Hi All

I've got the ASUS M3A78-EMH mATX AM2+ board with a Brisbane 5000+

Back with socket 754, I decided to try my hand at AMD64 hardware to go
with the 2 P4 machines I already had in my home office/shop/lounge area.

The P4s beat the the 754 setup hands down, so I stayed with Intel then.

After playing with my ABIT AW9D-MAX + Pentium D940 machine a year,
I decided to give AMD's new AM2 socket and Spider platform a go.

I realize that I need to deal with the HTT system as well as the Bus Speed
when overclocking my 5000+ (not BE), but I got a little disappointed when
the highest Bus Speed I could get to load under Windows was about 245MHz

Of course, as a mainstream motherboard, the M3A78-EMH is a BiiiiiiiT scanty
on the OCing features, I can set minimum VID for the CPU, the RAM clock as
200/266/333/400(/533 for Phenoms), RAM timings, RAM voltage up to 2.2v,
and the Bus Speed from 200 to 300 in 1MHz increments (this is actually a big
win over the MSI 690G I tried first BLEH! none at all, natch ...

So what am I missing besides a better board for OCing? I set the HTT multiplier
to 4X (800MHz) to keep the HTT around 1000MHz with the upped Bus Speed,
but no matter what I try, 245 won't even boot, goes back to default, and a BIOS
message pops up "Over Clock Failed Press F1 To Continue F2 To Reset Defaults"

I appreciate any insight or instruction you can provide me here.

I am using a Scythe Mine HSF, so the CPU temps are no problem...

so ... am I the only one on here with this board?

or does everyone else with this board just not overclock?

looking for a little help here guys, cmon now ...

can anyone tell me what are the most important components when overclocking on these new AMD chipsets? RAM, or is there a particular core/revision I should try?

What're your RAM speeds like? What multiplier are you using?

245x4 = HTT980.
245x2 = DDR2-490 @ 1:1.

Voltages?
What is your overclock so far?

And don't expect too many people with 780G boards yet. Its quite new. (Although quite the winner)

Hiya pal, er, uhm, letseehere...
Currently at FSB 240 with HTT x5=1200 and DDR2-675 as 800 @ 880
The only access to CPU volts offered on this board is Lowest VID = 1.40
The RAM is set to 2.20v, the topout for this board... since its DDR2-675...

HTT @ 1200? That can't be good. I thought you had it set at x4.
RAM doesn't necessarily need to be at 2.2v. Not that it affects stability or anything.

Looking at your sig and your FSB, it seems you've pretty much hit the high point for K8 chips. But if you're stuck on FSB, then I'd recommend you to see if you can switch to a lower memory divider. 880 is quite a bit for just XMS2s.

@ artless1: Luckily you have a 65W TDP processor, I have bad news for you, the boards with 780G chipset have some problems with 125 W TDP processors.

heh ... so I see... http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1293809

and I guess like a lot of folks I went with this board partly on price ($95) and partly with an eye on a future phenom upgrade...

as for the htt multiplier, i have tried a 3x and a 4x, which seemed to mostly make no difference...

I originally had a brisbane 3600+ in this 780g mobo, and it went as high as 273 fsb...
although i'll grant you, that only made it hit about 2.7 GHz ...

Weeeee. Yeah, this is my 24/7 OC off the stock cooler too ;)
