Well, I just started playing F.E.A.R, and I get no speech in the game. I get sounds affects, but when someone talks, I cant hear them. Anyone know how to fix this? I have a Logitech Z640 5.1 System on some integrated Realtek 880 audio system. I had speech working fine in the demos also.

Well it works in 2.1 sound mode. Any idea how to get 5.1 sound to work?

UPDATE:
Well it only works in certain parts now. Man this blows, no speech, I guess its time to turn on subtitles :(

update the drivers... or if your using an nvidia mobo get the nvidia drivers... they overwrite the realtek's and seem to be more stable

Yeah when did the SP demo come out? Im going to try those drivers again.

I'm getting the exact same problem, only I have a Creative Audigy Gamer. I've rolled back on those audio drivers with no change also. Hopefully they will release a fix soon.

Well I rolled back and I got good news and bad news. Good news is, that the sounds are decoded properly in 5.1, but the bad news is, still no speech. The only speech I get is at the beginning opening in the conference room and when they jump off the helicopter and when the guy says, "We are on the ground" blah blah. Then I get no speech at all anymore. I hope this is a bug in the game and not a bug in my computer!!!!!

The substitles move off the screen to fast. When they are saying alot, I cant read that fast. Its really driving me NUTS!!!!!!!

It runs a hell alot better than the SP demo did. But it looks like they did something to the sounds now.

I'm pretty sure that this is a bug in the game since our specs are very different.

I've got the opposite where I have speech, but no dolby 5.1 In fact, with this being the only game that i'm not getting 5.1 audio, it's really pissing me off.

READ THE README FILE, LOL.

...it tells you what to do, heh, at least for the people with no speech.

Yeah, I have actually tried all those, to no prevail.

Same here. A8N-SLI using onboard audio. No speech.

I can get 1 or 2 seconds of speech the first time i go in-game and toggle my HW mixer options, but that just goes for a second.

I've done everything the readme and the Sierra KB say to do, but no dice.

Well, not EVERYTHING-- the WFMADist.exe won't run on my XP-64 install.

Anyone know where to get a copy of that for 64?

Well someone on the Sierra forums has found a fix. I have tried it and so far it seems to work fine. It's to do with the wmfadist.exe file that is in the FEAR directory.

1. Do a search for l3codeca.acm in the c:\windows\system32 directory.
2. Rename l3codeca.acm to l3codeca.acm_bak.
3. Reinstall wmfadist.exe, and hopefully it should work.

Thanks for the find, it works now for me!!!!!

damn i shouldnt have given up last night.

I was getting the same issue, when I tried to isntall the dist for the codecs I would get an error installing and registering the ocx for l3... I did some messing around to no avail. never thought of renaming the exisiting one and reinstalling *duh*

will try that when I get home and see what happens

Since the WMFADist.exe refuses to install on xp 64, you need to open it using WinRar and extract l3codeca.acm to your windows/system32 folder. Old file should be renamed to l3codeca.acm_ as stated above. The rest of the archive is not required.

Then turn on the hardware mixing in sound options menu and restart the game. Voices and all sounds will work as expected in 5.1.
