NVIDIA’s official GeForce GTX 1060 landing page now alludes to a new model of the Pascal-era GPU: the specs section has been updated with a “GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB” featuring 6 GB of GDDR5/X memory. Hot Hardware suggests this is NVIDIA’s way of countering AMD’s upcoming Polaris refresh.

NVIDIA's specifications chart doesn't differentiate memory speeds between the GDDR5 and GDDR5X versions, and simply lists 8Gbps. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the GDDR5X variant will not be clocked a little faster, as NVIDIA doesn't differentiate between 8Gbps and 9Gbps GDDR5 variants either. It's all a little confusing at the moment.

The difference though is that this is GDDR5"X" memory, which as we know can operate 10GHz/11GHz and even 12GHz with good power and cooling.

Even just 9GHz would raise the memory bandwidth from 192GB/sec to 216GB/sec and 10GHz would make it 240GB/sec and 11GHz would be 264GB/sec etc....

No telling what it will end up being yet I guess or the potential in overclock.

Interesting that NV is going for mem bandwidth upgrade, and AMD is going for engine clock speed.

Should I sell my 1080 and get one of these? :wacky:

Not sure it's so useful for gamers, but it looks like a good little GPU to get into deep learning.

My wife's 1060 msi armor is good enough for everything at 1080p..

Would this Just be a step between 1060 and 1070.

I'm guessing OEMs will release OC cards which should benefit from the extra bandwidth and get better performance.

BTW Pascal doesn't have tensor cores, so no deep learning.

i find it interesting that NVIDIA doesn't consider the 2060 a competitor to a Polaris refresh.

This is a weird time to be alive in GPU land

You don't need tensor cores for deep learning. They accelerate certain types of calculations, but aren't required to do them.

This should have specs that are VERY similar to the 980ti, right?

I'm not surprised given the new pricing scheme of RTX cards. RTX2060 will likely be too expensive for the market gap it's supposed to fill unless they create a huge price gap between 2060 and 2070. For most gamers 1060 is probably decent enough as it runs everything maxed out at 1080p and can do VR as well as reasonable settings.

AMD is also releasing a Radeon RX 590 card. It looks like a die shrunk Xbox Scorpio GPU to me. This screams of industrial espionage. How did nVidia know that AMD was poised to release a new GPU? This all seems way to coincidental to me. There has to be a mole.

Not even close..The 980TI, especially AIB models with good cooling, are on a par or faster then a 1070. Think of this as a 1065...

I don't like this 1060 trend of different models. Just leads to consumer confusion.

At least they are actually enhancing the card this time. We have seen way too many instances of bait and switch lately. The RX 580 is the latest example. Fine, the cards are meant for Asia only but that means that now it's impossible to know which GPU you are getting if you are buying a card off of Ebay. nVidia did this with one of their cards also recently. I believe they put DDR4 RAM on the card which gave it 1/3 the performance.

It is still intended to confuse. Throw a "ti" on it. Both camps need to clean things up. Whats wrong with a card ending in a 5? They used to all the time.

Because of Nvidia I have pretty much dropped PC gaming and moved to Consoles because of their GPU Pricing and tactics. Thank you Nvidia.

? I already have a 1060 with 6gb of ddr5 memory I bought like last year or whenever it was and it's half the size of that card. So this one has more memory bandwidth. Big fucking whoop. A faster gpu core along with more rather than just faster memory is always better.

Memory Bandwidth = "I raised this up 600Mhz and I'm getting 3 extra FPS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
..for games, nobody beat me with the Compute stick please.......

It's confusing but it's just like the 1080 which was upgraded to gddr5x, they stop making the old one atleast so it's only a brief period and it usually comes at no extra cost for consumers... historically speaking.

I don't think it really matters to most, though it would be interesting if that's the case. Either way, I'm more interested where it will be positioned in terms of price. Given this upgrade to 1060, 2060 must be way above the usual price point previous generation occupied. If it has no RTX it will likely not end well for it either as that's one of the main features NV is peddling with this generation which supposedly demands hefty increase in price.

Not really new, just newly available to retail markets in the west (ie... outside of China). These have been around for at least a year as an OEM China only purchase mainly used for internet cafes. You could find them on the usual grey market websites but the cost was just NOT worth it. Some people still bought them during the bitcoin mining frenzy when they were the only thing remotely available.

I admit I never heard that before. On the other hand it continues with the scrap yard approach I've commented many times on with NV and pascal. Really seems like they'll slap any spare parts together at this point to get rid of various stock. It'd be pretty amusing if someone did a family tree of just the desktop cards for Pascal. It's getting to be a pretty big tree.
