Old school console music...

I vaguely remember F-Zero having a pretty good sound track. Had to look it up, yep.

Heck yeah! F-Zero is one of the best games ever. My Dad and I used to play it when I was younger and we would try to beat each others lap times on Mute City 1. I got it down to 23 seconds I think. Good Times. Big Blue is my fav.

Super Hydlide. The game itself was okay, but it had some wonderfully atmospheric music.

And I'm honestly amazed one word hasn't been invoked yet in this thread: Falcom.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who would've remembered this game. Good call dude!

The best track in this game was actually called "Dragon!!!!" (you could play the tracks in the options menu). Haven't heard it in nearly 25 years...I'll see if I can find it.

I'm sure most of you by now love the old school music and if you don't know about it already , head over to http://ocremix.org/ there are many many great remixes by composers there and new content is uploaded and shared all the time.

ahahaha I love it.. Im a dj and I sometimes remix tracks with dub step like zelda and ect.. I love things like this!

So much win in this thread....my additions

Chrono Triggers music is so good I wouldn't even call is "old school" and Chrono Crosses is even better and its defenitly not "old school" or at least 8 bit.

But this bad ass style of music isn't completely dead....A little diddy on Nintendo DS calld devil survivor had this song.....when it plays you know shits about to go down.

And sadly this thread depresses me. As graphics have improved tremendously throughout the years, music has been put in the back seat and catchy tunes have all but disappeared.

I honestly can't seem to think of a major release in the past decade which I actually remember it's soundtrack.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

I'm convinced that the best video game score ever made is Star Fox.

One, the composer is legendary because that's all he composed. And the way the first six tracks lead into each other is masterful.

In terms of a more objective stand point music has improved. The profile of composers involved in gaming is now higher. Higher production budgets have resulted in overall better presentation. Journey became the first game soundtrack to be nominated for a Grammy. Also technology, in terms of how sound is reproduced, has also improved.

There is course the preference factor in which nostalgia plays a role however but I don't think it is fair to expect the industry to necessarily cater to that. After all some people also have a nostalgia preference for older style graphics as well.

That is why I also mentioned the Journey Grammy nomination. In terms broader appeal (including critically) game music has also improved significantly in terms of recognition. Those involved also recognize this and game soundtrack releases are the norm now (for almost every game).

However like I mentioned music is rather personal so one's own preference is just that but is the important for that individual.

So, why not mention it again? I haven't read this thread in months and forgot all about that link.

I'll list some of my favourites, even though arcades had better music in general.

Ristar Music Theatre - Shooting Ristar (1-1)
Ristar Music Theatre - Ring Rink (5-1)

Here's some quality electronic music
My absolute fav: Streets of Rage 3 - The Poets 2 [Genesis] Music

Streets of Rage 3 - Bulldozer [Genesis] Music
Streets of Rage 3 - The Poets 1 [Genesis] Music
Streets of Rage 3 - Moon [Genesis] Music

Streets of Rage 3 has some crazy hard-techno tunes. This Yuzo Koshiro guy is simply amazing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuzo_Koshiro

Bonus track:
Final Fight CD OST - Warehouse
The original and WAY better track: Final Fight (Arcade) - Warehouse

Way overdue for a bump.

And let me get my 2 cents in on the debate about whether video game music has improved or gotten worse over time. I'm a composer, 36 years of age so video games had a huge impact on me naturally. The reason a lot of people say music has devolved is simple. Yes nostalgia is always part of it, but the main reason is this. Ever since the CD era of gaming began, composers finally had the memory to actually record live. When that happened, there was no reason game music needed to be of a different quality than a TV show or a movie, and by now there is no difference. We compose precisely the same way for all mediums.

So why do people feel it was better before? Simple, when you've only got square waves and a handful of voices to work with, you can't fake it. You can't color it. You can't use tricks. You better get the melody right, because that's all you've got pal. Must have been brutal for mediocre composers, your talent level is front and center. No hiding. And the end result is about 20 years of melodies we'll never get out of our heads again. It's not that we can't compose music like the old days, just think about how that would work with today's games. It wouldn't. Give me an 8-bit game to work on, and it's a different story.

For me personally, it's not that the music was better or worse, but melody-based music will always be more memorable...especially when matched with a memorable game.

The wonderful thing is that we now have decades worth of game music to choose from. From the quirky, to intense, to just downright beautiful. Add to that the great many orchestrations of classic music and we have quite literally thousands of hours of music to listen to now. (If you've never heard of the Orchestral Game Concerts, I heartily suggest you do so now.)

Oh man, this makes me want to break out my old Roland MT-32. It's now 27 years old, and that thing still straight-up rocks. So far ahead of its time.
