Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

*** Takes out the magic crystal ball*** they will announce the release date and pre-order details tomorrow 7/21. :)

I would guess at a late October launch, like the 25th. That gives time for a 6-week final phase of closed beta, a 1-week open beta, and a preorder launch weekend, with multi-week downtime between each phase for wipes and prepping the final launch hardware. Or they could move the date sooner if they drop the open beta or release with less testing.

There won't be an open beta. The pre-orders being added to the beta will be about as open as it gets.

Open beta isn't really needed. Its not like the release lacks anticipation. That shaves off another few weeks from the launch date if they really want to.

what? Open Beta's aren't meant to build publicity as a primary reason... that's more of a side effect. The reason for an open beta is more related to stress testing the servers in many cases... I think it would be ridiculous to not have an open beta regardless of the "fan base size"

Also, that youtube/gamespot interview of Daniel Erickson claiming there won't be an open beta is a pretty loose statement. He doesn't come out and say no there won't be one - he even mentions "if there's a closed beta it'll be real close to release date." If that were true then release is this month, lol.

My take, that guy doesn't know shit and just writes for the game, hence his title of lead writer.

I would think that an Open Beta would be necessary to help work out a lot of the bugs that they would end up having at release. I have seen games killed by their open Betas though, so maybe it would work to not have one. I guess it comes down to how many bugs are in game and how well the guys over at BioWare can debug things under super stressful conditions. IF they can launch without any major incidents without an open beta, then they are the first company I've seen do so and more power to them.

That being said, I think it is highly unlikely that they will not have an Open Beta. Stress testing your servers and working out the frustrating bugs that seem to pop up when you have populated servers is pretty important to a successful launch.

an open beta isnt needed, they got more than enough beta applications to cover and stress testing they want to do. all they have to do is send out keys to how ever many of the 1.5million people that signed up for it as they want to stress it as hard as they want.

i doubt there has been an mmo with those numbers wanting to beta test and sign up. negating the need to do a full open beta.

if they only got 50k apps and wanted to stress test 100k people then they would be forced to do an open beta but thats just not the case here.

then what you're saying is that it's in effect an open beta for those that applied to the closed beta, which as far as most games go I would bet that close to 90% of the people playing in an open beta had previously applied to the closed beta(s) and weren't accepted or continued playing from closed beta to the open

so the only question that remains is how many people would they need to stress test servers (note plurality as this game will have a huge launch issues with the # of initial players). If that number is less than the 1.5 million closed beta applications then yeah I guess you could say they're skipping open beta... if they need more than that since you have to assume a % less will actually sign up after invited and then an even smaller % will be on at the same time... well you get the picture.

If they don't hold one, they're just trying to bank on the initial sales of SW fans that try out the game to keep the game profitable as they'll be forced to buy it to try it and probably not subscribe for long anyway (there's always that die off after release). Whereas they could do so for free via open beta.

The other option I see is to make the open beta part of the pre-order bonus... would be smart I think.

Ya ea/bw just let him do all the interviews and talk out his ass with inaccurate info. Makes sense to me.

did you watch that youtube impromptu interview he gave for gamespot? and that 10 seconds of answer where he was unsure of what to say... it wasn't clear at all - hardly something to base facts on.

I pre ordered the Digital Deluxe edition from origin. I couldn't justify that fucking retarded $150.00 price tag for the CE. They can kiss my ass. $80.00 was too much already in my opinion for that DD version but I bit.

FYI:

"Beta test weekends to begin in September", so the game sounds like it's not coming out until at least October. Just a nice tidbit I stumbled across on the official forums (thread: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=383679 ).

(Cross-posted from another thread I put it in)

Based off the conference call recently where it was stated "We are officially moving the expected ship date of SWTOR from September to November" I'd say it's a safe bet that it will be released in November.

Ya I read that this morning and I would agree, sadly. Ehh it is what it is.

Why would you pay 80.00 for the digital version!? Is their extra in game items? If so, then how is that different from a Korean cash shop type MMO?

In game virtual items and a somewhat early headstart. Plus I've been waiting for this game for 5 years and I'm a star wars fan and they see us coming from a mile away and they know they can get away with it. Yes it's probably a waste of 20 extra dollars and yes I'm a lil annoyed at myself for doing it but that's life. Now spending $150 on that fucking retarded CE...uhhhh no. They can seriously kiss my ass on that one. I may be a lil silly when it comes to star wars and star trek shit but I'm not full blown nuts.

I'm not sure if its funny or if its scary...

Both actually. I find it hysterical that in an economy such as ours people will run and blow 150.00 on a game with extra crap. I had a hard time justifying the extra 20 bucks. Not because I can't afford but because I'm a fairly practical guy and I hate wasting money on bullshit but because this is star wars I got suckered.

Edit: I bought the digital deluxe edition from origin.

I can understand that, I would probably get suckered into doing something similar if they had a more expensive edition of Skyrim. I wouldn't be able to justify an extra 90$ though

LOL I'm not buying any CE or special edition of Skyrim. Althought I did buy the CE of Oblivion lol. I stopped buying CE's and shit around that time though. Waste of money.

I'm a sucker for the elder scrolls series... I played through arena daggerfall morrowind and oblivion who knows how many times. :p

Does anyone else find it strange they are trying to get people to pre-order the game before their is even a wide spread beta? an Open beta? Or any large amount of people that have actually gotten any hands on time with this game? I feel they are trying to pull a quick one get people to buy a game before most people even play it to sell more copies. It appears to me as if they were hiding something and want to sell out before people realize the game is crap and they cant sell copies.

Most MMO's dont go up for pre-order until a large scale beta or open beta.... = /

not to mention you are pre-ordering a game with no official release date?

I will agree their tactics and their pricing are very ballsy and arrogant in fact. No doubt about it. That said, BW puts out quality products and always have. A ton of people have talked about their beta experiences so far and mostly all positive. There has been some criticism's over this or that but again overwhelmigly positive.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are trying to cash in early because they have a crap product on their hands but I would say they are trying to get as much money and guage interest up front. No doubt about that. They are also taking FULL advantage of the IP they have in their lap here. They know full well their customer base of SW fans and they know they can get away with the NON traditional MMO launch/beta/pre order/pricing/release date info. I'm not saying I agree with it but these are the facts. I would however not just take all this as a fast cash and grab ala STO or any other piece of shit MMO just because of how they are handling this. They are simply cashing in hard and early on this IP and the anticipation of this title.

They have a good product on their hands but I do not like how they have handled this whole pre order business. The pricing and the whole register your key early and you get more headstart time is complete bullshit as far as I'm concerned. I think they are being scum bags honestly but so be it. Their game, their money and their call. Noone is forcing us to buy it. So there you have my take.

I kind of like the early play idea. Instead of everyone jumping in all at once as soon as the game is live this will stagger that influx of people. Hopefully that will let them deal with any issues that come up better. Might be wishful thinking on my part but it doesn't bug me. And if someone is willing to pay that much to get in a few days quicker it would be foolish of the company to not take their money.

Ya but then again do you feel it's fair, for people who have been waiting forever to play the game, to have to feel as if they don't spend 150 plus tax that they can't play as soon as they could of if they had paid all that money? In other words what I'm saying is....my 80 bucks wasn't enough to get me in as early as is possible instead I should have given them 150 bucks to get in a little earlier? You don't see a problem with that? Heh I do and it pisses me off to be very honest. I shouldn't have to feel like I need to drop that retarded amount of cash just to play like everyone else who paid more? I'm sorry they can do what they want ovbviously but I can still not like it and call it scumy.

Just about every mmo that has come out since wow has been a flop. I really really hope this one doesn't.
