Which would you choose for a graphic artist.


Im trying to make a $5,000 Dell Work station for a graphic artist that will be coming into our company...

I thought he was an idiot when he requested a Dell XPS with a GTX280 and only configured a $3500 system when specifically our company allotted $5,000 for this budget.


BTW this $5,000 budget is only for the TOWER ALONE.

I have $500 more alloted for a 24 inch monitor.

All help would be appreciated!
 
Depending on color accuracy requirements, more money on the monitor might be better. Also, depending on the work being done on the tower a quadro may not help and the rest of the specs might not matter depending on the OS/software being used and render farm availability.

Maybe the new hire was just being conservative.

More details as to the req's for OS/software to be used, current setup etc will help
 
its a new company all I know is that the project manager assigned me to blow the whole $5000 on the tower and another 500 for a monitor.

Also 8gbs of RAM is a must...I dont see why...but that was one of the requirements. So im guessing this will run off a windows 64 bit operating system...
 
Lie on the monitor and tower money allocation or something. :p

It'd be better if you had a 1000 dollar monitor budget for this type of thing.

Get a Mobile workstation for the man!

Dell M6400, 17" Precision laptop.

2.53Ghz Quad core, 8gb ram, dual 320gb 7200rpm drives (and a eSATA 1tb drive) and a Quadro FX 3700m!
 
Don't go for the mobile option unless it's required; a good tower can run circles around them for the same price.
 
Not mention that laptops are quite a bit easier to break and harder to fix. With all that power, 500 on a monitor seems like a bottle neck. Better to spend 4500 on tower and 1000 for monitor.
 
Dual 3700s all the way. They're G92 cores and the 4600 is a G80 core. That's like asking for one 8800 GTS 640 or two 8800 GTs. The FX 3700 is equivalent to the 8800 GT in the fact that they both have 112 stream processors.
