. Again, it's probably the nostalgia effect in part, but I can't help but feel nobody's writing stuff like this anymore.

Music for Chrono Trigger was done mostly by Yasunori Mitsuda, but several tracks were also done by Uematsu (Mitsuda let him take over since he had fallen ill or something iirc).

Also, if you've never played Chrono Trigger (or the sequal, Chrono Cross), do yourself a favor and check them out. They are both on the PSN store for $10 each, and CT was recently rereleased on DS too. DEFINITELY worth playing if you are even a mild fan of JRPGs.

I can't, I never played Castlevania III. Did that even come out in the US?

All kinds of good old school music out there. One I particularly liked not because it was the world's best music but just because of the cool style was Akumajou Densetsu, which is the Japanese version of Castlevania 3. The thing was the Famicom had extra input pins that a memory mapper could use to send more sound channels to the system. So Akumajou Densetsu had a new mapper, the VRC6, which contained two variable duty square wave generators and a sawtooth generator. Those added on to the NES's built in pulse wave, triangle wave, and noise generators.

So while Castlevania 3's music was pretty NES standard, Akumajou Densetsu and some more tonaly complex music with a lovely gravely sound to it. It is quite a unique sound, I'm not aware of other things that use a similar sound generation scheme.

Indeed.. best Game ever. I hope square pulls its head out of its ass and makes a worthy sequel to it someday.

Just not anytime soon, SquareEnix couldnt pull of a Chrono game if they tried judging by FFXIII or FXIIII 2

Are you a Bad enough Dude to handle the awesomeness of this song?

Talk about awesome music for one of the most frustrating levels :p

They do remixes on a lot of the old music's. Been going there for years and they have quite a few gems.

This remix of Final Doom is absolutely mind bogglin!

Interesting. I know this piece backwards and forwards, but I know I've never played Castlevania III. I think they used this track in CIV because the version I remember has much better samples.
