Official NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Announcement @ [H]

Because the 8GB version has zero difference in performance, and it makes sense to buy the 4GB. Nobody cares about the missing 2GB on the 1060 cause it'll make zero difference as well. None of these cards can effectively make good use of 8GB of vram.
unfortunately there is a difference, RAM speed. 4GB cards use 7Gbps and the 8GB uses 8Gbps chips. gamers nexus did a comparison video and the benefit of the 8Gbps shows.

edit: now back on topic...

I feel rather irrational about it, but I'm seriously tempted to sell off my 970's in my HTPC and just get a 1060. For what I can realistically sell two 970's for here locally I could probably straight purchase the 1060.

Would it be worth the raw performance drop to ditch SLI and gain 2.5GB of video memory? The TV is an older plasma (1080p) so I'm not sure how soon the "3.5GB" 970's are going to be inadequate.

I'm not concerned about saving electricity, but lower case temps would also be nice. I feel like I have the upgrade itch and just want to scratch it!

Only if you were upgrading to a 1070, not a 1060. We really don't have all the performance numbers besides a canned bench and that's not enough to go by. For all we know this thing can choke above 1080p.

Ignoring the rest of your post, this is just complete nonsense. Just like 3rd parties on Amazon charging $900 for a 1080 FE, this is a third party. This is not price gouging by a reputable reseller
A third party affiliated with NewEgg. Doesn't this make you mad? I expect that stuff from Ebay, but NewEgg?

Was gonna bite on the RX 480 then PCIE issue came up in between I picked up a R9 390 "good deal" and so far decent but not happy. So if this 1060 beats the 480 and is actually at MSRP then I may have found a card for my secondary PC

No, keep the 970's. You'll get like 10% performance, at best. The extra vram won't do you any good. And you lose SLI which is potential performance. Also, no SLI for the 1060.

Only in a couple games. There wasn't a noticeable difference in most of the games they tested. Most of the difference was between .3 and 3FPS. A, as they called it, measurable but not noticeable difference. If someone is using a 1080/60 monitor and really wants to save the money they will be perfectly fine with the 4GB card. If you can afford it there really is no reason not to get 8GB model, but it's not that much a difference in most games. Of course if someone wanted to risk it they could just buy a 4GB card and try unlocking the locked off RAM.

Poor AMD. They seemed to have a winner on their hands with the Radeon RX 480 if they could get the power issues sorted out and finally get AIB cards out onto the market. And nVidia immediately comes along and steals their thunder with a significantly more powerful mid-range card that only costs a little more and will have pimped out AIB cards available on launch day, which is only a week and a half away. At the rate things are going with the RX 480, there will probably be AIB 1060's on the market long before AIB RX 480's and in that case it's basically game over for the RX 480.

AMD just can't catch a break. Add the RX 480 to a list of overhyped fuckups overshadowed by better products from Intel and nVidia. The power issues, lack of AIB cards, and imminent launch of the 1060 have rendered the 480 irrelevant.

This.
I called the 480 a failure back on June 2nd. From ATI to AMD back to ATI? A Journey in Futility @ [H] It's obvious because AMD has absolutely nothing that Nvidia doesn't. From that post-
NV pros- heat, power, noise, efficiency/optimization, brand recognition, driver advantage
AMD pros- undercutting/cost (which is a choice, not an advantage)

Only the diehard AMD fans truly believed Polaris would take the perf/watt crown. No one else did though. This is their big advance too. Polaris was supposed to be the big update to GCN if you believed all the rumor mongering, the "moment of reckoning" for Nvidia... Polaris and Vega. I've been saying that Nvidia isn't sitting around doing nothing post-Maxwell.
Nvidia doesn't seem to like the $100 and less price point, so I don't expect them to release anything under $200 anytime soon. But I won't be surprised if they end up with a $200 1050, $250 1060, $380 1070, $600 1080. Probably see the 1050 eventually span the $100-$200 range as time goes on and depending on RAM configuration, a 6pin overclocker vs PCIE power only cheapo etc.

Vega is going to be absolutely obliterated by the 1080Ti and maybe even the 1080 at perf/watt. The 1070 has TitanX performance at 150watts and the 480 has 970 performance at 150watts+, that says it all. This whole charade is now over. Though I felt AMD's back was broken once and for all once Fiji failed, that was a great chip but was still crushed.

It's time to give up the rumor mongering and hope for AMD. Market will be healthier with them gone, someone will acquire their IP/place and compete competently. Hope for AMD to die quickly instead of another 16 years of wasted time. A swift death for RTG/AMD please.

SLI/CFX with DX 12 is meaningless.

EMA is the new multi-gpu standard which I am sure two 1060 GTX will work - cough cough or 1 480 and 1 1060 as well or a 1060 and even a R9 Fury X.

The only DX game that supports that I know of is AoTs - while only one data point I hope HardOCP at least tries this with, hey why not - one 480 with one 1060 (if it works). In essence you will not be limited on adding cards for EMA games on DX 12 in the future. My question would be would not having the SLI bridge hurt? - It didn't with a FuryX and a 980Ti (in fact that combo was faster if I remember right then either two FuryX or two 980Ti's ).

For past DX 11 games (few newly released DX 11 games support CFX/SLI) yes the 480 maybe has an advantage over the 1060 plus does gives some options for picking up a second card later on at a great price (Ebay, friend, awesome Black Friday sell etc.).

It is a rather big difference between $239 and $300 at this price range but $239 and $249 is doable except on the shelf the person is going to see: 8gb vs. 6gb - that alone unfortunately or not will make a big difference. Plus if AMD cards do better in DX 12 stuff with some bar graphs showing the two would give an advantage. Even more important is what cards are actually on the shelf to be bought or online - Who ever can make them fast enough and keep them in stock will probably really be the big winners. Nvidia will have to deliver and I am not sure they will be able to. With Microsoft new policy of Xbox one games immediately on Windows Store (possibly Steam too) DX 12 mostly - can only help the 480 moving forward.

As it is now the 480 stock already beats the 980 in DX 12 games (Warhammer, AoTs, Quantum Leap . . .) - need to see how the 1060 handles DX 12 stuff.

For upcoming review and the number of reads for HardOCP, I am sure the match up of the 480 vs. the 1060 will get more reads then probably any previous review. Just because the majority of folks are really <$300 buyers, HardOCP also is a hell a lot easier to read through, format wise without being excessively nagged with pop ups, click bate traps, delays loading endless video streams etc. Some rather smart folks here helps with impressive forums with frequent and enlightening interactions with the staff of HardOCP.

Is this what is called thread crapping?

No. I see you're new on the forum or were banned previously as an old-troll if you are so offended at AMD negativity, but you could possibly be new. Pretty information dense from what I can see.
Listed GF price points and speculation on the 1050. Included how the 480 stacks up to the 1070 in perf per watt. Talked about NV advantages vs AMD's architecture advantages. With my speculation on a few other matters like Vega and the best-path-forward for AMD. That's a AAA post compared to the average.
I'm guessing it's the last little bits and bobs that bothered you so much to post that. Hurt feelings. :D Yours is much, MUCH closer to a threadcrap.

I think you are completely wrong here. AMD cards consistently gain perf when comparing DX12 vs DX11 perf in all games which support DX12. In the price segment that Rx 480 launched AMD wins the majority of the DX12 games currently released by a significant margin. Its a thrashing to current Nvidia cards like GTX 980 / GTX 970. It remains to be seen how the GTX 1060 will fare in DX12 games. Of the DX12 games released , AMD Gaming Evolved titles like Ashes and Hitman are clearly running faster on DX12 with AMD cards. Nvidia cards seem to perform slightly slower with DX12. RoTR which is a Gameworks title shows performance regression for Nvidia cards when comparing DX11 vs DX12 again while AMD cards gain slightly.

Right now DX12 performance is an embarassment for Nvidia Maxwell cards especially the GTX 980 and GTX 970. For AMD cards its their key advantage. If GTX 1060 does not fix that its going to get ugly pretty soon with upcoming major AAA titles like Deux Ex Mankind Divided, Battlefield 1, Watch Dogs 2, Star Citizen all being DX12 based.

All that tells me is AMD has weak DX 11 drivers.

I'm here to read about and discuss the just announced GTX 1060. The very same card I'm also certainly going to buy pending reviews. What me, and I assume most others are not here for is pointless AMD rants ad nauseam. Save that for the RX 480 threads please.

So only the AMD threads gets rants ad nauseam but Nvidia ones are to be kept pure and enlightened? :p

Ahmmm the 1060 will be facing the 480 if price competitively so comparing the two is very much logical at this point.

What usually wins out over perf/w is perf/$ and overall options for the individual.

As for the 1060, except for the size (why or why did Nvidia make it this F - - -ing big!) Anyways looks like a good SFF case card and I am sure some smaller versions from AIB will be out.

1060 120w vs. the 480 165w card (AMD lied about power usage as far as I am concerned, it is not a 150w card but a 165w card). OEMs may just prefer the 1060 except that stupid 8gb vs 6gb you can high light with the 480. Now who can deliver the hardware will probably be the winner for OEMs this round.

How about we keep the AMD rants in the AMD section and the NVIDIA rants in the NVIDIA section. Or is that too hard for people to wrap their heads around?!

Edit: Or maybe people should just stfu already...
How about eliminating rants period with logical arguments, tests etc.

Comparing the competition, finding advantages and weaknesses is why most of us come here. To figure out which one is better for one's use. Then again having a little bit of fun is also good.

The 1060 needs to be tested out, reviewed accurately with as much data as possible.

You look at 1080/1070 supplies. Still hard to find and still no reference cards two months in, . Yes I bought a founders edition because I had the funds. But guess that doesn't mean I think this dual msrp isn't bullshit. If AMD competes with Vega I would expect nvidia to put he wraps on this bullshit double MSRP technique.

You can bet your ass that for the first 2 months you don't see any reference cards. This is a way of making extra money and there is no incentive for them to release the regular MSRP card right away if its the same performance. Like I said Nvidia is milking everyone just because they can. Good luck finding the card for MSRP for a while. AIB's will refuse to make the MSRP cards and price their cards little under founders edition. No one will compete with standard msrp anymore since founders edition launch.

Well that ends my rant, but MSRP is no longer MSRP, MSRP now is founders edition, lol! The lower MSRP is just to save face thats all.

No doubt 1060 will be a great card. But right now 980 is the same price as founders edition 1060. Actually newegg has one for 285 after rebate. But As the new traditon founders edition will the only one that will be readily available. It seems its the new thing now and it might change if amd decides to compete again. But for now it will be like no MSRP cards with a two month exclusive of founders edition.

This.

You do know the RX 480 is sold out right? Also, how is it a failure when it's $50 cheaper than the 1060?

Only the diehard AMD fans truly believed Polaris would take the perf/watt crown.
You're giving Nvidia a lot of credit when the 1060 hasn't been reviewed. Also Founder Edition is evil, and Nvidia's new cards are in horrible short supply. Which asks the question if the 16nm process for Nvidia has low yields?

If AMD did go away, the market wouldn't be healthier. The RX 480 is amazingly good considering its price, and there's no need to spread FUD over AMD. Unless you want Nvidia to be a monopoly for no good reason? At this rate, get used to Founders Your Wallet Edition.

Founder editions will be only available at Nvidia.com the rest of the market then will be filled by AIB.. so the only cards available at retailers and etailers are going to AIB editions.

Bought a 1070 but instead changed it out for 1080 at bestbuy. Bought founders edition for both. Why cuz simply put I was building a system now and I wanted to call it a day. Nothing else was available. Even though I hate every single thing about founder edition model and not seeing anything available at msrp. It just simply sucks. But it is nvidia doing this because they can and they will continue to do so. So I really hope enough people buy the rx 480 so I don't have to spend 1000 dollars next go around to upgrade my gtx 1080 which I probably wont. But there are who will.

RX480 is great product. When it comes to price people don't care about power usage and shit and still a big leap compared to AMD last gen. That is why RX 480 will sell. Nvidia will sell enough 1060s but I am sure RX480 will sell more just because of the price. Due to founder edition good luck seeing the standard MSRP card for a 2 months or so.

Is that for all founders editions? I mean I see founders edition selling at best buy for 1070 and 1080 and every site has founder edition models. Thats pretty much reference card now which I actually believe to the real MSRP not one thats not available for months after release if ever.

As the article stated 1060fe cards will only be on NVIDIA.com. Most likely they will let retailers finish selling in stock 1070/80s then they will prob only be on nv.com too.

hmmm interesting. So this is like carrier exclusive for cell phones lol. I bet we find the founders edition readily available all the time. Must be nice for Nvidia $$$$$$$$$

I must agree though them founder edition coolers are damn sick, looks like a pure quality in your hand. At least on the 1070 and 1080 but it would have been nicer to see a 50 dollar premium on the higher end cards not 70 and 100...

Yup cause people will buy em just to swing the bigger e-peen and cause "they can't wait"...

Yup cause people will buy em just to swing the bigger e-peen and cause "they can't wait"...

I think people can wait a few weeks and month and after month and half though you get squeezed in. I simply said fuck it at the end cuz I was tired of waiting and looking every fucking day not seeing any in stock. Best buy gets Nvidia Branded ones in stock all the time so I bought one there.

I think most buyers are just squeezed in to buying these. Seems like Nvidia is reserving a lot of inventory for their own branded models because best buy gets them every week it seems and nvidia site is always selling them.

Yup cause people will buy em just to swing the bigger e-peen and cause "they can't wait"...

Yup, but oh well. Gotta give Nvidia credit for finding a new to get more money out of people. It's actually rather ingenious. And Nvidia being the only one making the FE cards for 1060 is pretty smart as well. Means AIBs can't cut into their profits. Most prebuilt systems with the 1060 will probably be using the stock card, which means they'll have to buy product directly from Nvidia. Meaning Nvidia gets 100% of the revenue from all stock sales. They probably should have done that for the 1070 and 1080 as well. Would have saved them from the, well deserved, criticism they've gotten about the dual MSRPs for those cards and meant people would have to flock to their site to get the FE coolers.

That's a very big call to say the 480 will outsell the 1060. Unfortunately neither card has the performance that i need. It will be highly entertaining watching this play out.

If they work with Nvidia, they get Rise of the Tomb Raider.
8GB vs. 6GB is largely discussion about textures. As long as you have enough VRAM, you can typically improve texture quality with minimum performance impact. RoTR specifically cannot run well with less than 6GB with the highest texture setting. This applies to 1080p as well.

In order to have nVidia look bad, all AMD needs to do in their next Gaming Evolved hit title is to have some "Ultra" textures option, that just will not fit in 6GB memory. They also should think about using FP32 in a meaningful way, as there AMD has 2x performance over nVidia.

But really, their biggest win would be if they achieve significant adoption of GPUOpen and DX12/Vulcan.

I would love to see 1060 vs. 480 in custom AIB face-off, like Asus Strix 1060 vs. 480, MSI Gaming, Gigabyte or whoever gives both vendors equal chance.

Maxwell helped NV outsold AMD in volume by ~4:1, especially amusing when total crap like 960 was pitted against firesale Hawaiis. Anyone here really believe the 1060 won't massively outsell the 480?

That $250 GPU alone is basically the price of a whole Xbox One. Many people can't or don't want to afford a $800+ gaming PC and there's no way that's going to change significantly because the performance goes up by a handful of FPS (or even many handfuls). Come now.

EH im sure for $250 you can make a pc that runs at 30hz 1080p with medium settings.

Looks like no SLI, and i can see their reason, but that gives rx480 more for the money imo.

We'll see. I think the 480 is an okay product for the price but not necessarily great. We still have yet to see what its competitor, the 1060, brings to the table. Maybe you're right that the 480 will sell better just because of price, but if the 1060 can deliver around the same performance or a bit better and do it while using less power, that's not an insignificant thing. For those that have considerations for heat and noise, like an HTPC or SSF case, the 1060 may prove to be a better deal to them.

I'm not ragging on the 480 but if the 1060 comes across as being competitive performance wise and does it using less power, that's a win for nVidia and AMD is yet again in the position of having to sell cheap because it simply doesn't have the goods to anything else.

It's not a paper launch. It's a product announcement.

No one here seems to understand the difference. A paper launch is when the product is actually available for purchase but in such short supply, or no supply, that you effectively can't buy it.

Other than not having any reviews, this IS a paper launch.

Not that big of a deal for me as its only a few days for availability. Its not like Radeon480 that took a month after announcement

I remember the good old days when there were no soft lauch, hard launch or paper launch. Heck I miss the days when cards were available at retail days before the announcement.

As for the RX480 outselling the GTX 1060, well if history is a lesson the GTX960 was clearly beaten by the R9 380 while being more expensive. Guess which card sold more?

And even if the RX480 takes a bite from the pie, nvidia can still release a 1050 and go head to head at the $200 mark

Better a paper launch for Nvidia to stop extra sales going to amd than not announcing and potentially losing those sales. Paper launches are the norm now. Even Apple does it. People are too impatient, they want to know whats coming out so a company lets you know and then people want it instantly available.
