There won't be an open beta. The pre-orders being added to the beta will be about as open as it gets.
source?
Open beta isn't really needed. Its not like the release lacks anticipation. That shaves off another few weeks from the launch date if they really want to.
what? Open Beta's aren't meant to build publicity as a primary reason... that's more of a side effect. The reason for an open beta is more related to stress testing the servers in many cases... I think it would be ridiculous to not have an open beta regardless of the "fan base size"
Also, that youtube/gamespot interview of Daniel Erickson claiming there won't be an open beta is a pretty loose statement. He doesn't come out and say no there won't be one - he even mentions "if there's a closed beta it'll be real close to release date." If that were true then release is this month, lol.
My take, that guy doesn't know shit and just writes for the game, hence his title of lead writer.
I would think that an Open Beta would be necessary to help work out a lot of the bugs that they would end up having at release. I have seen games killed by their open Betas though, so maybe it would work to not have one. I guess it comes down to how many bugs are in game and how well the guys over at BioWare can debug things under super stressful conditions. IF they can launch without any major incidents without an open beta, then they are the first company I've seen do so and more power to them.
That being said, I think it is highly unlikely that they will not have an Open Beta. Stress testing your servers and working out the frustrating bugs that seem to pop up when you have populated servers is pretty important to a successful launch.
an open beta isnt needed, they got more than enough beta applications to cover and stress testing they want to do. all they have to do is send out keys to how ever many of the 1.5million people that signed up for it as they want to stress it as hard as they want.
I doubt there has been an mmo with those numbers wanting to beta test and sign up. negating the need to do a full open beta.
if they only got 50k apps and wanted to stress test 100k people then they would be forced to do an open beta but thats just not the case here.

Ya ea/bw just let him do all the interviews and talk out his ass with inaccurate info. Makes sense to me.
collectors edition ordered.
Preordered the standard edition. Now all we need is a release date already.
FYI:

"Beta test weekends to begin in September", so the game sounds like it's not coming out until at least October. Just a nice tidbit I stumbled across on the official forums (thread: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=383679 ).
(Cross-posted from another thread I put it in)
Based off the conference call recently where it was stated "We are officially moving the expected ship date of SWTOR from September to November" I'd say it's a safe bet that it will be released in November.
I pre ordered the Digital Deluxe edition from origin. I couldn't justify that fucking retarded $150.00 price tag for the CE. They can kiss my ass. $80.00 was too much already in my opinion for that DD version but I bit.
Why would you pay 80.00 for the digital version!? Is their extra in game items? If so, then how is that different from a Korean cash shop type MMO?
collectors is sold out already at origin
Has been since 9 am dude. LOL it's funny as hell to me actually.
I'm not sure if its funny or if its scary...
Both actually. I find it hysterical that in an economy such as ours people will run and blow 150.00 on a game with extra crap. I had a hard time justifying the extra 20 bucks. Not because I can't afford but because I'm a fairly practical guy and I hate wasting money on bullshit but because this is star wars I got suckered.
Edit: I bought the digital deluxe edition from origin.
I can understand that, I would probably get suckered into doing something similar if they had a more expensive edition of Skyrim. I wouldn't be able to justify an extra 90$ though
LOL I'm not buying any CE or special edition of Skyrim. Althought I did buy the CE of Oblivion lol. I stopped buying CE's and shit around that time though. Waste of money.
Does anyone else find it strange they are trying to get people to pre-order the game before their is even a wide spread beta? an Open beta? Or any large amount of people that have actually gotten any hands on time with this game? I feel they are trying to pull a quick one get people to buy a game before most people even play it to sell more copies. It appears to me as if they were hiding something and want to sell out before people realize the game is crap and they cant sell copies.
Most MMO's dont go up for pre-order until a large scale beta or open beta.... = /
not to mention you are pre-ordering a game with no official release date?
I kind of like the early play idea. Instead of everyone jumping in all at once as soon as the game is live this will stagger that influx of people. Hopefully that will let them deal with any issues that come up better. Might be wishful thinking on my part but it doesn't bug me. And if someone is willing to pay that much to get in a few days quicker it would be foolish of the company to not take their money.
