Nintendo President Says Switch Successor, Price Cut Not Currently Being Considered

Analysts were convinced Nintendo was preparing a new Switch console for release this year, but their assumption was wrong: in a recent interview with The Sankei News, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed his company didn’t have any plans at all for a successor "at this time." He also confirmed the console wouldn’t be getting a price cut. Neither is surprising, as the Switch has been selling extremely well.

Furukawa commented on a few different topics, including Switch’s success towards the end of 2018. He also weighed in – yet again – on looking to sell 20 million units by the end of the fiscal year, and it’s here that something interesting was said. According to Furukawa, Nintendo is trying to focus on selling Switch and is "not considering a successor or a price cut at this time." Given the system’s success, perhaps that isn’t an overly surprising statement.
 
Sad on the no successor.
I hope for a 3ds 2 and a switch 2.
Hopefully they will make the switch 2 so you can buy it sans joycons for cheaper.
 
They will lie and say that right up until they're ready to announce. The second they do, there will be people that will stop buying games for the current console. It's just good business sense unfortunately.

I honestly can't see them increasing memory or swapping out a faster processor. If anything, I see them making a smaller, less power hungry version of the Switch and then completely discontinue the 3DS.
 
I could see nintendo doing like a switch 'pro' which is using the same Tegra x1 but clocked a bit faster, on a smaller 7nm process for less energy consumption. Maybe with larger base storage capacity or something.
 
How about a cheaper switch without a screen and battery for those who want a dedicated console?
 
They'll probably do a die shrink eventually so they can provide mobile 1080p resolution and/or extended batter life at 720p not to mention better performance/image quality at 1080p resolution while docked since they could bump up clock speeds when plugged in as well. For now though it's clear Nintendo doesn't have enough incentive to do it because sales are already plentiful enough.
 
No price cuts? That's ok, that's ok, I got emulation.

This is Nintendo so I doubt it, but I really hope when they do it is just a hardware upgrade and less of a "brand new experience" system.

My Wii U is inconsolable.

Also about to buy a second Switch cause I keep hogging my wife's and there ain't no fury like a lady who's video game system has low battery life when picked up.

Oh yeah, for sure it should be a refresh, not a redo.
 
That's unfortunate, they really need a more powerful version. The switch is cool and all, it's just badly out of date hardware wise. It should have come out years before it did. That is my primary contention with it's price. At this isn't it really shouldn't be more than $199.

Sure, you could rely on emulation, but the reality is that you still need a pretty serious gaming PC to run it properly. Further to that, it'll take at least a few years for the emulators to catch up to the Switch and by that time there will have almost definitely have been a price drop and possibly a refresh.
 
There obviously will be some sort of successor, but if they announced them now it would tank sales. A lot of people would be like “I’ll just wait the next one comes soon” it may be 2+ years out but they don’t know that.
 
They'll probably use nvidia again for their next device. We'll get a good idea of it's power when their next ARM chip is shown off, assuming nintendo don't go for some custom silicon next time around.
 
Of course there won't be a Switch successor anytime soon. You'd have to be brain dead to think they'd make a new platform so soon. A Switch revision is likely though. I expect something similar to a 3DS XL / New 3DS / PS4 Pro.
 
He didnt say there wont be an updated version of the switch. Which is what rational people are expecting.

Ps4 pro, xbox one x, switch 2.0 etc.. all great moves. Backwards compatibility is a major flaw of consoles they seem to be finally addressing.

They release these huge budget exclusives that nobody can play 48 months later. Without pulling a system out of a dirty box in the garage.

Imagine if your new 4k player wasnt compatible with your whole blu ray or DVD library. Let's rewatch that 8 year old movie, oops gotta dig out the 3 systems back DVD player! Hope it's still works.

Can you imagine how bad that would ruin movies? Classics and their profound influence on new movies would be memoryholed.

In general on the home console front at least this won't be as much of an issue going forward. The days of proprietary CPUs are gone thankfully. That is the reason why porting PS3 only games to PS4 is such a pain and pretty much not done unless it is a paid remaster largely rebuilt. Going forward it should be easier to make a PS4 game run on a PS5.
 
Switch is running Tegra X1 at 20nm so in about a year you'll most likely see a new Tegra running 12nm or even 7nm if it's worth it for Nvidia.
Either way Nintendo will never be up to date hardware wise compared to the other consoles.
 
Just saw a jbhifi ad on tv for the switch is something like $50 off and is now sub $400. I though eh, might be a new one in the works. lol. So no price cuts my arse, which leads me to believe no successor in the works my arse.
 
Yeah, I highly doubt they'd launch a 'successor' anytime soon. However, an updated version of their current system - damn straight I'm expecting one. All of their consoles had revisions made (especially their handheld systems) and I'm expecting that to continue.

I don't expect anything drastic, but quality of life fixes (built-in stand stability, dock scratching, etc).

Works good so far. I'm waiting for the Vulkan api before I give it a spin cause I use AMD graphics and Citra and Yuzu do not like AMD graphic cards. I already played Breath of the Wild from start to finish on CEMU on my PC with no issues.

There are two sides to the argument. On the one hand, emulation has saved a lot of games that would have otherwise been lost to time. Pretty sure most NES and SNES games would be relegated to childhood memories if not for emulation.

One the other hand, it's still theft.

Nintendo tends to be a little hit and miss with generations. Cube was o.k. but n64 was going strong to begin with. Wii U had some moments but then Switch took it to the next level. Whatever's next for them will likely be a step in between again. Better for them to wait it out anyway since Sony and MS are about to trade blows again.
 
Yeah poor Nintendo god forbid they do something bold for a change instead of resting on their laurels selling behind the 8-ball hardware that therefore is rather trivial to emulate. Perhaps they could listen to consumers and you know branch out to PC and make console games for console hardware that doesn't feel a decade old in terms of performance the day it's released.

If you think Nintendo's profits are being affected in any measurable way by the limited amount of emulation happening on switch and wiiu i have a bridge to sell you.

The Switch has sold over 10 million units in the US alone in under two years. Its about to surpass the PS4's lifetime sales in Japan. It had the best December in North America of ANY console in over a decade. Smash was the fastest selling December US launch EVER, without even counting its digital sales. Pretty sure they gave consumers something that consumers want. A company not bending to your every whim does not mean they aren't delivering something consumers want.

I didn't say I was actively pirating or even justifying it at all. I just think it would be incredibly difficult to measure any kind of real impact to their bottom line as a result of people running switch/wiiu emulators.

I don't pirate games anymore, haven't since some time in college(2008 or so)...steam made it easier and faster to pay for and get games so piracy lost its luster there. I think emulators are neat in the amount of reverse engineering that has to be done to get it working, but thats about it. I do also like the "archivist" part of rom/emulation.

Port the games to PC already otherwise I'll leech. I'm not buying a console to play a game on inferior hardware. Emulation takes a lot more power than the actual hardware you're trying to emulate and most emulators today run on a single core on my 8 core Ryzen CPU due to the lack of proper multicore code, including the Switch emulator. Should tell you something about these game consoles we're forced to buy to play the games.

They do it cause they can and they will not because they're losing money. They'd make more money if they ported their games to PC and sold them for $30. Better any sale than no sales, but Nintendo wants that walled garden.

If Nintendo is making a new faster Switch it's because the Switch is compromised and piracy runs rampant. You think Switch emulation is the only form of piracy? Why you think Nintendo is selling so many Switches? Hacking them for free games is super easy.
