It's been quite a while since Nvidia rebranded its cards and we were beginning to think it has dropped the habit altogether. However, several leaked ads, courtesy of German retailer MediaMarkt all but confirm the new naming scheme.

More here.

Proof:

GeForce G100 (rebranded 9400GT):

Err, I think you mean 100, 120, 130? Cuz 300 would imply it's better than their current highest offerings, and that's definitely not the case....

But thanks for the heads up.

lol... packard bell? i wonder if they come with windows 95 pre-installed on them.

For fricks sake how many times can the poor 8800gs be re-branded?

Hahaha Media Markt knows how to fool people into buying that stuff... "Look people, we're the first ones to sell you this amazing new machines with a GeForce GT 130, with a freaking HUUUGE amount of video ram!!!!111111" They do sell good stuff, but they're also known for this kind of offers :rolleyes:

As for NVidia, this is ridiculous! I mean, take an old ass 8800 GS, rename it two times and double the amount of memory on it again to be able to put some cool numbers on the package? Hell, even a fourth of the memory would be too much for that card xD Please give us some real reasons to buy your cards... give us new cards! :D

Oh NOES...call da Police.......Nvidia is re branding their products and selling them to OEM's....how evil of them to do that.....

Seriously, whats the big deal....company's do this all the time...

@Crosshairs

Yes, but Nvidia takes rebranding to a new level, I bet they have one marketing section just for this :p Seriously how many times can you release one product and call it new, talking about 8800GT here.

It's not such a problem.

If you're reading HardForum then you're already smart enough to avoid a rebranded low-end 9-series card. Stupid people will buy them, expecting better performance. More money for Nvidia, no loss to you personally.

I'm glad they are doing this. The whole 8800GTX 9800GTX debacle was fucking retarded. -1 Nvidia on that.

They need to find suffixes and just stick with them for every new series of cards. That way you know what's the high end, middle, low, just by the name of the card. But the important part is that they stick using it every series 3xx 4xx 5xx etc ...

PLEASE! :eek: :confused:

They aren't doing it to have one naming scheme, they are doing it so people will buy these cards. If nvidia has showed us anything it is that they do not give a shit about the naming of their cards.

It should straight itself out once the next gen hits. Low 300's will be your well known X100 - X300 lines (X being series number). The mid 300's will be the X400 - X700 lines & the high 300's should be there X800 - X900 lines. So when it is all said & done, it SHOULD be like

Low End
G310
G320
G330

Mid Range
G340
G350
G360
G370

High End
G380
G390

You can give or take on the G340 & G370. This is how Nvidia better have it by the time the next gen hits. Just slap on the expected GT, GTX, GTO, GS, etc. It's only a matter of time before we see a card named G380 GOD =). It's a simple system that they should be going by. It's not that complicated outside of the different lettering at the end of the models. Where Nvidia messes up is with the lettering. They tend to release models that are exactly the same but labeled differently or upgrade a card but retain the same name. All they have to do is adjust the number at the end, such as what they are doing with the GTX 285, to let people know that this is a newer & better model. They make it much more difficult than what it should be.

I'd rather have nVidia reduce the number of cards within a generation to a manageable count. Within the 8xxx series we've got more cards than I could count with the fingers of two hands, which I think is ridiculous. The GTX series is nice and easy aside from the GTX 260 192/216 issue so far, though we'll get like five more GTX cards before GTX 3xx is launched at the current rate (285, 295, and then they didn't start on the low-end cards yet).

Makes me happy I stay away from the bleeding edge :)

I don't know, it just seems like Nvidia is constantly setting themselves up for more confusion.

Right now we have:

GTX 295
GTX 285
GTX 280
GTX 260

9800GTX
9800GT
9600GSO -> GTS 130
9600GT
9500GT -> GT 120
9400GT -> G 100
8400GS

Then there's GT212, 214, 215, 216, 218 coming down the pipe. Say we assume that GT214 will be named GTX 240 or something. Where will GT212 go assuming it's faster than GT200b? They've already used up all the numbers above GTX 280. That is, unless GT2xx series chips will be used for GTX 3xx series cards. And the DX11 architecture will drop under GTX 4xx.

*giggles*

Somehow '286' doesn't sound very fast.

Sorry, geek moment, please resume as usual :D

NVIDIA is desperate...for both monies, customers, and something to lay a punch on AMD. :]

Btw, doesn't necessarily matter "which way NVIDIA should do it," because as long as they can find something that can bring them some money, that's all that matters...for now anyway, until they figure out something against AMD.

And now that AMD has XFX or whatever...

I wouldn't say that they are desperate. They're still pulling in more revenue than AMD as a whole. A huge portion of there money comes from retailers like Dell, HP, Gateway who push there GPU's over AMD offerings. Off the shelf sales may tell a different story but that like's comparing Blu Ray sales to DVD. Shelf sales being equivalent Blu Ray of course =).

Seems to make sense to me, the naming change that is. They have stuck with a linear sequence, Geforce, then Geforce 2, then 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 for a while. Only now have they decided to change and not keep the sequence going. Before you could find the number for the sequence in the card name. I think it's entirely reasonable that they change now that they are getting into double digits. So now they going into triple digits for their cards, and since they are continuing the previous generation (as is normal especially for low end/mobile devices), they need to rename it. It does cost money to rebrand, so they would only do it if they are going to continue selling it.

Also, it's obvious to me that this was planned long ago. They have had a while to think about things, especially since they have been on top for a long time with the 8x00 era.
