I wish they announced the 1080 and Titan XP at the same time. I did the free side grade from Titan XM -> 1080. Might have jumped on the Titan XP.

Let us know how it goes. The xDevs guide says to use flat PCB style 0805 resistors...

Makes me think though, probably the most easiest and safest approach would be to buy 3 of those PCB styles resistors, glue them on top of the sense capacitors, and then paint the ends up with conductive paint.

    So I reckon:

    1. Get 3 0805 10 ohm resistors off ebay (min order is 10, but probably handy):

    SMD SMT 0603 0805 1206 Chip Resistor 10R 1M OHM Range | eBay

    2. Glue those on top of the 3 capacitors mentioned in that xDec guide:

using some flexible, ultimately removable general purpose glue, kinda like:

Mxbon Multipurpose Glue 50ml | Maplin

    3. Then paint the ends up with some purpose made silver conductive paint:

    Job done!

No soldering required. Easily removed, and depending on choice of glue, nothing left behind.

    Anyone can do that. (y)

Guys don't bother with physical mods unless you're a number chaser. I have a friend that is working on cracking the vbios for Pascal and I'm confident he'll get it done once he receives his system. When that happens ill ask him to release a modded Titan X vbios for us.

Sell the 1080 and grab a Titan X. I returned mine after two weeks.

Like I said he will get around it. He's well known in the notebook bios community, so he'll release a mobile version first. You'll know when it happens. ;)

I bought a smd 0805 book for 15 bucks, gonna glue it with silicone. I over paid in the sense that I didn't need 170 varieties of resistors lol, but I didn't want to wait a month for a pack of ten to come from china. That is baller am I right, lol jk. Now just got to secure some conductive paint or pen etc.

I have a friend who has a few EE colleagues who would be willing to do the resistor mod for me most likely. The question now is, "why?", because in terms of real world results I'm not sure it'll make any tangible difference. But....

I really wish they would release an unlocked BIOS.

    That's very good to hear.

Though I'm worried that, since the 1080 regular and X are on shitty half-arsed PCBs (neither are fully loaded), they simply cannot handle the watts our upgraded cooling solutions can provide, hence the reason why Nvidia have locked it down so hard.

The VRM circuitry on a Titan X cannot handle 1.2v at stock cooling. Period (IMHO). Talk to the xDevs guys I'm sure, but I mean, just look at the PCB: It's a skimp, it's not a Tesla part; it just can't do it!

So while you could theoretically tell a Pascal X to do 1.2v on its current PCB/cooling, that's all it'd do, for like 9-18 months, and then it'd be dead (PCB long before silicon).

Would it be worth it? [Elcor tone=Annoyed] Yes. [/Annoyed] :p

All I'd really want is boost removed and a higher power limit. I'm not looking to increase the voltage as I think Pascal is likely limited in how far it can clock on this new process.

Luckily there is a seriously diminishing gain going over 1.2v on extreme cooling. There is no need for using daughter cards as so far seen, the ref TXP board has taken to hard mods relatively well.

I know that synthetic benchmarks are frowned upon around these parts but I've been trying to break 9000 in Time Spy on my current setup to unlock the Steam achievement :p

Finally got it: I scored 9 091 in Time Spy

Water cooling helped a lot, and then tweaking the GPU Boost curve allowed me to get a little bit more average clock speed when the card is power throttling (you need Afterburner 4.3.0 Beta 14 for this). That was able to net me the extra 200 points I needed to go from 8880 to 9091.

    I scored 9 091 in Time Spy

This is about 92% faster than my overclocked 980 Ti in the same system in the same benchmark.

    Result

I think this is all I can get out of it unless we can unlock the power limit. Voltage doesn't seem to be a real issue, as I can't even get into the upper voltage limits without hitting the power limit.

^^Overclock your cpu to around 4.8ghz. Your gpu score is solid, but your cpu is holding you back.

Someone replies with that literally every time. I think I need to add a disclaimer to my signature or something. I have a really shitty 4770K. Do you not remember how bad they were at overclocking? Very few 4770Ks do 4.6GHz let alone 4.8, and mine won't budge past 4.4 without a shitton of voltage.

I'll eventually grab a new CPU.

Hehe, yea I bet that gets old. Grab a Skylake, they work well. I grabbed one off the shelf from the local microcenter. Stock, ie. not delidded, I've clocked it to 4.9ghz, that's the limit for this chip till it gets delidded. 4.8ghz is done relatively easily however at 1.424v. Temps are mid 60s doing prime w/ igpu off. Screw paying siliconlottery lol. Get the MC warranty and you can push the hell out of it as OCing falls into their sales pitch for their warranty.

Btw, I still have my x79 3930K mb/cpu setup that does 5.2ghz. It's in a spare rig with dual RX480 rads w/ QDCs. I've been meaning to swap the TxP over to it just to compare the physics differences. From memory the 3930K at 5ghz still does around 2K higher physics. That said, I prefer the Skylake to SandyE, easily.

I live in FL so no Microcenters around :(

If I wait til I get my bonus next year I can probably build a Skylake-X box, so I am trying to hold out for that.

    Why?
When the SKU for GTX1080/GTX1070 was revealed to be named GP104...EVERY single tech enthusiast should know that a bigger SKU was comming later...I am surprised that you didn't have a clue...really!

    Whoa calm down there.

I am not one to wait possibly months and months while my Titan XM devalued. I am also not going to resell my 1080 for a 30-40% increase I don't particularly need at 3440x1440 60Hz. My money is going towards the Vive now.

The electrically conductive paint may be too resistive for this application. The resistors themselves are already pretty small. it wouldn't take much transitivity in the conductive paint to throw off the numbers to the point where it may not work.

    1. Worries about resale value on $1,000 video card.
    2. Buys HTC Vive whose used market value is 38% under retail of $800.

Bahaha. I got a free trade Titan XM -> 1080. I was worried the 1070 would half the Titan XM resale.

I can get a Vive for $300? No shit. I'll have to check that out.

I am not going to not buy something because it has bad resale value. That's asinine. But if I know my card might have the value halved I am not going to wait for an unannounced, who the hell knows when it'll go retail, product. It just bugs me companies are so secretive. Especially with a $1.200 product.

I am still happy with my decision. Titan XP was a little underwhelming. I don't really need it's performance.

    Well, $300 under $800, or $800 - (0.38 * $800). Been seeing them go for $500-$600 USD on eBay.

Based on GP100 we knew they could do 600mm^2 + HBM2. I was hoping for a gaming equivalent. Would have been expensive but it'd be the last GPU I'd need for years.

Titan XP is a beast no doubt. I just had something else in mind based on the professional side.

I don't feel like the Pascal Titan is held back in the slightest by its RAM, be it by quantity or performance.

I fail to see what adding HBM to it would really accomplish.

From what I have seen, GP102 does not look one tiny bit bandwidth-starved.

All overclocking tests I have seen done, shows that overclocking the memory is the part that yields the least performance increase in gaming.

So I don't get it either...

It isn't by much. Easily testable.

I was talking about 600mm^2. It'd probably be around 5-10%, which by nature of a Titan, I'd want that performance.

To do the test properly you'd have to have the card hard power limit unlocked. IIRC my 1080 with PL hard modded away I got somewhere around. 3-5% increase in FPS from 10% OC. So there are gains to be had, not much, but there are. I would guess in the 5-10% range.

My guess is some people want the latest tech whether it has any benefit or not.

To me, that is kind of silly. I don't care about the tech if there is no benefit to having it.

You do know a lot of "gaming specific" hardware is NOT present in GP100 right?
And using diesize to anything but prlacing the SKU is in the product stack is...well...meh.

Yeah you could see that by the spec sheet. That's why I was hoping the GP102 would have been gaming specific at 600mm^2.

They'll eventually have a 600mm^2... I am not hurting and will wait for it. As long as it's not too close to the next did shrink.

The same way I see it.
R9 Fury had HBM...but that didn't save it against the 980Ti or the Titan X.

    Performance is king.

And I ridiculed the Fury X way before it launched.

Pascal on the other hand, which I proved with real world tests, could benefit slightly from higher bandwidth memory.

You asked why, I said why, based off GP100 I expected (or I should say hoped for) a gamer centered Titan at the same die size and HBM2. This was before the leaks, before it released.

I don't think that was ever a realistic expectation. The GP100 is a very large and complicated die. Chips binned with all cores enabled, able to clock sufficiently high, within reasonable voltage are going to be relatively rare and fetch MUCH higher margins as Tesla chips than they ever could as gaming chips. Nvidia would be crazy to sell a full GP100 as a gaming card, at least until the yields pick up and they have some left over after satisfying the higher margin Tesla demand.

As far as single generation performance increases go, going from a Maxwell Titan to a Pascal Titan results in some pretty awesome performance increases, percent-wise, which we haven't seen in a single generation in some time, so honestly, I wasn't expecting any more than what we got, and it certainly is not a disappointment to me.

780ti -> Titan XM had the same increase as Titan XM -> Titan XP

I forget. It's been going on for too long.

Actually, I said I wish nVidia announced the Titan XP slightly soon because I might have done that over a 1080.

Factum said something about I should have known it was coming in a demeaning manner.

I responded I wanted to ditch my Titan XM before the 1070 tanked the value (free upgrade to 1080) instead of waiting for an unannounced, TBD card.

Then he wondered why I was slightly underwhelmed by the Titan XP like I was attacking his child. I responded that my expectations (realistic or not does not matter) based on the GP100 were a slightly different card.

That would be too easy and nice for the consumer and very un NV like. They only do things that maximize their bottom line.

That said, I have enjoyed attacking all those games that kicked my ass when I ran a multi gpu setup. Muahaha, I think to myself you ain't got nothing on this king kong lmao.

This I did not realize. I skipped that generation, keeping my original Kepler Titan until I went dual 980ti last year.

    Yeah, this annoyed me too.

I had been using my 1080 for a week when the Titan was announced. I sold the 1080 put the one of my 980ti's I had left back in and ordered the Titan.

Luckily the Gigabyte Gaming G1 1080 was still out of stock everywhere when I sold it, so I was able to get all my money (except shipping) back.

I don't think it was apparent at all this year that there would be a Titan this soon.

First of all, the 1080 announcement itaelf surprised everyone. I was of course expecting that a Titan would come along eventually, but I was thinking maybe 6-8 months down the road. Not immediately.

I was planning on using a 1080 for 6-8 months then upgrading to the Titan when it came along. I was just completely surprised by the timing, and so was pretty much everyone this time aroubd, so I don't think it's fair to say "you should have known".
