Observium Alerting? Anyone done this personally?

Anyone use Observium in an enterprise environment? I've gotten it set up. It's monitoring my firewall, switches, storage array, etc. However I cannot get it to alert outwards beyond a test email. I know I'm doing something wrong. Right now I'm just just doing up/down as I haven't bought the threshold license yet.
