There is no other way to put it, No Man's Sky was a huge flop about two years ago, when it basically over-promised and way under-delivered. However, you have to give it to the Hello Games development team as they have been continually fighting back to get the game to reach the bar that was promised. At launch it has 37K average players online, with a peak of 212K. That soon dwindled to less than 1,000. As of typing this, No Man's Sky had an average of almost 12K players online with a peak of 96K in the last 30 days. One of the big reasons is that now full multiplayer is supported....as previously promised.

Last week, Hello Games patched in their latest update. So if you were one of the ones that bought this title at launch, now might be the time to give it another go. So just maybe it is not continuing to suck as much as we previously thought.
