To avoid typing up an entire post, im going to copy and paste an email to gigabytes tech support I have readily available. Ill be checking back full of distraught to answer anything more specific if need be. Ready and willing to pay a donation via paypal if someone can fix this for me -sigh-

here's my problem/email to gigabyte
Dear CSR,
I have been battling this issue with your motherboard and my memory vs vista for quite some time. Not only is it stopping me from using my pc to its fullest, but robbing me of TONS of time and enjoyment via my hobby.
I can NOT get my pc to boot with 4gb of memory, PERIOD. I am very much against the idea of purchasing new RAM just to be able to get into windows. I bought 4 1gb sticks for a reason. Buying 2 2gb sticks is not an acceptable solution, and the problem has been narrowed down to what I believe is the motherboard bios coupled with the chipset (intel 965)
By now im sure the 4gb memory issue is no secret, however its more of a 4 dimm being occupied issue, as I am led to believe that 2x2gb sticks works just fine. I am currently stuck using only 3 of my 4 sticks, therefore leaving me with only 3gb of memory, which unfortunately, is not what my intentions were for this system, and are quite a limitation in vista 64.
I am going to link a thread, that I have read front to back, as well as tons of others, and tons of posts of my own, countless man hours I would have enjoyed spending doing other things, trying to get Vista to boot with all 4 sticks of my memory installed.
I would like to get some gaming and overclocking done on my system I spent so much money on, but I can do nothing but try over and over day after day trying to sort this boot issue. I have ran memtest, all my sticks are fine. I have tried your bios 7,8,9,10,12,13e,13j. I have moved sticks around in dimms to make sure all dimms were ok. I have messed with voltages and timings. Even underclocked my memory. Overclocked or at default speeds. I get nothing but a blue screen once vista attempts to start. The pc posts and recognizes the memory fine, but Blue screens upon attempting to start vista.
I have formatted a few times and nothing is solving this. Apparently a few folks have had success by emailing their mobo manufacturers and being emailed a bios that addresses the issue which are not yet available to the public. COnsider this my attempt at fixing the isssue that way.
First, here is the thread I have been referring to. To save time from suggesting anything fix wise, that is posted there, consider that I have already tried it if it is there. The hotfix wont install because it is included in SP1 which I have already installed as well.
i look VERY VERY forward to hearing back, and hopefully having the super bios to fix it attached!!
Regards
Kevin

I pretty sure using all 4 memory slots on the GA-965 S3/DS3/DQ6 rev 1.0 boards were a problem. I believe the problem was fixed with latter revisions of those boards.

I have the 965 DS3 rev 3.3 in my sig and have had no issues using all 4 memory slots with Gskill memory. So it looks like Gigabyte worked out the issue with using all the memory slots on later revisions of their boards.

Maybe you could convince Gigabyte to replace your rev 1.0 board will a latter rev of the same board? It's worth a try.

At any rate I hope you get it worked out. I think Gigabyte should be held liable since they did advertised the GA-965 rev 1.0 boards as able to use all 4 slots.

hmm.. i wish that were the case. If it is, the response I got from the third world non english speaking excuse of a tech support guy ought to make you laugh. He sure didnt know about it. Im long past even confering with them, and was just checking old threads hoping someone posted something useful/helpful. I appreciate your response, but so far.. looks like im still stuck with a stick of memory on my desk lookin all shiny and irritating my OCD to no end.

RMA I wouldn't do that yet. Likely what's going on here is the spd chip on the memory only has timings for two sticks. First test all sticks one at a time in each dimm slot to ensure all 4 sticks are good and all 4 dimm slots are good. Then go on to below.

What you want to do is only put two sticks of memory in the same colored slots. Then go into the bios and make sure the memory voltage is set to what the manufacturer recommends. Next go to the memory timing area and whatever the auto detected settings are add one. What this means is if your current memory timings are 5-5-5-18 1t. Set them to 6-6-6-20 2t. Setting command per clock to 2t is really important. Running 4 sticks is going to add more latency and the timings must account for that, and it is not going to be set up automatically.

Oh and I just skimmed over your post so if I missed something sorry.
