Odd DDR3 issue on X79

Hey guys,

I've got a bit of an odd one on my system.

I'm running an ASUS P9X79 (no sub-moniker) with a 32GB kit (4x 8GB) of Mushkin Blackline 994072. It's 11-11-11-27 @ 1866 mhz @ 1.35v

It's always run fine on my Z77 system, but on this X79 build it will often lose about 4GB.

4GB? But the sticks are 8GB! Exactly, it's weird, nearly always on cold boots it will detect as 28GB instead of 32GB.

On reboots it'll show up as 32GB mostly, though not always (but by then my hibernation file is already shot due to the difference in percieved memory size).

The system runs fine with whatever is detected, memtest runs fine, no instabilities, just less memory to work with.

Troubleshooting:
- I've tried running it at 1600 mhz, upping the voltage to 1.5v, upping the VCCSA and VCCIO to 1.1v, no difference whatsoever. Stock and OC'd CPU, makes no difference.
- Relieved pressure on the socket by loosening my mount, in case there was mobo warping, no difference.
- Checked the CPU pins for issue, couldn't find any.
- Reseated, cleaned and switched around multiple times, no difference.
- Same problem with both a Xeon E5-1650 (3930K Sandy) and E5-1650 v2 (4930K Ivy), so I thought it's the board, since it worked fine on my Z77 system.

Now I got real lucky on a set of very simple 8GB sticks, 3 Samsungs and a Kingston someone pulled from some pre-built systems, so I tried those for shits and giggles, and they seem to work fine. Several cold boots over the past days and so far the system has always detected the full 32GB.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Try setting one channel (8+8), fire it up, bios counts 16GB, save. Turn off, populate the other, turn on. Bios counts 32GB - hopefully. Monitor from there.

I know it doesn't make much sense, but if I had a nickel for the things that I've come across that were solved with weird ideas...

I'mma give that a try, thanks. Not too hopeful due to the randomness of it all, but won't hurt to try :)

Mine does the same thing. Pretty sure it's an inherent problem with these motherboards - Google searches reveal all sorts of strange RAM-related issues with this motherboard, aside from the typical compatibility issues with certain brands of memory. Some people report entire DIMM slots being inoperable.
