Hi

I need a balanced notebook for Maya and ZBrush and I can't afford to spend large sums of cash on an high-end models at the moment (being a student with limited funds and all). After carrying out much needed research, I have narrowed it down to a few models. Since reading horror stories regarding HP and the high failure rates, I've decided to take my changes with Toshiba. The Toshiba model I chose below has a powerful GPU for a notebook and acceptable CPU. Given it's price, it seems worth it. I could also opt for a Toshiba model with i3 (330/350) with NVIDIA 310 GPU.

Note: I have included the HP below just in case that particular model turned out to be reliable.

AMD Phenom P820 (1.8GHz), 500GB, 4GB RAM, HD5650 (1024MB of RAM)

Intel Core i5 (2.4GHz), 320GB, 3GB RAM, HD5470 (512MB RAM)

Please bare in mind that the notebook will only be used for simple tasks such as modeling and applying simple effects. Rendering and other processor intensive tasks will be done by a desktop PC. In addition, I prefer to purchase from John Lewis due to the two year warranty.

I could also opt for the Toshiba Satellite C650-15X, but it has Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M.

The AMD has three cores, 1GB more RAM, and the 5650 blows the 5470 away.

Are Maya/ZBrush multi threaded apps? If so, the slower third core would probably be better, but I can't say with certainty of course. That video card and the 1GB RAM will make a difference.

I've opted for the Tosh with HD5650 GPU

Hopefully it will serve me well for the next 3 years
