Old games are friggin hard!

trying to beat thillas surfifa righ tnow. at the last boss and can't beat himm...soanyoing

we should just make a sticky of [H]ard Games and challenge ppl to beat em and then explain how :) ... maybe we can finaly figure out how do the same on our emulators!

I could Never EVER beat Battletoads. I've been wanting to beat that game so baddly but I never could. I could get to the pipes area or the snakes and die every time. I never even got to try out the unicycle suckers or see the ending *whine*.

TMNT 1, could not beat it. If I played it now I might have a chance. Ninja Gaiden series.....couldn't beat it.

Spider-man. On easy it only took you as far as the sewers. Once I got all the way to the end and I was just about to defuse the bomb and then it exploded. I thought I had one continue left but nope......I died a little inside that night *choke* deep inside.

ET......ok serisously was there an ending on that game or did you just fall in holes and strech your neck to get out..........FOREVER!?!

Contra, I beat the second one....I think and I think I came close to beating the first one. Actually I think I did beat that.

Super Mario Bro's 2. Ok I saw it beaten infront of me but I never beat it myself. I would of loved to try out the REAL Super Mario Bro's 2 that came out in Japan only. If some of yah didn't know, the original Super Mario Bro's 2 game actually looked a lot like the first one just harder. They thought it was too hard for the Americans so they took a game that was already made in Japan and remade the characters to look like the Mario characters. Thank you G4 Icons for that info.

Metroid, couldn't beat it with out cheats.

Ecco The Dolphin, 3 words. Fuck that game.

ghouls and ghost. Couldn't get pass the first lvl.

Ghouls and Ghost is impossible... I never finished it when I was young but I did get pretty far...

Some of those games are meant to eats your quarters away... That's how the games were made back then...

Ok, how come NOONE remembers a fighting game called YI-AR-KUNG FU. You play as this guy called Oolong and you fight through these people who are named for the weapons they use... (Star, Chain, Pole, Club, Tonfa...etc)

The guy at the VERY end is named BLUES, he has no weapons and he has his shirt off. I swear I could get through every person on 1 quarter, and when I got to him i was owned time and time and time again ( spent about 5 dollars in quarters weekly for about 6 months). I think I got lucky twice and beat him and one time was because time ran out because I lucked up and hit him with a combo and ran from him the entire rest of the time.

No other old school fighting boss or game comes close to this level of difficulty. Fighting this guy went past anger to abstract sorrow and dejection... :(

T&C Surf Design.

Did someone say sonic 2 was hard? That was pie. Every other game in this thread save SMB owns me though.

My former roommate picked up Super Ghouls and Ghosts for the gameboy a few years back and actually beat it. And I mean really beat it. He got to the end and found out that you have to use a super crappy weapon you get at nearly the beginning of the game to get the true ending, then did the whole game over again with said crappy weapon throughout the entire thing. Ridiculous.

A lot of these old games are hard to beat now because we're used to in-game physics that is far more logical to user input.

Wow, brilliant comment.
I've always pondered why these old games seem so hard, and my best guess was that the controls were sloppier then, which isn't entirely true... you said it better.

And I remember "YI-AR-KUNG FU" fun game. I remember going to a party for the fourth of July where they had some arcade machines on free play, including that one... The weapons were very cool in that game. Ah, memories.

I never quite got the hang of "surfing" in that game. :(

How about Gauntlet 2 on NES?

I think it is neverending. I stayed up twice all night with a friend when I was a kid and we thought it would end after 99 levels... but ... no...

why is nobody mentioning Sega games... I wasnt an NES player, I was a Sega Genesis addict... my top list from what I have played, in no particular order of how hard they were...

Sonic & Tails 2 = borderline impossible

Heh, I used to have that game for my Genesis(when it was still alive). I used the level select cheat and could never beat the final boss, so I practiced until I could do a full run-through of the game in one shot(no save) and by the time I got to the last boss I could beat it in like 10 seconds :).

well i beat thirlla surfia. finaly. man that game was hard. i'm such a cheater. i used save on emulators. o well . it would be impossoble other wise..

Now i'm to beat LITTLE NEMO and 8 EYES for nes. Classics.

OMG I almost forgot. ROCKET KNIGHT!!! The one where your a possum in a knights suit and you have a jet pack that you used sometimes to fly around or to get to higher places. I Played that when I had the Genesis and could get sooooo sooooo soooo far but never beat it. I played it again on an emulater and used saves and beat it. I fell ashamed....

Did anybody here ever beat Ultima on NES? I played that game forever and couldn't ever finish it. I handled the Ninja Gaidens, ET on Atari, all three SMBs, and even that POS Friday the 13th, which was ridiculously hard, but Ultima kicked my ass. I never finished Goonies or Legacy of the Wizard either.

Ecco the Dolphin was nothing short of fucked up hard.

most of the Sonic games were difficult, but fun, I'd even play one today if I had an emulator. Tails was more fun through... the bosses were a little rediculous hard, I mean, if you think mega-man bosses could get hard, you havnt played Sonic.

Shinobi III was mostly hard because of not having enough lives to execute what you needed... you basicaly needed to become a master of each level. They just gave you a shitload of knives and surikens and put you up against enemies that see you on the other side of the screen before you see them, so you had to know when and where to fire otherwise shit would just come out of nowhere and you were confused.

OMG I know , everyone i knew myself included could not last more than a minute surfing. The music in that game was cool.

i beat super ghouls and ghosts by using the emulators. i'll try ghouls and ghost next.

ghouls and ghost
kid icrus
battle toads ( very hard to beat)
rocking cats ( also very hard ) had the classic beat what you think is the final boss and have to fight the second final boss...
megaman 1-5 ( overall not that bad but some levels, jeez)

some of the best games i ever played, i cant touch them now. only 2 things to do jump and shoot, yet so impossbile.

Ninja Gaiden. I literally saw my first smashed nintendo controller over that game. I make 50 dollars off that game on a regular basis too. I seriously have bet people so many times they cant beat that game in 4 hours worth of trys and no ones even come close.

Ghouls and goblins/Ghost and Goblins whatever was insanely hard but i did manage to make it to the end of the game, just never finished it out.

I had hell with shadowgate garrrhhhh, but i really enjoyed the game alot, it wasnt so much game mechanics, as figuring out where everything was, and going through trial and error to pull that off.

Ecco the dolphin...............CURSE YOU SEGA

Ninja Gaiden...any of 'em (esp NG2) - ultra hard. It took me hours to beat either recently- and that was with savestates on my DS

Battletoads & Double Dragon was pretty tough, too.

The Clue for the PC/Amiga

You were supposed to plan and commit burgleries, one of my favourite games ever but the last level was just f'ing impossible.

How about Wizards and Warriors and it's sequel, Ironsword? I personally found those game to be guilty of incredible ball-bustery. In my friends circle someone coined the term "cheatin' ass game" so that makes the rounds whenever one of us is playing 8/16 bit games on the modbox.

There were a few other games like that that I had love/hate relationships with.

Blaster Master was an evil game.

That game is very hard. I tried beating it a few times, I have the cartridge, and played it back in the day.

Gah Wizards and Warriors was pretty tough.
Long ass game and no save feature made it that way.
The only time I beat it was using an emulator and save states. :p

ecco was notoriously hard. it was a "souls like" before "souls like" was even thought of ;)

most of these games were designed to be played several times before winning... it wasn't hard if you just tried every day for a couple weeks, you slowly learn the maps and patterns. I personally loved zelda 2 and castlevania 2... never understood the hate for those besides just being different

what makes the games feel very hard nowadays is we are more conditioned to feel bad when we lose. younger kids also just don't mind it, as they are in the learning phase and constantly making mistakes is just part of it. as we get older we tend to seek perfection, steady progress, and conservativism

Nobody in OG thread has been been active for years except Twisted Metal Gear at least he's still alive to play Silver Surfer.

Old games were harder because of hardware constraints. The hardware back then just wasn't capable of bigger games so the only way to add any longevity at all to the game was to make it hard.

Pretty much every old game had something that was difficult your first time playing but you could get good at it. It was good game design that fit within the hardware contrains of the time.

You still see that design in some games, but it's more common for them to just be easy with lots of content. And even the games that are hard nowadays have much more content and substance.
Most people that want to be challenged play competitive online multiplayer games, something that didn't exist back then.

And also, a lot of people nowadays seem to have the notion that if they can't be in the top 10 of all players in the first few hours or be max level, the game isn't good. You see it with people using cheats on single-player and multi-player games, then bragging online about how they beat the game in record time. Or the people that race to do the entire game in a few days then complain about how there's nothing to do in it.

I got to jaquio at the end of ninja gaiden and basically said yeah freak this.

The funny thing about T&C Surf Design was someone back in the 80s said if you get to level 50 there was a huge half pipe at the end. That story stuck in my head all these years. Is there a huge half pipe?

Ecco was hard, ghost n goblins I bought the remake for the xbox one x and it's still hard. Fun though!
