Verified that the drivers are installed (reinstalled). They (the NIC connections) no longer show up in the Network Connections. They were there.

Could a registry value have been altered? If so, where should I look?

Would like to get this resolved in a timely fashion, but I am stumped.

This happened while running a security lockdown script (created by our security officer) remotely.

I had the same problem after applying a security patch on XP.
It turns out that permissions on network objects were changed so that I didnt have permission to view them as an Administrator and the Admin account couldnt either.
Microsoft patched the patch :)
I suspect a similar issue caused by that patch you applied.

Given that the script seems to have changed settings on your local PC rather than through a network group policy at logon, I imagine they are reversible.
However you will no doubt be violating company policy and could risk your job if you do.
