NYC Official Wants Comcast To Offer $10, 10Mbps Internet After Merger

If NYC threw all those poor people out and they started wandering the countryside, you'd be changing your tune.

Well if NY didn't offer such cadillac level welfare programs maybe NYS wouldn't be such a welfare state so there wouldn't be as many to "wander the countryside."

In the last 80's and early 90's I worked in an ER and was stunned to find out that people could, and did, apply for NYS welfare and medicaid before ever stepping foot in the state and in fact we actually had people come directly from the airport and/or bus terminal when they first got to NY and they already have their Medicaid card.

I don't know about today, but back then if someone got out of the military they couldn't apply for unemployment in NYS for 30 days, under the idea that they haven't been in the state to see if they can find work, but the same leftist idiots that decided on that wanted to make sure people could be approved for welfare before even entering NY for the first time. What a crock!

If they "wandered" their way into my living room at night they'd get two in the chest.

Seriously I can give less than a fuck about the poor (adult). It's a choice, period. I've never been unemployed since 17. I didn't have parents pay for college or take out a loan. I worked full time and went to school full time. During breaks I worked 70-80 hours weekly and saved it all for tuition. No "spring breaks", etc. I'm not special, if I could do it anyone else can too - they just choose not to. Why does some non-contributing slug deserve to be taken care of by my dollar?

To be clear, I'm not against helping someone that recently lost a job, that can happen to anyone. I'm against supporting people that don't put in a massive amount of effort to help/take care of themselves. Personally I'd rather double unemployment benefits for long term workers and zero out welfare benefits. Help the people that contribute and starve the parasites.

I don't see this happening unless they're required to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if half their internet customers would switch to the 10 dollar plan.

Mistaken? Not at all...
"To each according to their needs; from each according to their abilities."

Holy smokes, I sincerely hope this isn't indicative of public education these days. You've provided a Marxist quote. The definition of "communism" is public ownership of the methods of production. Completely different, and not at all what the proposed regulation states.

Egad.

communism is bad...

Granted: some poor people given the opportunity will drag themselves out of poverty and make something of themselves but sadly the majority will only use the internet to download porn and frolic about on social media.

If they want the internet than they need to pay for like everybody else.

Ignorance of the meaning of the words you use is a fair bit worse...

If this goes through you would pay more to help subsidize those who qualify for the $10 plan. If you were paying $60, I doubt you qualify.

Heh, I am pretty sure the only reason the rates dropped is because of actual competition from companies like Charter... now that the rates have dropped for WoW!, it is more in line with what Charter has been charging for a long time.

The biggest provider around here is Comcrap. So glad I don't live somehwere around here where they are the only choice.

Them and Mediacom both have stupid data caps around here. WoW! and Charter are the only residential services that I know of that don't have data caps where I am at.

And where I live, my choices are AT&T, Mediacom, and WoW!

AT&T is by far the worst price at $97 for 18Mb.

yeah! lets have this in NYC!

BUT FUCK anyone 30 seconds out of the city!

Actually if the NYC politicians didn't force such massive social spending on NY taxpayers, largely to benefit NYC, we would all be much better off.

When the economy was tanking it wasn't Western or Central NY that wanted a increase in welfare payments, that can directly from leftists in NYC.

Cuomo appears to want to finish the job his father started and kill off NYS completely.

The only massive social spending NYC does is to the rest of the state. Your economy didn't tank because you basically don't have one. Don't kid yourself.

NYC has to have a city farking income tax to make up for all the money the rest of the state leeches from it.

The state sets the rules and mandates for programs such as Medicaid and special education, but requires localities to pick up much of the cost. Such costs are harder to support with Upstate’s stagnant economic base than they are in New York City and its suburbs. They help explain why the Empire State’s local property and sales taxes are among the highest in the country.

Localities have to spend a fortune on services that serve very few people since they are mandates. Since NYC basically runs the state, it's your fault that you have to send money our way since you require us to have certain programs. Want to send less money our way? Drop some mandates on small/rural counties.

Yup. Sorry people from the rest of NY, but you're being carried by NYC. The gross product of the NYC metro area (GMP) was 65.7% of the gross product of the whole state in 2004 (pg 61 of this PDF). In 2012, the GMP of NYC was the 13th highest GDP ...in the woooooooorld.

This is basically true for any state with a major metropolitan area.

Eliminate Atlanta from Georgia, Chicago from Illinois, Seattle from Washington, San Francisco and LA from California, Las Vegas from Nevada, Denver from Colorado, St Louis from Missouri, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh from Pennsylvania, etc...etc...

Hardly a point of relevance when you consider the obvious: A higher concentration of people means a higher percentage of revenue comes from that one area.

Its a point of relevance when people living in Podunk whine about sending their tax money to the city.

and irrelevant to the point that I was responding to. Any major metropolitan area is going to carry the rest of the state by sheer numbers alone.

Since the $10 service costs $5 total, they are still making 100% profit margin, hard to keep a straight face while complaining about 3-4 times the average business's profit margin.

And ... Fuck Comcast anyway.
