Official BenQ FP241VW (not FP241W) Thread. Reviews and Pics

I'm planning to use the FP241VW for online car racing - specifically, iRacing.

Any comments on how well it should work in that type of application?

okay, silly question here, should i be running in full resolution or 1:1 if am running games and desktop at 1920 x 1200 ?

the manual says there is no way to adjust prefect motion in game mode, default is set to 2 and i wanted to try 1 instead, any way to hack that LOL

You don't necessarily have to be in gaming mode to take advantage of Perfect motion. You can change the value on its own when in standard mode, using the perfect motion button and the up and down keys, or just tap the perfect motion button to set it to 1, then 2, etc... I can't use any more than 1 because 2 or higher induces visible flickering.

Also the gaming mode cranks up the sharpness and adds halos to everything using too much edge enhancement.

If you are in 1920x1200 mode, you won't be able to change the aspect ratio, so if you are playing at 1920x1200, the setting either won't be available, or won't do anything. Running in lower than native res allows different display modes, as long as you aren't using GPU scaling with ATI or nVidia. In general I like aspect mode best because it doesn't aritificially widen the screen or make it tall.

Enjoy!

that expalins it very well, thanks so much:)

How is the quality of this monitor comparing to Dell 2408WFP? Is the built in headphone jack for HDMI only?

Well.. Just received mine today. Panel is beautiful, but unfortuneately, it seems like i have 2-3 dead pixels in the lower left corner of the screen. It looks like one giant dead pixel because they are right next to each other. I'm running undead pixel right now, but do you guys think I should exchange it? Does Benq cover shipping charges for defective units?

I believe you have to pay for shipment to them. Also, can you tell us when your monitor was manufactured? It should say on the shipping box or on the monitor itself.

Well, called them today. SUPER nice lady named MIA is handling my case. I actually have a cluster of 3 dead pixels in one spot, and 4 other dead pixels in close proximity to that cluster.

The MFG date is July 2008.

Mia told me that she needs me to speak with tech, but she said that it was classified as a defect and that she would handle the freight charges to send it back to them!!! I'm loving their customer support already!

So it looks like this current monitor I have is going back. But man, am I impressed with it so far! Let's hope that the new one comes to me problem free!

I'll post updates as they come in.

HDMI text is fine unless you use that ATI dongle for HDMI to DVI. Then it all goes to hell quick! :)

The sharpness control can help here. At level 2 vs. default of 3 it sharpens a tiny bit and looks even better. Weirdly enough, sharpness increases at lower levels, but it also works with all modes and all connectors which is nice.

yea the jack is for hdmi only...

Is it me or is HDMI really blurry for text?

I have it and have played some of GRID on it and it looks pretty perfect. I don't notice any lag when racing while using the 360 controller hooked up in Windows.

Can someone link me the latest drivers/firmware updates?

Edit: I got at least one dead pixel that I'm trying to get rid of. Besides rubbing it and running UndeadPixel 2.2, is there anything else you guys can suggest to get rid of a dead pixel?

CONFIRMED: NEW UPDATE:

The FP series of panels from BENQ are the last series before a TN conversion. As I was speaking to a tech today to get my monitor replaced due to several dead pixels, he checked stock and only found two in the warehouse. I asked that, with such a popular panel, why would there only be 2? He stated that it was being discontinued and the V series is the successor. The V2400 series is going to replace this 24 series, due to cheaper TN Tech.

I'm not sure if this was all said previously and I'm not about to search 20 pages to get the answer either. In other words, don't flame me. I'm just stating what I heard on the phone today.

Really? So no more MVA/PVA panel?

If i had known this, i wouldn't have bought it.

I already have 3 dead pixel, ok no problem for this now but

If a serious problem had to happen to the monitor, so that it would be impossible to fix it, should I expect that Benq replace it to me with a lower quality product like the last TN panels?

I'm disappointeds in benq for this

Well I must say I'm very happy with my BenQ. I received it last week with no stuck or dead pixels. Ordered it directly from the BenQ site when they were running the free shipping sale. Before this I owned a Dell 2407 Non-HC.

Oh and Thanks 10e for the profile and the directions on how to use it.

I just called BenQ up since I have watched this monitor for quite a while and read many good review and reference of it. I was struggling between either G2400WD or this model. G2400WD is out of stock and I really don't want to wait that long. The concern for this model is that if this is a discontinued model and only TN monitors in the future, how would I be warranted. The feedback I got from BenQ is slight differentfrom what I learned here.
1. BenQ USA still has quite a lot of new FP241VW and this is their only MVA panel so they will continue to sell it at least till the end of this year.
2. V2400W is not the replacement model of FP241VW ; they are 2 different series. V is V, FP is FP.
3. They will have new VA/MVA model in the future, but more likely in the 26" or 27" and it won't happen in this year.

So, should I pull the trigger?

V2400W is the alternative to the G2400WD, same panel and features. Also the G2400WD shouldent be discontinued. Mia from BenQ and I have been in communication, and she has stated that the she spoke with the factory and they will have more G2400WD's available around Oct. 20th.

Thanks for the advice! I don't know if it's the monitor or just me, I kinda feel V2400W look is very feminine. If it's not still more than 1 month before the G2400WD will be available I will just buy the G. God, Why this has to be so difficult!

I just got my FP241vw I have a mac so I don't know if I can install drivers or use anything on the disc. So what am I missing out on since I can't use any features on the disc? Is there anywhere to get mac drivers? If I were to run something like parallels would I then be able to install drivers?

If monitor is working with Mac drivers at all supported resolution then you are not missing anything.

Jesse informed me that the majority of V series will replace the FP series as TN panels are cheaper to produce. Sorry, but many manufactures are making the switch, not just BenQ. Mia also stated that there is PLENTY of stock on the VW's and that they will still be produced for a while - at least for this year. My opinion? Jump on the deal while you get the 10% off and just enjoy the purchase. The 24 is a LOT bigger than you'll anticipate, and you'll need a lot of desk space for a 26/27in.

Well looks like this will be replaceing my soyo topaz I got today, there's a mark on the screen and HDfury doesn't work correctly.

Are there any other comparable screens in this price range that I should look into that has an mva/sva panel? I can't afford the HP IPS screen which comes to almost $700.

I'm sorry to have to report this, but apparently BenQ has NOT corrected the black-screen bug which reportedly plagued earlier firmwares on this LCD.

Posts made in this thread suggested that the "re-release" of the FP241VW were shipping with new firmware which eliminated the problem. However, my screen, ordered in August and received in September, manufactured in July 2008, and from all accounts containing the most up to date firmware from BenQ, has now begun to show random black-screen dropouts lasting 2-3 seconds.

There doesn't seem to be any correlation between my activity and the problem. I've noticed it when switching tabs in IE 7, when closing open windows (Photoshop CS once, though it's happened with others, as well), and most recently when dragging & dropping a .txt file into the Recycle Bin. Unless someone sees a pattern here, it's random bug behavior to me.

I should state that I'm running this on older hardware at the moment: XP Home, P4 2.4 GHz, 512 MB Corsair XMS, ATi 9700 Pro (Cats 8.8) over a DVI-I connection. I'm running it in 1:1, Standard mode, Perfect Motion level 0. The monitor's specs according to the hidden menu are:

Vendor: IMS
Panel: AUM240UW01
Scaler: MSTAR
F/W Version: USA 0517

From what I can gather, BenQ is blaming drivers for the issue, but I'm not really buying this. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems? Would a DVI-D connection possibly be a solution? I'm open to all suggestions.

I would probably side with drivers being the cause... Does this happen on other inputs or other computers if you were to hook up to something different?

Thanks for the reply.

Well, the 9700 Pro only has DVI-I and VGA ... would it be worth switching it to analog? Also have a PS2 that could be connected via component. Unfortunately, I have no other PC to try.

The problem is so random and infrequent at this point that it could take days to see if there's a difference. Unfortunately, my 30 days for a return ceases next Friday.

Hi Matsutake, I received my panel two weeks ago and I had the black screen bug hit me once since I have had it, running Ati 8.8 also. I'll keep my eye on it and see if it keep happening. hasn't happend in any game so far.

I am not sure if it will help... I'll be getting one of these monitors in a few days, it's just that this type of bug... I wouldn't imagine it'd be too hard for them to fix, unless it's a hardware mess up that they want to cover up

Not sure how the interaction between video card and monitor could cause a blackout, but this time in the development cycle of this monitor, it would probably be the only thing

I noticed both of you who just posted about this experience are using ATI cards, anyone with NVidia cards had this problem? or could it be the cables themselves being somehow dodgy... who knows what the manufacture provides

Well I just bit on one at newegg :)

Was going to buy directly from Benq but it was so much more expensive even with the code. Tax and shipping was monster... came out to around $540 shipped to California but I got it on newegg for $488shipped - $13 live cashback.

Can't wait :)

wow... i ordered it earlier this month and it wasn't on newegg at the time. pissed i could have saved 45$

Yeah me to, but get this whenever my cousin has ordered it 2 hours later he gets a email that sorry to notify you but because of insufficient stock the item is not available. He has ordered it twice with the same results.

well, also, you get it shipped direct and you have a less chance to get dead pixels, i have no dead or stuck pixels.

there are 2 cupon codes that take 50$ off

it comes out to about 45$ more still than new egg because they charge less SH and 30$ less initally

Hi, I have decided that I'm going to Sell my FP241VW or send it back to BenQ, the panel is perfect in every way, no stuck or dead pixels etc. I ordered it directly from BenQ when it was on sale, It takes up just a little bit to much space on my desk, I have all the original materials and box. If anyone is interested please send me a private message and we can work out all the details. I would prefer to do business with someone here in NJ directly but all can apply. Looking for solid $450.

I'll take it for $450 if you ship first... I have over 100 heatware and you're still pretty new here as far as selling and buying :)

I received the new monitor today after I RMA'd the last one due to Dead pixels. Guess what??

JANUARY 2007 BUILD DATE! I'm pissed, because this is the old firmware. So, just how bad were the issues of the old firmware? Was it just overscan, or were they subject to the blackouts as well?

How do you know they didn't flash the new firmware into this one and sent it to you as a replacement?
