Hi, Im currently running an overclocked 8400 (3.8ghz with memory at 1066) and Im contemplating an upgrade to a Q9550. The question is, will I notice a significant improvement in encoding times etc or should I just put the money towards an i7 build later in the year?

I was hoping to wring out a little extra life out of my existing platform via this mini upgrade before ploughing $$$ into a new i7 rig at a later date.

I would wait a few days for the Phenom 2 to launch just to see if that will have any impact on pricing. other than that I only play games and porn surf so I have no idea how useful the quad would be for other tasks.

The i7 is more effecient clock for clock than the current quad cores, so waiting may be best. With that said most (but not all) programs have trouble scaling with more than two cores so it is more about the CPU speed than how many cores. You may not see any extra benefit and if you are unable to get the 9550 to at least your current speed (3.8Ghz) you may actually notice it takes longer to encode

You may want to check some benchmarks here to make sure its worth the cost.
