this is annoying but not surprising, it's why I haven't invested any more money into oculus since the buyout... and for the record I don't use google as my search engine or windows as my os or chrome as my browser :p

Please some other folks like Valve release a Quest killer. I did just purchase one for a family member (for xmas) but I'd pay $100 more for a non-FB version, that can be played 100% offline with no "account" crap, I'm sick of all these accounts for every little thing in life tracking our every move. Soon toilet paper rolls will require a "login" ffs

Oculus VR headsets will soon require Facebook accounts

Starting in October, new Oculus VR headset owners will need a Facebook account if they want to use their device..."Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account," the company wrote in a blog post...Existing Oculus headset owners will be able to keep using their standalone Oculus accounts for now, which are just tied to an email address...Come 2023, however, their accounts will no longer be supported and they will lose "full functionality"...

Well, at least it will only affect "new" Oculus VR users... I sold my Rift several months ago after upgrading to an Index. Appears now that I won't be keeping my Quest either past 2023 (or buying any other Oculus product going forward now.)

Facebook probably won't even be around in 2023...so current users should be fine :D

so in 2023, when I have to use a Facebook login, which I dont have, my Oculus will go into the trash can...okay good. :) By then there will be much better headsets out there.

I have a Facebook account, but even still I won't buy one of these now.
I'm probably several years away to investing in VR - but with other plentiful options there is no point in going down this road now.

Well, I sure picked a good time to get a Valve Index and sell off my Rift CV1 setup...

My existing account should be good until 2023, at the very least, but I'll have to think real hard about how I'm going to keep playing the exclusive software I have tied to that account that simply doesn't have any SteamVR-native releases.

Yeah, unlike most people, I have one hell of an aversion to Facebook, even if the Marketplace is apparently much better for finding cheap used cars than craigslist is at this point and that one friend of mine insists there's good Amiga-related groups that don't also post on EAB and other such forums. I'm not making an account there for as long as I can help it.

Not even spoof account? Although what is the point, Facebook already knows who you are just from the fact that you have an Oculus account and have purchased stuff from them. But yeah, Facebook has good marketplaces and the only reason why I still have an account.

Yore!

I hate to break it to everyone, but the only reason vr exists is to gather facial data. It has something to do with pre ruining certain security technology for future spying. That or current spying in high security areas where it's used now. The tech is crap and the games are primitive. If it was being taken seriously it would be going a whole different direction.

No, smart toilet roll dispensors that auto replace rolls and purchase them for you. If you don't pay or allow access and video in your bathroom you don't get to wipe. Which they will spy anyway to make money off of odd websites.

Germany stop-signs Facebook requirement for Oculus headsets: "Not so fast, Zuck". Facebook halts Oculus sales in Germany.
In a statement provided to Heise Online, the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HCDPFI) said, in part:

"The obligation to create a Facebook account [to access an Oculus headset] is legally extremely questionable, at least for those who have already bought a headset. Whether this also applies to new customers is definitely open to discussion. That should largely depend on the design of the contract, which we do not have."
German courts have repeatedly struck down land grabs by US companies; this could well be the latest, and it's hard not to conclude that Germany is in many ways the only country that can currently claim to be the leader of the free world.

You need to make up for that broken quote.
