I've been gaming on my NVidia 760 2g and stumbled across a used Radeon 480 with 4g from a buddy ... how long ya figure I'll be able to get by on that before I'll need a new GPU?

Sell it now at the inflated prices due to mining and then get a used 1070 when prices come back down.

Put the RX 480 4g in last night to replace my NVidia 760 2g and ran:

Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.6.8

It's glitchy ... I have to keep restarting in order to get things working but, one restart usually does it. When I put the 480 in the x16 slot it would never show up to be detected in the devices so, I ended up having to put it in the next slot which is x8 - is that ok or will that cause me any performance issues?

sounds like a bad card, I'd return it if possible
even the RX480 will be rather bottlenecked by the Phenom II in any case for most modern titles.

Is there any way to test that x16 PCIe slot to see if it's even working properly? That could be the issue or, it could be the 480 or both. I had to have my 760 in that x8 slot too and forgot about the issue with that x16 PCIe slot.

This is only meant to get me by for awhile longer until maybe a 2nd revision of Ryzen motherboards and maybe more CPU & GPU updates and optimizations are finished or at least looking really good - good enough to make a purchase. Then, later I'll decide between Volta vs Vega depending on performance per $.

Your PCIe slot running at 8x or 16x is not really going to affect how well the RX 480 works. If you're content with being in a holding pattern until you can upgrade your system and/or dGPU, the 480 being in an 8x slot (or a 16x slot running at 8x speeds) should suffice nicely.

Yeah, I'm just trying to get by for now until I can put together a system that will game in 4k at 144 for a reasonable price and without issues. I did not expect I'd get a used RX 480 4g so, that was an unexpected surprise. I will likely get a new mobo, CPU & RAM and use the RX 480 until the Volta vs Vega price premium dies down a bit. I'm trying not to over-spend if I can wait for reduced prices.
