Official BenQ FP241VW (not FP241W) Thread. Reviews and Pics

i am leaning towards buying this after some research, just a few questions if i may ?

1. is this an 8 bit screen ?
2. can someone measure form the desktop to the bottom edge of the display part of the monitor, so i can tell if i need to pu tit on a stand of some sorts.
3. are the colors good enough for casual photoshop work, i am not a pro but want accurate colors.

1. Yes
2. 3-3/8" to bottom edge of the display frame, not the panel itself. I am most likely going to put mine on a desk mounted arm.

thanks, got a link to the arm you are looking at ?

got a link on how to mod for that or is it straight forward ?

yeah i looked and it said shipping is about $115 i believe it was. makes the whole thing about $605 or something like that. I'm about 90% sure I'm going to get this. from all the other monitors Ive been looking at i keep coming back to this one. the first time i seen it i thought it looked awesome. i like the base because its different. just wasn't sure about input lag, contrast ratios, etc.. etc. and if i could deal with a smaller 24 inch from owning a 30.

im thinking if i get the 24 it wont be as demanding for gaming also. i should be able to play everything at 1920x1200. or whatever it is...should be freakn awesome.

Ive got a request for any of you who own this. could you take a pic of it next to something for me. a basketball, keyboard, mouse ...doesnt matter. this way i can tell just how big a 24 inch is and if it will fit on my desk. im on my wifes 20 incher now so i should be able to tell by seeing a pic.

here is one I posted a few pages back of it with an xbox controller in front of it.

Just picked up one of these monitors the other day myself. It's definitely a nice unit, good contrast, colors are very accurate from what I can see, and the input lag is very low compared to most. (I'm sensitive to input lag, so trust me..it's not bad at all compared to samsung and others in a *VA panel)

Only thing I'd like to see a little better quality from is the slight ghosting it produces. It's definitely got some ghosting, and can be seen quite easily just scrolling this forum. Not a terrible amount, but some that can be seen for sure.

The perfect motion helps to hide the ghosting when gaming, but anything over a setting of 1 flickers too much for me to handle. I do use setting one though without too many problems.

Mine has one stuck green pixel off to the left of center by about 1\3rd of the screen, but I can live with it. (it's very...very small, and only seems to show on dark colors)

It was also a fine display, but it didn't sell. BenQ saturated the market with the FP241W and FP241WZ, which were the same displays, except for Perfect Motion. That plus the WZ was not known to have received the last firmware which was by far the best (low input lag, perfect aspect ratio scaling, etc....)

Then they really confused everyone with an almost identically named display called the FP241VW with the same panel, but a different stand and marketed to gamers.

No one knew about either because the FP241W received such market attention, yet these other monitors were the equal (and in some ways better in regards to quality) than the older FP241W, because they all seemed like the same display.

What happened to the WZ model? I remember when that was the hot display to get. Did they never fix its issues? Where does it stand now?

The game mode buttons activate one of two game mode presets, both which turn on perfect motion to different levels I think.

The Perfect motion is supposed to lower motion blur. In some ways it actually does work, but it also induces flickering. If you turn it to level 1 you may notice a tiny bit of flickering, but at level 2 it will be substantial, and things will start to appear dark. But for games with a lot of dark to dark transitions (ie. some Counter Strike Source in dark areas) you should actually notice a pretty good difference.

I have found one application/test that will show you instantly that it does work. If you download PixperAn from Prad.DE and run the "reading test", turn the tempo up to 5 and start with NO perfect motion and you will only be able to go to level 7 or 8 if you are good.

Then turn on perfect motion to level 2 and repeat the step. I was able to clearly make out letters all the way to level 10, and went to level 13. I can only go this high with a CRT.

I'm not saying it's a great feature, but it has it's uses which is mostly dark games and scrolling text :)

Hey 10e or someone else..

Can you guys explain to me the PerfectMotion button or the Game Mode buttons? I have played around with them a bit but have not really noticed any difference in gameplay. I have played all of my games so far in just plain standard display mode and have had no problems with lag or anything.

Also, 10e, that profile you posted a while back, I have enabled it just like the directions said but I have noticed that the display reverts back to the brighter defaults and I have to go back into WinColor and reset the new profile to be the default. Any ideas on why that would happen?

Trying to order this through the BenQ store, but the "thankyou10" code comes up as invalid. Site says "coupon.notcompatible".

thanks a ton guys. really appreciate it. looks like a 24 is a lot bigger than i thought it was....

Are those two 19 inchs sideways?... awesome ! :p pretty sure this is the one im going to get. im gonna have it shipped over night if i do. ill post pics here when/if i get it. ;)

one more comment, these pics got me excited to buy it. i havent been on MY pc for about a month now. cant wait to fire that bad boy back up again.

There used to be blackout problems with this model, where the monitor suddenly turns into a black screen for a few seconds before turning back, when using the DVI connection. Anyone suffers this problem with his fp241vw?

I have never had this problem and i bought mine in August last year... it has a may build date.

3. are the colors good enough for casual photoshop work, i am not a pro but want accurate colors.

Here you have the delta-e of the monitor uncalibrated:
http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=6&ma1=48&mo1=229&p1=2117&ma2=119&ph=5

Uncalibrated grays don't look very good:
http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=6&ma1=48&mo1=229&p1=2117&ma2=119&mo2=388&p2=3597&ph=11

I would say it's too biased towards blue. Calibrated it looks very good however.

I would like to see another calibration test to confirm the results from this page (and to add some measurements that are not available in this page, like black level), as I have previously posted.

do you guys know if anyone has had it go out on them.
its taken a month now to get a refund from my Samsung 305t going out. i definitely dont want to go threw this same crap again. just thought i would ask that before i decided on this one for sure, 100%....

Just in case someone wonders about the input lag of this monitor:

http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1032785502&postcount=21

Looks pretty good.

Also in this post someone describes how to solve the blackout problem (for a FP241WZ):

I have a new FP241WZ. I too had problems with it flipping to black for a bit then coming back.

I found that my nvidia drivers were not sending positive sync pulses for both horizontal and vertical. I fixed the sync polarities in the advanced timings dialog, no trouble since.

Why nvidia did not do this in the first place is a mystery to me. The DDC info indicated positive syncs and the display driver also specifies positive syncs.

This may help you folks with this same problem on the W

Good luck,

LeRoy

One person confirmed that this problem could be solved by using this method, other said it did nothing.

well i did it ! i just bought the FP241VW. i payed $112 for overnight A.M shipping.
i cant wait to game on this bad boy at max res. should look pretty nice on my black glass desk too.

Same here.. I just clicked the submit button. I don't need it tomorrow so I selected ground shipping (hell, I waited almost a month to decide so what's a few more days).

Thanks to all who have contributed to the info on the forum!

Oh, and the thankyou10 code still worked!

Ground isn't that bad. Mine shipped all the way from CA to VA in 5 days flat. Shipped Monday, arrived Friday. Box wasn't too beat up and the monitor inside is perfect.

i been waiting a month already since my 305t went out. I'm too impatient. cant/couldn't wait to get it.

thanks a ton to every one for all the your help and info. i really appreciate it.
it felt at times i was never going to actually get the refund or decide on one for sure.
in the end this was a good learning experience and it gave me enough time to make a "good" decision for once lol ! ;)

*crosses fingers while thinking "hopes all goes well"

LIkely ordering mine today after i call benq and get details on their dead pixel policy and return policy.

details plz.

what is policy?

thx

They dont really have one, if the monitor is broken you can send it back to get a replacement but you have to pay shipping. I called several times about this and that was the answer they gave me.

It's curious to see how the LCD market is becoming a lottery.

lol yeah thats about what i was thinking when i typed that. its more me on that post though because im switching my coolant, tubing, etc. too. guess i was just thinking i hope it ALL goes well.

called BenQ directly 949-255-9481 this is BenQ online store department - those customer service seem not to know too much about return policy

I think you called the HQ customer service which is different from the online store customer service.
Here's the number for the online store CS 952-908-4101. I only know because I had to contact them a couple of times.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Actually I mean the BenQ HQ 949-255-9481 does help a lot. They know much more than the online store CS 952-908-4101. If anyone still has any question regarding BenQ store's return policy I will recommend you call this number.

im definitely going to call. i payed $112 for overnight and i didnt get it. they better be giving me a refund or at least part of it back. by gawd....lol. seriously though, that sucks i was waiting all day on that sucker....

yeah, that sucks it didn't get there as promised. I would try to get some of it credited.

Mj23foreva & jdbrown_82 ,

Any of you plan on doing a review?..i am seriously looking into this panel..currently have the samsung t240..great for games like W0W, but CSS, TF2..i do not like the movement..

any info much appreciated...good luck on your purchase :)

yeah, I'm going to do MY review. post some pics and what i think abou it. I'm not a pro and i don't use any of those ghosting, lag input, screen measuring, color adjusting programs. ill post some pics of games and if i think it looks good or not..lol !

I'm pretty surprised i didn't get it today actually. especially since its in Memphis, TN which is only about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from me. hopefully BenQ will handle this right and give me a bit of a refund. i at least deserve a chunk back.

At least it didn't get lost or something. thats happened to me before. perhaps i shouldn't have said that. oh gawwwdd no. :( hopefully ill get it tomorrow with my coolant, tubing, etc.
look out for my post(s) tomorrow.

Well my monitor is delayed for 2 days. I'll try to post some pictures up and possibly a video because I just bought a hd camcorder (canon hf100). But as for a review my tech level isn't very high and my graphics card is garbage(7900gto). But I'll try make some intellegient comments. I just hope after all this waiting I don't get a broken screen and then have to wait two more weeks for an exchange.

so here is what it says this morning. Sikeston is only about an hour away from me so i SHOULD get it today.

7:30 AM On FedEx vehicle for delivery SIKESTON, MO

7:28 AM At local FedEx facility SIKESTON, MO

After reading Mj23foreva's comments on his review i want to add to what i said up there. i have a Sony cybershot 12 mega pixel 1080 res camera that ill take pics with. it also takes video so ill do a walk around video and one with some game play going on. too bad i dont have a video camera or i would use it.

my specs are in my sig so you know what ill be using. ill post a new thread with my Review/Thoughts on it when i receive it. Same thing about the tech level though. I'm not a pro and i don't use all those tools or even know how to calibrate the color.

here is a link to a few videos i done with the camera. this is so you can see about what the video quality will be like.

i would never pay 112$ to ship something next day.

I guess i could have gotten 2nd day for 25$ more but i can wait until Wednesday i guess.

Response Time 16ms( 6ms GTG) / 12ms (MPRT)

From what I understand Grey to Grey means jack. What you need is the black-to-white-to-black time.

I was told a few years back that to prevent ghosting you need a LCD panel with 8ms or better. This is for FPS that has a high frame rate. So wouldnt the 16ms on this be too slow to use?
