I am not one to curse much but I can not understand how a violent FPS like Cod4 could have so many prudes.. We are blowing each others brains all over the walls so there is no denying the game is very violent but you cant say F*&k ? Ok, death and violence is fine but foul language is just over the line ? Where the F*&k is the logic ? Ok, people will say " kids play on here !" Ok, so its ok for kids to blow up each other but cursing is out ? Isnt this a little backwards ?

Sigh !!

If you make your own server you can make the rules however you want.

People are too sensitive these days. I agree with the OP, there are guns, violence, shanks, racial fighting, and explosions, but someone can't swear? It seems like people just ignore the rating of the game, right where it says the experience may change during online play. If you can't handle swearing, then you should be playing Super 3D Noah's Ark

I also agree with arr4ws, where the constant strings and the constant "That guy hacks, OMFG what a haxor" is a bit much.

I used to run many old CS and TFC servers back in the day, and a I applied a no cursing rule. Its not that I hate cursing, but some people do find it offensive and no cursing has a tendency to keep the crying and whining and sniveling and general douche-baggery somewhat limited.

If people found the game offensive, they wouldn't play.

I agree 100% with the op. The game is "M" rated. You can blow someone's head off, but can't omit a curse word, or something that even resembles one. Methinks it's just people looking for something to bitch about.
If the person is being ridiculous and offensive, boot them, that's fine.. but there's no reason to be retarded about cursing.
It's the same for every game though. BF2, cod2, source, you name it.

Know what it comes down to?

violence in COD4 is fake. swearing is real, you cant fake it.. I'll elaborate.

Most people who play violent video games are not phased by it. People know its fake, and its just fun. Now certain swear words just offend people because of the way their grew up and/or their lifestyle. You can't fake a swear word, the way the sound of it gets translated by your brain just offends people.

I swear like a sailor when I play video games, but I never do when elderly people are present because most of them get offended by it.

Now on the other hand if people are not phased by brutal REAL violence but offended by swearing, now that's screwed up.

i don't mind non-swearing servers but i think some server admins use this as a tool to prove their self perceived e-authority. case in point, i was on a server and talking with one of the server clan members (who i later discovered was an admin). it went something like this:

me - "great server you run here. i've been on a lot of servers lately filled with assholes"
him - "thx"
him (10 sec later) - "LANGUAGE"
me - "my bad, slip up. i understand the server rules."
*i get kicked, then rejoin*
me - "just a slip up, no need to kick me. i even apologized"
him - "you're lucky you didn't get banned. that was your warning."

i immediately disconnected and found a new server. i understand rules to keep the malicious players in check, but sometimes people let their hard set rules override common sense. ridiculous.

for some reason saying 'fuck' on servers can get me in trouble, but usually i can call people ♥♥♥♥s all day and no one cares. to me, ♥♥♥♥ is the harshest swear word I know :p

edit: The C-word I mean

If you don't like the server rules, find another server.

If I ran a server, I'd have a "no cursing" rule as well. When you let adrenaline-filled teenagers curse without reservation, you have a ridiculous situation on hand.

Those rules are there for a reason. They're not to "protect kids" or anything. They're there to keep unruly aggressive kids from filling up the chat box with curse words, which they invariably do on servers that allow cursing.

It's distracting, annoying, and pointless.

I would agree with this. I am looking at starting a server for my clan, and can't help but think how many people leave servers because of the swearing or the accusations of hacking. I'm tired of it, and it dates back to 2142 and the servers just filled with people accusing others of hacking because they got killed and don't feel they should have been. By controlling the swearing and stuff, I think you create a more enjoyable atmosphere for gaming.

Now last week on Opie and Anthony, they were talking about some guy who went on Dr. Phil because people call him names on Xbox Live, and he felt MS owed him protection against that since he bought the 360 and the service. Now thats ignorant, and no one is stopping you from blocking those people, leaving the server, or not playing that game.

Most people who play violent video games are not phased by it.

I know a certain Jack Thompson that would disagree with that. LOL :D But honestly, I understand what you mean. Because I play GTA, I'm not going to run someone over, take down a mafia, and get a hooker to end the day on a high note.

Hahaha, it's the most power that grandma's attic avenger is going to get. Might as well abuse it.

I would have just found another server after getting kicked. Or if I had a few beers in me, I'd go back in, drop an F-bomb, then leave.

As said before, no cursing rule helps keep the chat log and voice channel clear for important gameplay communication.

If you are cursing, it probably means you died and we already know about it anyway via the killboard lol.

I've played CS for a long time and it seemed like every sever I bumped into had a no swearing rule. I complained about it and got on my soap box and stated my reasons but in the end, it was either deal with it or leave. I actually don't care anymore. I actually seem to have more fun in those servers because it seems like there is more control over everyone and no one is being annoying. Sometimes I'll drop a swear word here and there but then I'll instantly correct myself and apologize. They just slip out sometimes as long as you let them know ahead of time they can be leanint (ok spelling is waaaay off there) about it.

Years ago, I got kicked from a server one time because for a while I was using my last name as my screen name. My last name is High and they kicked me because they thought my name had something to do with drugs. I tried explaining it to them but they kicked me anyways. Tried coming back on and tried explaining it again and they kicked me again. I got back on one more time and dropped a few F-bombs, C-Bombs, and N-bombs and left. I've been banned ever since.

Yeah! Just like that drinking age

Here are my thoughts: You shoot a guy in the face, but you cant swear. You can buy a house, smoke and die in the military, but you cant drink...lame!

good example of what i mentioned in my post above...stupid server admins

...N-bombs and left. I've been banned ever since.

why do people need to resort to this?

edit: toned it down a little.

Is there a reason why you need to swear on a server? Is it an e-cool thing? Does having a "no curse" rule really affect your play?

I really don't see it as a big deal and can understand that words will slip through so having true no cursing is tough on the internet.

The example above from Porter was from a righteous admin and not due to cursing or rules imo.

Yes, when it impedes on your regular speech pattern, it's just a pita. The better question, is, is there a need to impose such pointless rules?

A friend of mine, for instance, always gets pissed when I say the word 'retarded'. She's majoring to be a special ed teacher. Whenever I go to visit her, I always say it at least once, accidentally of course, and can always tell when I've done so by the glare I get. I can always tell instantly by the look on her face.

The point is, if it's not hurting someone, who cares.

Agreeing, though the server sanctimony extends beyond the ridiculous and asinine approach to swearing. Servers with "NO GRENADE LAUNCHERS OR KICK THEY'RE NOT REALLY MEANT TO BE IN THE GAME" rules are stupid. Personally, I don't like getting shot by people jumping around spraying like they've one too many chromosomes, but i'd never kick people just because I dislike being killed that way.

I'd love to meet some of these muppets so I can explain to them how deficient they are as human beings.

NO SWEARIN NO GRENADES DNT USE BULLETS OR KICK ! ! ! !! ! ! ! !!!

I'm pretty sure they have those rules in there just to apply to excessive swearing. I don't mind it at all. Yes, we all have a foul mouth at times, but, when we're fragging one another it's so much better not hearing all of the letter-bomb's I died. That can get old quick. I'm not condoning swearing nor am I saying it's completely wrong, I'm just saying......OH BOB SAGET!!!!! (Courtesy of Danny The Tourettes Guy R.I.P.)

On more than one occasion while playing Wolfenstein Enemy Territory I've had some bible basher get pissed off and banning me for saying "christ". Some people really need to have a word with themselves. It's OK to play a violently over the top game set in WW2 but it's not alright to offend God... OK then...

I haven't played on the XBox online or anything, so I don't know if you need to press a button or something to turn it on and off, but on the PC in basically every game you need to hold a button down while you talk so everyone only hears you when you want to be heard. I don't understand why it's so difficult to NOT swear when you can die and swear your ass off and then use the voice chat and say "nice shot", heh.

I can take hearing swearing, but if it's constant f-bombs, you're not just swearing, you're being obnoxious and I don't need to hear your bitch that you died. Shut up and play and maybe you won't be so distracted by dying that you have the need to habitually swear :D

Oh yeah, and won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?!?

hi,

The one server I play on has the no swearing policy. The main thing is to keep the language to a minimum. Yes we do have children who play on there. Their parents play in the server as well. They were the ones to introduce the children into playing the game in the first place. However I see the rule being effective cause they do not need to see or hear the F bomb dropped every two seconds but actually since it is more or less older adults, they do not want to see or hear it too. We get alot of compliments about the server. Many of the players that play in our server like the fact the language is clean and we keep an eye on the server itself.

There are 15,000 plus servers now in COD4. If you do not like one server's rules, find another or start your own. However I will say I don't care for the bible thumper servers. I come across those every so often. Just saying jesus christ gets you kicked. I just do a cartoon cursing when I get pissed at someone.

Later,
shaggy

PC or Xbox, and which server is it? I have a tough time sometimes finding a decent server down here in Mexico. I only have a 1mbit connection, and it's once I get into a game, but for some reason when pinging servers I can't seem to find one under 300, even though when I connect it's usually under 100.

I've played my fair share of online games and for me, I PREFER the "no offensive language" rulings. I cant tell you how many times i'd join a game just to hear johnny retard yelling out each and every explative he learned on the playground that day. Or the kids that log on just so they can scream (and i dont even know if i can point in its direction here) "Ni***r!" at every person that shoots at them.

There's only so much that the mute control can do when you're in a team based game. Not to mention none of us want to hear them and their 12 year old maturity screaming in our ears. If you want to scream out idiocies, dont hold the voice com button.

If a ban on swearing " impedes your regular speach pattern" then you probably swear a lot more than you should anyway. The reasons for these rules has been stated repeatedly in this thread and go beyond just "potecting the children". In many cases it really does make for a better overall experience, because it cuts back a lot on the e-thugs.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here with that anecdote. The point of your story is "if it's not hurting someone, who cares."??? If so, I don't see how you managed to get from one to the other, since that really wasn't illustrated in the story.

I actually play on a server where the admin motd always reads:

We encourage swearing.

Don't bitch about particular weapons, or campers. Just find the person camping and stab them for supreme humiliation.

Pretty sweet. Wish it was hard core though, I almost can't stand ferry mode in COD4 anymore.

I actually enjoy the no swearing servers as well. Sometimes I will disable voice, but I prefer to leave it on to hear others. I've been in several TF2 servers and it's just constant racial slurs/cursing and have left and found another server. It's no big deal to me and I leave.

Yesterday took the cake though, I was playing TF2, got called a clanfag for having a [H] tag and was banned. I think the main problem though was the guy who requested the ban got tired of eating rockets. I need to find a good server.

Clanfag? I don't even understand... they didn't like you were in a clan, so they booted you? Or you play with a clan, got good, and whooped them, which = ban? lol I understand you're not even really in a clan, but I mean.... wow. It's hilarious how people are willing to be the biggest dicks in the world in online games just because they're protected by being anonymous. Pricks.

i agree with the op. if someone has an issue with an s or f bomb while they are virtually killing people they need help. that just goes to illustrate how ass backwards our society is. verbally abusing people is another story... swearing or no swearing.

I don't mind no cursing either, because I barely talk when I'm fragging anyway. If something is directed at me I will respond, or the occassional "nice" or "lol", but I don't get on a server to have an irc conversation or spam binds.

The ones that get me are the ones that are overly sensitive about things like the fact that my name has "God" in it. I've been kick/banned from two servers already just because of my name. They wanted me to change the name I have been using for 15 years now, and I would not do it.

So stay away from Snake and Snot's House of Fun [HOF] server if you don't like this kind of ridiculous stuff.

Luckily there are tons of other servers out there to play on, but it's annoying that a well behaved mature player has to deal with this kind of crap just trying to relax getting some fragging going in an M rated game.

I played Quake from day one through Quake 4 and have NEVER had a problem with this type of thing. The community in COD and apparently other similar games leaves a lot to be desired sometimes compared to a mature one like Quake.

But I think that's what usually happens.... maybe I haven't played enough, but usually if someones swearing, they're directing at somebody. Someone dies, calls the other one... what have you. Nobody likes to be called a mofo, so the rules are there for that reason.
