My thoughts too. Very impressive how they've grown this game but the core gameplay loop is too tedious for me. Even the exploration seems pointless.

Both of these are why I can't stick with it. There aren't any exciting discoveries, just rando generated planets with rando generated creatures that somehow feel the same.
 
Yeah- the exploration is better than most realize. I have found some crazy planets (including one that was devoid of life and atmosphere and listed as {cursed? Haunted? something} and has the weirdest noise. That was way back in the first couple of content updates.

That's what I was going to ask, this update makes the game look more interesting but is the gameplay loop still randomly exploring procedurally generated planets, or is there some semblance of an overarching narrative or a team based PvP element to keep one engaged?
 
There's at least 3 or 4 overarching narratives these days. In my 300+ hours of play I've finished most of em. I haven't finished the storyline involving derelict vessels yet and I believe the sentinel update also added some storyline but I haven't played since then.

It is, however, all involving going to random systems and exploring random planets. But once you unlock all system types the planets do get considerably more varied - at least till you get tired of seeing enough "haunted", "cursed" etc. Planetary bodies.

I definitely find the exotic and lush variants the most interesting. Although my first time actually dealing with a gigantic Sandworm on a planet with a ton of smaller, flying worm creatures was pretty fucking awesome.

You can also relatively easily build a base that generates a ton of money and most necessary resources, which cuts out the grind a fair bit.

I really love what Sean and the NMS team has been doing with the game, especially the last major update that addressed a ton of space combat issues.

What I really want them to do is significantly improve the planet biome generation (multi-biomes please!), improve the water, and add a ton more variety. After awhile you just see the same things over and over in different colors but maybe thats the nature of these type of games.
 
It's incredibly difficult not to shit on Star Citizen when NMS is pushing content and fixes so consistently. This is ignoring the fact that the majority of SC's content is locked behind paywalls (ships/land/whatever).

I played Star Citizen the past couple of days during the limited free experience (I think it's good until May 31) and while it's a technical marval, the fun aspect is really hard to find unless you enjoy the realism. I had to watch an hour of videos just to understand how to leave the planet (finding your ship, turning it on, calling the space port to open the doors, taking off, navigating, using the orbital points, etc) It's also not user friendly in it's current state. The ground combat is ok but the AI is terrible but then again, NMS doesn't have much of a ground combat system either.

That said, I enjoy NMS more because it's a lot more relaxing and far less punishing. I died way too much in SC lol.

IMHO - if you can find a player who is equally willing to make things happen, then yes. It can be amazing for CO-OP. But if you have a friend who has no idea what to do, how to get it, has the attention span of an 8 year old and isn't willing to put in a little effort to know wtf is going on, then no.

For real. I've never played multi but I can imagine that as sluggish as progression can seem -- especially at first -- that combining resources could be a VERY useful thing while exploring the galaxy together.

It winds up you spending your entire time trying to teach your homies what's going on, and then eventually they slope out back to COD or whatever - resulting in a waste of time.
Gotta have equal interests in grinding this game to make it fun.

Yep. Honestly though, that was one of the things that I liked about it initially because it was so unlike most other games in that respect. It didn't hold your hand and just sort of left you to...discover. There was something neat about it. Stumbling across ancient ruins and those alien structures that hum and brr (and often reward!), figuring stuff out on your own, etc. did a great job of making you feel like you were somewhere -completely- foreign but man it can try your patience too. I think I played the game wrong because I had sunk probably 30-40+ hours into my first game (edit: just checked - 37:57) and still had no idea how to farm or do all of the cool automated stuff that you can do with bases. Still nowhere near having enough money for the best ships. Still struggling to find certain things in order to progress. That's brutal! I still enjoyed my time with it because I'd never played anything quite like it and the no loading screens tech is pretty insane, but progression for me was soooo slow and probably due to my own inefficiencies of not knowing how to really play it right. I mean, without a teacher like Eshelmen or going out and reading how-to guides (which kinda feels like cheating but also not when the game gives you so little info) I don't see how most people would really figure most of the game out or see everything that it has to offer.

That's kind of always been the problem, and I've seen a ton of similar comments regarding the new update - lots of cool-looking stuff but no real compelling reason to do any of it. As far as I know, the grindy nature of material collection and lackluster compensation for missions hasn't changed, and as such I haven't gone back to the game in a long time. Awhile back I actually had a mod that gave missions 10x rewards and sold items 10x more value, and even at that point it was just becoming tolerable. It also has the RNG aspect of being able to find the upgrades you want/need at any given station, or being able to get a better multi-tool or ship which is also RNG. Then you cry when you can't afford it anyway.

I forget that one update and haven't played in some time - but I do recall they added HQ hub ship with players all around signing up for missions, gear upgrades and so forth. I thought that was kind of neat in order to get things going for players. From what I recall though, this wasn't a starting point for players, it was a place to get to. In order to do that as a new player, you still need to build up and get off your planet, etc. which I know isn't a handful of hours any more, but it can still be tedious JUST to get to that MP hub for a new player. Assuming they know it's even there.

Maybe they changed that - but regardless

I started a new game today for the first time since the game launched. Had no idea about this HQ Hub Ship until about 8 hours into the game. Its cool they put a ton of new features and content into the game, but as others have said - whats the point to all of it? Probably not playing more of this game tbh, definitely got my moneys worth with 120 hours played.
 
For those starting or restarting the game, Twitch is going to have drops from Thursday thru Monday next week I think. You have to link your twitch account to steam and their nms website but usually you get a free A class ship each day for "watching" a twitch streamer playing the game.

Not sure if they changed it, I think you still need a freighter but they changed a lot for freighters. Teleporters are not just one way now, act the same as a planet base. For the twitch drops, the ships are retreivable at the hub, not far from where you land and near the nexus missions thing.

So a buddy and I play Rust and very much enjoy it. And honestly, not really into PvP aspect of it. If I wanted a shooter I would play something else. Would this be a good game us?

I haven't played rust so I'm not sure how it compares.

This is a great game to just explore and relax. Build, farm, harvest, and at your own pace.

You CAN have space battles, or fight robots and other humans but unless you specifically go to the nexus and join others you can play for weeks without bumping into a live person.

It honestly depends on what you're looking for. This might be it, it might not be.

You can summon ships provided they have launch fuel but it's not obvious that you can, you have to wade a couple layers into the so called quick menu.
 
I played this game at launch. Completed it, 100% achievements, and haven't touched it since outside of logging in for a few minutes to see what an update did. Since it has VR support, I bought it on Steam and will give it another go at some point. It looks like an entirely different game now.

It has similarities to Rust PvE I suppose. Most of the co-op would be now taking on various missions (killing things, piracy, explore abandoned freighters in space) thru the Anomaly/Nexus hub that takes a few hours to get to. But in a fresh MP session you would start on the same planet, usually not too far from your friends.

Both us tried to grind through the intro and get a base down last night. I finally got a 1x1 base down and a teleporter built, but did not get to power yet. Pretty grindy stuff. Finally figured out there is a first person view. That 3rd person stuff drives me nuts.

No kidding. Starting out is quite the slog. Learning how to use the menu system alone is a punch in the face. Not exactly the most intuitive I have seen, but figuring that out.

Crazy thing is, it's better now than it's ever been. Hello Games has made huge improvements to reduce the grindiness and improve user QoL. So big props to the OGs who bought this upon release and played that version. I jumped in at the 1-year anniversary when it went on sale and the game is significantly better now than it was then if you can believe it.

Yeah, every time I come back to the game I invariably spend a few minutes trying to remember how to swap back to first person view. 3rd person is best for when in vehicles. The building menu used to be based on that console x menu or whatever instead of the Z menu popping up a screen to pick blocks/items to craft.

I was told you can hotkey the 3rd to 1st. Need to figure out the binds.
