I'm gonna sound off again. I honestly wasn't impressed with the game play. I played the demo on Switch, expecting Chrono Trigger 2.0, and it just didn't do it for me. It seemed very monotonous and boring, and I guess I never "fell" for any of the characters. The graphics engine and such are superb though, I did love the look, feel, and sound of it. It looks prime for a Chrono Trigger re-master/sequel.
Easily the most over-rated game in recent memory.
They're on the Steam page:Still waiting on the requirements.. Surely it couldn't be that high. It's switch.
The recommended lists a 4-year old low-range Intel processor, a 2-year old low-range AMD processor, and two 3-year old mid-range video cards. Hardly demanding by an metric.$60 is a bit steep (currently $50 for Switch at Best Buy). I'd wait for a sale in the coming months. it's a fantastic game, but it's hardly one of the best if you're looking for a very in-depth story. Each character sort of has their own goals and purpose, but they all seem to really just jump all over the place and scratch the surface.
I'm honestly surprised that the recommended calls for the specs. that it does. The game looks great, but really, barring the impressive background, it's a SNES-style game at best. I'm not sure I'd even notice the 60 FPS over the standard 30 FPS on the Switch.

Windows doesn't stop using memory when a game is running, and I don't think there is any modern video card that fit their performance profile for recommended that has less than 4GB of VRAM.Definitely not demanding but looking at what the game looks like, a 1060, or even 6GB of VRAM seems a bit much at first glance. Then again, I'm not sure how it was optimized to begin with. I mean hell, the game is 5GB! Just sayin'.

The monsters look better than the playable characters.
that's typical for the era it's trying to emulate
Yes. This is definitely a major design decision for those who remember NES/SNES era JRPGs. I can remember how in Final Fantasy IV (aka FF2 US) there is a character who, when he is a boss has a large, imposing sprite standing armored 15 feet tall with his arms crossed. However, much later in the game when he's acting as a "good guy" (though it is an auto battle out of the players' control), his character on the "player" side of the screen is a little tiny chibi-style sprite, facing off against a massive boss creature.
Also, as of today May 16 Octopath Traveler is available to purchase via Steam!
Unfortunately.. it is for $60. I really wish they would not have made such a decision due to the time since original release. I'd be happy to buy the game for PC, but $60 at launch after this delay? Unless there are significant improvements I can't see it getting as many sales as they hope. If they priced it at $30ish they'd have a ton of sales! Let keep in mind that a great many titles that were first on consoles from the Yakuza series (0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2), to Disgaea 5, Valkyria Chroicles, and many others were discounted on PC in deference to the wait and also included all DLC and upgrades.
I wonder how much of this is Nintendo throwing their weight around trying to keep prices high. From what some say they have some control over the title so that's disappointing indeed. Maybe if I can find it on GMG for 25% off I'll buy at release. Right now I see at least a 15% discount so that's something but still...
As for the $60 is Square Enix, they don't release cheap and they take a while before they cut prices on stuff like this. They can also demand the price. Also while SOME of those games you listed were discounted the release came years, or even a GENERATION after their release. This isn't that far out, full price or bust for a long time is pretty normal for this level of thing from this level of a dev.
I don't know about that. There are tons of SE published titles (including those like Shadow of the Tomb Raider) that were heavily discounted shortly after launch and sometimes even before/at. However, the closest parallel I can think of of is Dragon Quest XI which, came out after Octopath Traveler originally and released on PC concurrently with XBOne/PS4 consoles. Pre-launch I can recall there being 20%ish discounts and in the year since it has been available for 50%+ discount during various sales and on reputable keysites. There are other titles too like the Final Fantasy XV PC client and the XII and XIII series, which had HD remasters come to PC but admittedly those were older games. Dragon Quest is the "prime" title of the "Enix" half of Square Enix however, so I think it stands. This is not to say that many of these titles don't "normally" keep the price high for awhile, but pre/at launch and shortly after there are significant discounts and sales. Not to mention of course that games like DQ11 didn't "lag" a year before coming to the PC, either (though I am wondering if the S version improvements will make it to PC considering they are hefty - if they don't it will be very disappointing as its basically an Enhanced Edition).
Between the delayed release of a year , the 2D retro gameplay (which may or may not be fair but in the minds of many it is an issue), lack of any changes to the game itself (as opposed to if they added content) and other factors I think they'd be better off with a lower price of $30-40 for maximum sales. I really want to support the title and I'm glad its coming to PC, but I worry that at this price they won't get as many sales as they'd like and then look unkindly on PC. Hopefully there will be enough sites that can give the game a major discount pre/at launch and certainly more post launch/on sale, but I think they'd overall get far more profit marketing it at $30-40., especially soon after release.
Reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics....I'd give it a go if the price were right.
Just reminding everyone that anyone who wants to buy it on/near release tomorrow, June 7th, GreenManGaming is offering it for around $45 , which I consider a more acceptable price given the delay.
While I've considered waiting until there's a really significant deal (ie $25 ish), but I'm split because this is probably one of the titles we want to be sure that SE knows there's a market for PC gaming. The game was Switch exclusive and hopefully we get a good port, so if we do its important to show we're interested in buying lest they (and potentially other Japanese companies) think that PC gaming isn't worthwhile for ALL their titles, leaving some of them on console etc.
I have it. Will be playing tonight.
