Official BenQ FP241VW (not FP241W) Thread. Reviews and Pics

Response Time 16ms( 6ms GTG) / 12ms (MPRT)

From what I understand Grey to Grey means jack. What you need is the black-to-white-to-black time.

I was told a few years back that to prevent ghosting you need a LCD panel with 8ms or better. This is for FPS that has a high frame rate. So wouldnt the 16ms on this be too slow to use?

The 16ms this panel puts out is definitely a little slow. I notice it quite often. Unfortunately if you hate TN panels you're options are limited when it comes to large screens (24" and up) with good response times. I don't think there's too many that are better in any way.

The good news is that a few years ago 16ms was considered good enough for gaming, and I agree. It's got SOME ghosting, but its hard to see for the most part.

Unless someone knows of a better response time option?

hmmm.. maybe I'm confused but I don't see how you can have a slower pixel response and still have fast lag times? Don't they coincide?

Hey 10E or anyone else I just have a few questions about the color profile...

After installing wincolor and activating the profile do I have to manually change the brightness or is everything already done in the color profile? If I do have to manually change some things what are they?

Also after installing the profile the monitor's UI is pretty messed up, the colors are all distorted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Here is an FP241VW ICM/color profile.

The profile was just finished last night. I used R,G,B settings of 40, 40, 35 and brightness of 30, contrast of 50. White color temperature was set at D65 which is supposed to be the setting for sRGB, and the gamma curve at 2.2. This was created with my Eye One Display 2 colorimeter and BasiCColor 4.1.8 for Windowz.

Keep in mind, that using less than 30 brightness on this monitor can start to crush black a bit. Less than 25 and they will really disappear (with or without this profile), but since 30 brightness is not too bright (164 cdm/2) I find it ideal for everything PC.

Any of you guys try running your monitor to PC off of HDMI. 1920x1200 is not available to me. Is it to you?

Whats funny is below that, most common resolutions both 4:3 and 16:10 are available.

1600x1200 1680x1050 1440x900 1280x1024 1280x960 all the way down to 640x480...........seems kind of weird to me that everything but my native resolution shows up.

Thanks guys for all your notes and facts about the FP241VW, I just ordered one myself from BenQ, its a good deal. I was tired of Dells recent releases and lack of quality, I shouldn't have to wait for 4 revisions of Firmware updates and returns before they get it right, SeeYa Dell. What pushed me over the edge was when my cousin today called Dell up because his 21 inch Monitor was on its way out, well its only 1 week over the Warranty period. Dell bascially said sorry there is nothing we can do about it, and thats from the supervisors mouth. When asked if he could have it repaired for a fee they said flat out no again, they don't fix monitors.

So GoodBy Dell, and Hello BenQ.

Standard picture mode, custom color with 40, 40, 35 for red, green, blue values respectively, brightness of 30 and contrast of 50. The profile sets color brightness relative to that level for good calibration. You will find raising it higher just makes whites brighter and blacks brighter too :(

But if you want to set the brightness to something else higher or lower, try it. Contrast should stay there at 50. I've seen some weird flicker with it at 49 or 51 anyways.

I also recommend not going lower than 28 brightness. Dark colors start to crush a lot at that point and you will lose dark details quite quickly at like 25 or lower.

I've done this, but only with nVidia. I set a custom resolution with the right refresh level and auto-timings and it worked perfectly.

With my ATI I can't for the life of me to get it to go above 1920x1080 with 8.8 cats or lower.

I looked everywhere too.

Can't even enter a custom resolution.

WOOOHOOOO, Mine shipped today from Texas and will be here in NJ on Friday. Can't wait. :)

Moto.

I received mine today and I'm very impressed. The screen is dramatically better than my old dell 2405. The picture quality is top notch.

The only negative comments I have are that it's a bit wider because of the frame and takes up a lot more space length-wise. But then again, it doesn't take as much footprint depth-wise as the 2405 did.

And, the PIP only works for SVGA and Composite, which makes it pretty useless. I used mine quite a lot on the other monitor.

While I don't have a CRT to do an input lag test, I did compare the lag between this one and the 2405 using an old 17" Viewsonic VA712b LCD as a reference. It's supposedly is an 8ms screen.

Compared to the Viewsonic, the Dell was about an avg. of 32ms slower while the Benq was an avg. of 2ms slower. Except for 5 of the 25 shots I took, the Benq had the same time displayed as the Viewsonic. The exceptions were either 14-17ms ahead or behind the Viewsonic.

It's definitely a keeper. :)

Yeah, the PIP is pretty crappy. I would have loved another option for component. The only thing I can think of is if you use it for the ipod or psp.

I don't think you can move the PIP box can you?

I would've liked the component on PIP as well...

you can change the size, position, contrast and sharpness, but it's like putting doors with automatic windows on a sportbike.

I finally got mine today!

BenQ shipped FedEx Ground, but they always attempt delivery when I'm not home, so I opted to pick up the package at the local distribution center to avoid having it left outside of my apartment door. I knew ahead of time that the carton clearly shows what's hiding inside, making the package a prime target for wandering thieves.

Brought it home and started unpacking. The packaging was adequate, though I noticed that if the box was to take a blow to either of the broad sides during shipping, it wouldn't take much force to cause damage to the set itself. Luckily, mine seems to have avoided this issue.

I have to admit that I am surprised at the size of this thing. I came from a 19" ViewSonic A90f+ (Trinitron CRT) which died last month, and had been using a family member's spare 15" Dell TN panel which was awful. Using the FP241VW is needless to say an amazing upgrade. The size of the widescreen with the side panels may actually be too big for some desks. I can't imagine ever going to a 27" or 30" set ... 1920x1200 is a nice resolution with a wonderful amount of desktop space.

Dead pixel check: aside from 3 small stray bits of packaging dust near the center of the screen that scared the bejeebus out of me, I don't think it's got any bad ones (knock wood). Settings out of the box are excellent, but the brightness is intense (which seems typical of new LCDs these days). I'm currently using 10e's ICM file and RGB/Brightness settings with no complaints. Thanks, 10e! You and several other posters here deserve a prize for your help and advice, especially in the extemely frustrating world of LCD shopping.

I haven't noticed any significant ghosting or input lag problems, but haven't tried playing any games yet. All in all, I have to say that I'm impressed for sure, and I'll prolly be even more satisfied as I continue to use it. Big thumbs up thus far for the FP241VW. :D

I heard this model is being discontinued... Anyone hear anything similar?

I was about to get this, but the person at the store said the warranty won't hold since it's becoming a discontinued product shortly... Not sure how much sense that even makes :S

If it's not about to be discontinued... I'd love to pick one of these up

even if it is being discontinued, there is no way that will end the warranty. If BenQ will not have any more of this very same model to replace your broken LCD, they are supposed to send you an equal replacement.

Not sure if this model is discontinued or not but I am pretty sure it comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty. I purchased mine from BenQ directly since I feel more secured to deal with manufacturer directly.

The FP241W had been discontinued, because the original V0 version of the panel was not being produced by AUO any more. The LG L246WP used the same panel and is now gone as well.

If anything, the FP241VW has been re-introduced by BenQ, and AUO is apparently still (if I'm not mistaken) producing the V2 version of the panel used here. People have gotten new models built in May or July of 2008, so this is good news.

Either way, it has a 3 year warranty and BenQ has reserves to ensure they can replace it for you if need be.

got my FP241VW today, wow this thing is large compared to my old 19" CRT

going to play some TF2 tonight and see how it works, but i did try a few minutes @ 1920 x 1200 max settings in game and was getting around 60 - 80 FPS according to evga precision tool, so looks like my system can handle it okay.

i need to set the colors somehow and check for dead pixels, but i don't see any that jump out at me.

i tried that config deal that 10E posted, but i can't get that windows color control panel to install, gives me some error about .net, will hjave to google on that it seems.

so what i need is a free pixel checker and a free color calibrater, or should i trust the n tune deal ?

i will take some pics of my display if anyone wants them, just ask for whatever ya need.

NewEgg has the FP241VW as "Deactivated Item"... regardless, I'm going for this monitor, well almost ready to pull the trigger

Just a quick question about the tilt... Can it only tilt upwards, or downwards as well? From some images, it appears it can do both, but just want to make sure since my monitor is just around eye level as is, and this benq monitor may need to be titled downward slightly (i know, bad for the eyes, but no choice)

I used UndeadPixel 2.2 it was a free download, just do a search for it.

I received my panel today and it is very nice, no dead or stuck pixels.

Good luck with your new Panel.

yes it tilts downward, but not as much as upwards.

not sure on the actual degree of tilt though.

This monitor only tilts downward (about 5 deg) or upward (about 20 deg). It sits low at about 3.5 inches off the desk so you'll probably be looking downward at it and want to tilt it upward a few degrees. That is, unless you're really short with your eye level being around 12 inches above the desk. :D

It's a great monitor even without the other adjustment features. I'm very happy with mine.

Luck would have it, Nothing to do with the BenQ other than the fact that two days ago before I received my Panel my ViewSonic VX922 19inch's power light started to blink on and off and the screen went black, I had planned on using it as a 2nd screen extension. Called View up and even though it was over the warranty period of three years the offered to fix it. Talk about Just in time Delivery LOL.

I really like my new panel and I can verify mine uses the AU M240UW01 Panel Firmware USA 0517. So far I am very happy with the panel.

how do i find that info on my panel ?

To find the information of your panel use the following steps. Panel must be off, while holding the Menu button turn the Monitor on, let go of the menu button once the panel is on then wait a second or 2 and press the menu button again, the information will show up. to turn off the information just turn the monitor off and on again then the menu button will perform in the normal manner.

So this display is still a good buy? I was kind of worried about the response time, but it (16ms) isn't really a cut and dry number right? I just made a thread here, and was looking for a good all around display. Minus the benefit of it not being TN it's still a good pickup for $500? I wanted something for at least the next few years..

i am happy with mine so far, i do not notice any input lag in games like TF2, haven't played anything else yet other than portal as well.

i was really worried about the lag, but it seems the fear was for naught.

Something strange happening here ... I just tried to go through these steps to see my panel info, but if I turn the monitor off and then back on again, it doesn't see a signal. All I get is the "No Signal Detected" box. I cycled through the inputs, but no good. I'm forced to restart in order to get the screen up again.

Connected via DVI to an old ATi 9700 Pro at 1920x1200 @ 60Hz, no screensaver or power-saving (stand-by) settings turned on. Anyone else having this issue?

EDIT: Using Cats 8.8, turned on ATi Hotkey Poller (I had it disabled to save some RAM), and started up the CCC. This apparently fixed the problem, although I don't know why.

Well after BenQ canceled my order TWICE for a bs reason without notifying me, i took it as a sign and decided to look for a different LCD. That HP LP2475W looks pretty good right about now :)
