Official LG Curved Ultrawide 34UC97 thread

If that is to me, which I am assuming it is since I was the only one that responded, then I am guessing that you took what I said completely wrong.

-Came here asking the people that have it or the um95, if they could definitely tell a difference.
-I went to fry's couldn't tell much of a difference (but hadn't said anything about it)
-You responded that you could and that we should see it at Fry's.
-I responded telling you that I have but that I , personally, didn't notice a difference. And then I stated that I was assuming that I hadn't sat there long enough/used it enough. And was hoping for a response about the time it took for you to notice a difference or if it was right away. If it was right away, then I know that maybe I personally don't have the problems with the flat version vs the curved version. If it wasn't immediate, then maybe I need to keep doing research before buying the flat version because I might regret the purchase after some usage instead of getting the curved.

This forum is strange! It’s designed for potential buyers convincing each other not to buy the product. Instead of potential buyers asking owners what they think about the product. Ha-ha-ha very funny. I guess that’s why I’m a n00bie. I’m signing off here.

I'm a noobie too.this is an open forum for all kinds of opinions and facts. I dont think it's designed for what you are stating... not at all.

Ah I'm fairly close to the screen and I do play some FPS games for a bit at night. I'm wondering if the curved screen is good for productivity. I work with some video editing and minor coding.

right. I'm sure that the curve helps to SOME degree, but that's subjective. I actually have not personally seen the curved model, but from my experience with the flat, I think the curve, for "me" would be negligible. but curves ARE cool. i would love to have a 100" curved 4k tv :)

I took a look at one. Not worth it. Especially not worth the extra 300 dollars. There's one thing though. The one I tested has no backlight bleed. Or it was so slight that it's not noticeable. Is that worth the 300 dollars?

The curve is so slight that it doesn't even matter. Honestly, using it for games or productivity. It's not worth the money. It personally think the curve would only be good for a bigger screen like a TV.

One small note for people that buy this monitor, the bottom of the monitor gets quite warm. I didn't notice this on the 34UM95.

Oh so if anyone wants to know. The sleep issues with the monitor are gone. The cycling issue on the 34UM95 does not exist on the 34UC97.

The curve is so slight that it doesn't even matter.

and yet if he had to choose between curve and no-curve, surely he'd choose curve

people invested in 34UM95 are not the most trustworthy crowd when it comes to 34UC97 reviews. slight conflict of interest there wouldn't you say

I'm pretty fair with the reviews on this. The 34UC97 is nice and it fixes some of the issues on the 34UM95 for 300 dollars. If money is no object, then pick the curve.

You guys keep saying a $300 difference...and at normal prices, that is true.

But I'd just like to remind everyone that the 34UM94 has been available once already on Massdrop for $849, and that is very likely to happen again, making it a difference of $450...in which case, I don't think the curve is justifiable at all.

I have the flat version. I do think the curve looks cool, but I'm with others here...if I'm paying $1,300 then I want a large 4K IPS or VA display. No way can I justify a premium of $450 for a slight curve that some people say is barely noticeable. YMMV.

Good deal. yeah $450 is a lot of money, that right there is almost a brand new GTX-980 VideoCard.

There is new kid on the block appearing soon: Philips 40" 4K monitor which is (unfortunately ) flat. But it looks great and despite professional look its price is extremely attractive, 600-700€ vs. 1000+ for the curved LG. I am considering buying it next month when it comes but there is concern if it is not too wide without being curved, this may result in pixel artefacts showing up (color shift and reduced brightness) since viewing angle near edges will be quite high.

Not 21:9 though. That said, seems nice. 32" is too small to properly take advantage of 4K, 40" is a much better size.

My next logical upgrade from the UM95 will be a 4K 21:9 display ( 5120x2160), whenever that arrives at an affordable price point. Samsung has a 110" TV at that res but it costs over $100K :p

Is that really the price? If so that is a steal if it's a 60h unit. Hmmm. Maybe I'll test one of those out at work.

Very interesting. The spec sheet claims 60Hz, which is perfect.

The PPI on a 40" 4K display is roughly the same as the 34UM95 and the 27" 2560x1440 displays.

However, the 40" is 3.5" wider and 6.5" taller than the 34UM95.

If the price is reasonable, I'm quite interested.

Mind that (according to NCX and Prad) "it has twice as much input lag as the non-curved version". :(

Actually, it has 3x as much lag as the UM3495 which has a 9.2ms signal delay when using the best (overshoot free) Medium overdrive setting, according to PRAD. The 34UC97 does have faster pixel response times when using its best overdrive setting (Medium).

i was debating getting it from newegg when it was in stock recently, but than i thought BF is about a month away!!!!...any thoughts on if retailers will offer discount on the 97 for BF?

Probably not. Considering it just released recently and expensive monitors typically don't go on sale for BF.

Agreed. The hot items are typically never on sale. If you're lucky you might get a few points.

I'd love a great Black Friday deal on this, but I really doubt it will happen.

I get the impression that these panels are still in limited supply. As long as the supply is limited and demand remains high, we're going to be seeing high prices.

I'm still hoping that Dell will release their version soon.

Yup, these curved panels are in limited supply. I only saw one curved panel at the store.

Might be possible on the flat ones. The curved UC97 is still extremely scarce, and the UM95 seems readily in-stock, but it seems there is now an absolute shitload of UM94 displays in the US right now. Several shops are showing high inventories at their warehouses.. many list under 100 available, but a few others have over 200 in-stock. Think I've checked prices at nearly 50 different US shops that are now listing it (even saw one listed for under $900).

The Dell should be out in Asia in a few more days (and hopefully in the US the following month). Seems like they had a few on display earlier this week..

4K TV is not the same as 4K monitor. One could think about buying a 40" 4K TV and using it as monitor but e.g. input lag is bigger.

Regarding the 4K 21:9 display, the question here is what would be the size of such display? Think for a moment that height of such display is similar to the height of 40" 16:9 monitor. Than its width would be huge, too huge for flat monitor. It could be extremely nice for curved monitor but this is another story. I consider the 40" 16:9 monitor as maximum for desktop category. Such monitor has to be lowered to touch
the desk in order not be much higher than the eye level. On can obviously make a 21:9 monitor with the same width as the 40" 16:9 but it will be just narrower.

Is that really the price? If so that is a steal if it's a 60h unit. Hmmm. Maybe I'll test one of those out at work.

Exactly, the major gain of 40" in size is in the height, this means the display can/should be lowered to the level of the desk and than it fills ideally the whole visual field. In the width, it just adds 1.75" from each side to the 34" field. Obviously, bending would make the 40" absolutely phenomenal but even a flat one should be great.

The price is a steal (assuming no major problem with picture quality). With introductory prices quoted in the range of 700-800€ in EUrope it should be in similar $ price range in the US.

I picked mine up on Saturday... Main store for Microcenter showed 2 instock, I reserved mine immediatly for $1299.

Its replacing 3 x 24 screen that were in portrait mode...3240x1920...now I am 3440x1440

And I must say, I absolutely love it.... I was worried about the loss of vertical viewing comparaed to what I had.... and it dont bother me at especially since I got no divisions going on..

Plus, I am getting much higher frame rates!...

at first, i thought u had crazy bezel's goin on your monitors, than i realised part of what i thought those crazy bezels are is actually the cockpit of whatever game your playing hahah

Is the dell equivalent going on sale tomorrow? Verge and Engadget have a bunch of stories about their new laptop and desktop going on sale tomorrow... and the monitor is pictured in press pics:

http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/27/...alienwares-radical-take-on-the-gaming-desktop

I think it's coming very soon. Just today, the U3415W was listed as an accessory for their Alienware 13 laptop (which goes on sale today, Oct. 28 in the US ;))..

man, this sucks! i got a 20% off code for dell monitors and was hoping i could apply it or prepurchase it for the Dell UltraSharp U3415W but the cs at dell says there's no item # for it

Hah.. I was thinking of the exact same scenario with their coupons!

All models of their AW13 are available to order, but not shipping until December 10th, so I'm guessing that will be around the time the U3415W will be available (matches up with their Nov release in Asia, and Dec worldwide info).

Bummer.

My enterprise Dell rep doesn't have pricing or release date info either. I really want to know if it's going to be cheaper than the LG, with the same specs (sans Thunderbolt).

I received mine yesterday and the backlight bleed is bad. It's not IPS glow either. On colored screens it looks great but as soon as you start a movie or a game where there is plenty of blacks then it is very noticeable. Mine is on the right upper and lower corners and extend out about 3 - 4 inches. I'll be returning it and waiting for Dell's version of it. I have had a lot of Dell Ultrasharp monitors and never had backlight bleed on any of them. I should have listened to all the complaints of bleeding around the web so it's my own fault for ordering it.

You got the curved version? I think most of the complaints about BLB were about the flat version, but it's very possible that it's affecting curved units as well.

I'm interested in the Dell and, particularly, the Samsung version with the VA panel. I'm very pleased with my LG in terms of the quality of this particular unit but I do wish the blacks and contrast were as good as my BenQ VA monitor. I might just wait and upgrade to a 4K though; we'll see.

Yes mine is the curved version 34UC97. Newegg has them in stock. But buyer beware. My RMA just got approved so I am going to pack it up when I get home.

I just talked to LG for the heck of it to see if they realize what is going on with these monitors and if they will have any without the issue. They told me it's not considered a defect and won't do anything about it. Good thing Newegg considers it a defect lol.

Hmm, makes me wonder what will happen to the monitors that are returned for the same reason that you're citing. I always thought that a place like Newegg would just accept the returns as a convenience to the customer and then return them to the manufacturer...but if LG is saying that the bleed isn't a defect, is Newegg stuck with them only to re-sell them as open box items? Or maybe Newegg has more pull with the manufacturer and has more leverage as far as returning items that the normal consumer can't.

Just picked one of these up.. Anyone have any idea who I need to contact to get the VESA adapter that people have been saying LG is providing for free?

My knowledge of how this works is that a store such as Newegg would ship a container of defective brand products back to that brand after Newegg checks. Once received that brand such as LG would also check for defects, and LG could definitely say that these items are defective here and not refund Newegg that money. Newegg could then pull that item from the store, etc. This kind of push shove would cost both companies, so they typically don't do it.

Some stores like Walmart have so much pull that selling a product at Walmart is both a blessing and a curse. Walmart would ship you a container of defective products and include some products that's not even made by your company and still ask for refunds. When you tell Walmart that, Walmart would threaten to not do additional business with you. So you'd better just bend over and take it.

One of my first job is making a supply-chain inventory management system. And those are some of the things I had to learn to make it.

So I went to frys and really compared. Definitely looked like the curve was better. I would get it if it wasn't a $400 difference. If money wasnt an object, I would get the curved.
