I want a decent laptop for a decent price.
No good battery life required, it will be plugged in most of the time.
Integrated webcam/mic would be nice

I do NOT want:
-A portable gaming machine
-Anything AMD
-Anything Compaq or HP
-Any of the newer Toshibas. This includes any Satellite A305, A355, L3XX, and M305. (Toshiba A205 is OK )
-Sony
-Gateway/Acer/E-machines

Dell vostro looks reasonable:

Dell Inspiron 11z's screen is a bit small

So does ASUS UL30A-X3

But the prices are about $100 too high for me :(

Please help.

sorry got to say something you do not want compaq ...understandable but you do not want hp or Toshiba aggg!!! anyway sorry just had to get that out of my system. anyway I have heard some good reviews from Ibuypower and cyberpowers laptops there all customizable and make high power pcs and gaming even though you do not want one.

good luck:)

what is it-
A test station?
Backup server?
Office computer?
NAS device (trust me, I've done this before)?

A personal home-use stationary computer.

Will be used for general office-use and video encoding, expected to last 4+ years (hence the core2duo requirement)

Thanks for the input. Some HPs and Toshibas are fine (like the Toshiba A205) but for the most part most models have significant defects. If anyone can recommend a specific model that is not known for any defects, please recommend.
