Very excited. I was all set to jump ship back to Apple, but today's release was a big let down. Here's hoping the NP will shine.

Hopefully it won't have a pentile matrix display.

personally I really hope to find a pentile matrix in the Prime.
at such a huge pixel density the pentile matrix will be invisible and pentile technology will have the room to show its advantages:
1) Really more efficient screen
2) Better contrast
3) Improved sharpness
4) Improved color gamut

If you want to know more about pentile please read here:

For those that bought Nexus S off contract or have info:

How long did it take for the FIRST official price drop? I know it debuted at $529, but how long after release did the price drop, and what did it drop to?

Also, on release day or within the first week, what were the prices on eBay? Higher, same, lower than official prices?

I'm talking off-contract pricing, not on contract

From that blog:

September 14, "I just got my hands on what is currently the highest resolution PenTile panel with pixels at 325 dpi. This resolution is very similar to the dpi in an iPhone 4. It is in a smartphone from a major brand supplier that is not Motorola.

As it turns out, this display is a PenTile RGBW LCD rather than a PenTile RGBG OLED. I measured the white luminance at about 400 nits.

Any guesses from the phone experts which phone this might be?"

4.5" 1280x720 = 325ppi. Could this point to this phone being the Nexus Prime, and that the NP would therefore have a 4.5" Pentile screen?

hey, its obvious that the prime will be pentile, too huge pixel density for a normal rgp stripe, but be happy, pentile is really better at that pixel density.

I assumed the Prime would have a Super AMOLED+ RGB screen just like the GS2 except higher resolution? Why are you all assuming it will have a Pentile display? I'm not way too concerned about it since they both have their trade-offs, but I think I would rather have an RGB screen for fear of the visible lines that plague Pentile screens. I just got to handle my friends Droid 3 over the weekend and it was the first thing I noticed about it. Even though it's higher resolution, it doesn't even seem as crisp as my old Droids lower res LCD RGB screen. But I know Moto's Pentile displays aren't AMOLED, so maybe that will make up for it.

Whoops, I missed the LCD instead of OLED part. Might make it a HTC phone then, Vigor maybe?

No, it'll definitely be Samsung. It's been confirmed that "Verizon Wireless will soon launch a Samsung device with very similar specifications — as in, nearly identical specifications — but it just won’t be a “GALAXY S II" (source). That definitely doesn't meet the Stratosphere specs, so there has to be another Samsung phone coming, which lines it up as the Prime. Also, everything leaked about the Vigor so far (which has been a lot, included a whole system file dump) pretty much confirm it's not a Nexus/ICS device.

Moto's pentile is RW GB (W being an added white, replacing the second blue) or something like that.

The other pentil is RG BG, with a double up green, and a massive blue. Moto's is at least all eually sized squares. I still don't like it, though I think the Atrix's (I have) extremely horrid black crush is... appalling.

Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be exclusive to Verizon... I meant to ask my brother about his phone- he works at Google and got the obligatory free phone for the past two years, although both previous phones were with T-Mobile in the US- if this does indeed turn out to be VZW exclusive, I wonder what the Google employees will choose to do... switch carrier and lose any sort of unlimited data, or stay with TMo...

You need to read a bit better. I just pulled up a quote from the Pentile blog that I thought might pertain to the Prime. Upon someone mentioning the LCD vs. OLED comment I concluded that the comment did not refer to the Prime (because that is pretty well established to have an AMOLED screen) and instead the comment on the Pentile blog referred to another device which I speculated might be the Vigor (~4.5" 720P Pentile LCD Screen).

I never said that HTC would be making the Prime.

The curved screen indicates OLED, too. I don't think it's possible with an LCD.

Looks like it wouldn't fit very well in a pocket.

That thing looks like it has more of a curve than the Nexus S, hopefully it's not as curved as it looks or at least as noticeable in person. They may have exaggerated it a bit for that pic just to make it more distinguishable. I really hope they announce the launch date at this event and people get some hands on with it.

I missed your earlier post, so I read it out of context. I read it fine, just not in conjunction with your earlier post :p. My bad.

Lol, if you have the GS2, you're straight for a while still. I would have one right now if Verizon had it because I really don't want to keep tinkering with my Droid and its obsolete hardware. The Prime is most likely just going to be a GS2 with a better display and ICS, maybe a slight CPU clock increase (which could be fixed by OCing the GS2, but I doubt you'd notice a difference esp. running at a lower resolution - it will prolly bench/run faster than the Prime because of that). Unless you're an absolute spec whore, I wouldn't fret over the Prime if I had the GS2. I'm sure it'll get ICS in the next 4-5 months too one way or another.

That 720p looks delicious when using video out to a huge TV. Also NFC transactions and first time google support is awesome, I think I'll trade in.

Trying to decide which carrier I want to get this phone one. For the Verizon customers here, what kind of 3G speeds do you typically see in your market? Sprint's is atrocious so I think I'm done with them. LTE I don't care so much about because of the battery-sucking nature of that beast.

A co-worker just brought in an S2 and is getting 6.5mb down on HSPA+ through AT&T. Fast, but I swore never to go back to AT&T.

is anyone else gonna think that there is a curved tablet behind/docked to that phone?

No. I think it's just an artistic thing to accentuate the curve of the phone. I don't think I'd want my tablet curved.

Man, it does look nice. If it's a metal unibody and has good battery life, I'd consider going Samsung.

I really hope this is the mother of all Android phones and comes out with ICS day one. It would be nice to have a true successor to the Nexus One, that is, a phone that sets precedents for subsequent phones. The Nexus S was nice but it wasn't quite as defining.

I thought the phone would output 720/1080p via HDMI regardless of the phones actual display size?

Verizons 3G isn't much better than Sprint and it's considerably slower than AT&T/T-mobile (which I'm calling their 4G > 3G since it's just HSPA+ until AT&T actually gets an LTE phone). The fastest I've seen on my Droid is ~2.5 Mbit down and that was right next to a tower with full bars. Usually you would be lucky to see 1 Mbit down. But this hasn't really interfered with my usage and browsing isn't intolerable on it for me. I've never really complained about it, but it could be faster. Fortunately I'm right next to a 4G market so hopefully they'll expand out soon to where I work/live.

It's Samsung. You know it's plastic. :p

Doesn't bother me though, because it's lighter too.

I will take an industrial plastic made phone over a glass back any day, which can handle more abuse ?

Indeed, function over form. I'm not a girl/homo so I don't care if my phone looks pretty. It just has to be black and not a brick.
