Nintendo NX May Be Revealed Next Week, Price Is “Major Disappointment”

I get the nagging feeling that Nintendo is, once again, releasing a console that can’t keep up with the competition in terms of graphics performance, so I can see where a $300/$350 asking price would be disappointing. So, once again, the console’s success is going to hinge on whatever gimmick they cooked up this time around.

A long-in-the-works revamp to the company's consoles -- the NX, with reveal coming next week -- is liable to come at a price that will result in a "major" disappointment for volume sales, the firm says. Speculation is putting the price of the new console between $300 and $350, in line with competing consoles, vs. the Wii's former discount to rival boxes from Sony and Microsoft.
 
I am thinking it will be another bad nintendo system. Honestly they have had issues since the GameCube days and have not moved forward in any really noticed fashion since.

Don't get me wrong. Love the games. It's just the systems. . . I do like playing my gc and wii games on my pc with an emulator though. (Leaglly bought games getting that out of the way) f zero at 4k is amazing at 60hz.
 
IIRC the Wii was far more successful than XB or PS3.

The Wii U was a disaster of course.
 
While Nintendo is sitting on a huge pile of cash, the reality is that one more flop and they could find themselves being destined into what Sega is doing. That really is not a bad thing as I would LOVE to have Nintendo games for my Xbox.
 
well, if the rumors are to be believed, it will be an nvidia tegra based SoC, portable tablet-like device w/ a docking station for tv use.. Anything with a good-sized decent screen and a powerful mobile SOC wasn't going to be mass market cheap.
 
So, people who watch Nintendo, if the NX is gonna release in March and have February demo units, when should the Product reveal/launch happen?
 
if this thing does 1080p 60fps I'll be shocked. At least it won't be so woefully behind like the wii U is..
Actually I think it will be similar in design to the wii u. If anyone watched the new Zelda game demo, there were some specific areas that required the use of that wii u pad. And since the game will be both on the wii u and NX, I'm inclined to believe they won't redesign the game in a different way for the NX.
So it'll probably have one of those massive controller/tablet/pad things again

I mean we have to talk about reality here. Nintendo hasn't released a "Good" console since the 64. Certainly there have been varying degrees of financially successful consoles, but none of them have been good.

The game cube was decent, however just about anyone knows if it were not for really good games that came much later in its life cycle its sales were pretty bad and it wasn't well received.

The Wii sold numbers because it was cheap and it had a gimmick that appealed to a previously untouched demographic. However the console itself was terrible. It had tons of problems and really hurt in the game titles department. Had Nintendo tried to launch it at the same price point of its competition at the time it would have failed. It was further helped by that also being hands down one of the most expensive console generations in quite some time.

The Wii U was an over priced wii with an even worse gimmick. It failed for really painfully obvious reasons.

If the NX rumors end up true on both price and what the gimmick for it is, It will probably crash and burn harder than the Wii U.

Nintendo continues to produce really good games. They just can't make a non hand held gaming device that isn't a gimmicky piece of shit.

The Wii U failed due to terrible marketing and 3rd parties jumping ship due to poor sales. The name of the system was confusing for a lot of non-gamers and the marketing for it was absolute trash. It would have sold a lot better if those two things weren't a factor. The gamepad was pretty much a non-factor one way or the other, besides the fact that people thought the Wii U was just the gamepad and it was an accessory for the Wii.

By the way, the Gamecube was a great console as is the Wii U. Nintendo's bad decisions on both consoles don't stop them from being good. Sales are also fairly irrelevant in that determination as well.

The Wii U failed for the following 3 reasons; 1 It was horribly over priced for its specs, 2) It had a gimmicky controller that no one wanted and inflated that price 3) It was absolutely under powered.

Marketing hurt it certainly, but no amount of marketing could of made up for those 3 factors. Sorry to say but the controller played a massive part in the failure of the Wii U. It doubled the price of the console and offered absolutely nothing in terms of added value to most games for a very long time. Sorry you could of made your argument some years ago while they were still trying to right that sinking ship. Unfortunately the writing got put on the wall for why it failed long ago.
 
$300 - $350 for a console from the only company still offering good games for consoles is fine with me.

The Wii U failed because when gamers claim to believe that gameplay matters more than graphics, they are lying. The first party games are excellent, as per usual from a Nintendo product, but third parties couldn't easily shovel their AAA games onto the platform and so abandoned it in the face of rising development costs.

Naw dude, the marketing failed too. People did think it was an accessory or extra screen for the Wii. I don't think a lot of typical Nintendo buyers are aware of or concerned with specs. The Wii was pretty much a potato for hardware specs and still sold.

If sales had been better it would have been much less of a problem. But with sales so abysmal and, as you said, with development costs rising most 3rd parties simply didn't want to take the risk. Which still goes back to Nintendo's abysmal marketing of the system as with better marketing the initial rush of sales over the first few months of the system could have been a lot better. They even did a terrible job of marketing it towards kids, which is usually a fairly big audience for them.

Because when you're paying as much for one hardware platform compared to others, it had better be able to compete in terms of performance. The fact is that the Wii U couldn't and still cost $300. Wait, scratch that. It actually cost $325+ because you had to buy the pro controller unless you wanted to be stuck using the horrendous tablet with terrible battery life. Wait, you bought the pro controller which is actually decent and the game you want to play has randomly decided that you need to use the tablet anyway for one specific feature? Time to juggle controllers then I guess.

I have a Wii U. Haven't played the thing in ages. Why? Because when I was finding fun games to play, I'd randomly find myself having to get up and grab the stupid tablet that I never wanted, to blow into a mic in a mario game or something. At the same time, I didn't pay full price for the system, and never would have if that were my only option since it would mean paying $300+ for a system that can't even play all of the games that are otherwise cross platform due to the Wii U's hardware limitations. Combine all of that with the fact that Nintendo's online network is still an absolute joke, and of course the Wii U would flop.

Hell, the only reason the Wii did so well was because the PS3 launched at $600 and even the 360 was what, $350 with the Wii costing half as much.

Most importantly, the gimmick cost little more than any console controller and the gimmick worked.

Have fun playing your multiplats on Scorpio and Neo, dudebros. I'll be having fun rockin the NX + high end PC gaming setup just as I do the Wii U + PC right now. Best of both worlds

Little dose of truth to folks who still think the masses all are happy with a console that ONLY plays nintendo 1st party games. Seriously right? Those games are getting old to a lot of folks.

NEWSFLASH: Nintendo is incapable of making decisions to save itself.

Their re-try in this console generation doesn't make it to XBONE levels of performance, yet the XBONE and PS4 are both getting a performance boost in their PS4 Pro and Scorpio. I think nVidia gave them a deal they couldn't refuse, then decided to build the console around it. It will hurt both brands. Nintendo needs to hire someone from outside of Nintendo to take over on product design. Nobody denies that their first party titles are good.

huh? 360 had gameplay.. even at launch it had quite a few games.. which was one of the reasons xbox beat ps3 for a while. The wii sold on a gimmick to a lot of people initially because it was "active" and cheaper. 50 to 150 bucks cheaper than xbox and 250 cheaper than ps3. Plus with downturn economy lot of people didn't want to spend extra.
 
Nintendo's problem is they're always late to the game. The Wii U didn't offer any improvements over the PS3 and 360, and now this NX won't add anything over the PS4 and XB1.

If you're going to release something a couple of years after every one else then knock peoples' socks off. To do that you'd have to come out with a true 4k system and get 3rd party support. All we see from them right now is another "me too" system with the only thing keeping them afloat is Mario or Zelda.

This seems backwards to me. Why would I buy a Nintendo console with the expectation of primarily playing ports of 3rd party games? I already have a PC. I can get the best versions of crossplatform games already.

This isn't the SNES era anymore. The PC is the gaming platform to rule them all. Nintendo's current console of the day is the best possible sidekick. Honorable mention: their portables, which are absolutely loaded with games better than anything on iOS or Android.
 
I've owned a Wii U since launch. What killed it for me was the 30mb/s transfer rate hard drive.
Purposely limited so that "DISC-gamers" wouldn't be at a disadvantage.... *facepalm*

Yeah you could connect USB...2.0...

But 9/10 of the people i knew, literally did NOT understand that the Wii U is essentially the Wii 2.
Wow Nintendo dropped the ball there.

Back on topic, if the rumors are true. This thing will sell like hotcakes... IF AND ONLY IF
they advertise it like it should.

Promote the CRAP out of this thing like it is their next handheld. (Assuming rumors are true)
Make it sound like the Nintendo DSXL on frigging cocaine, which it basically would be.

Promote NES nostalgia by emphasizing the cartridge aspect of it. And then in the official
Trailer Reveal, towards the end, they should then show that it can be connected to the TV
wirelessly. (Think WiiU Pad in reverse)

However, if this thing isn't as powerful as the XBOX One, minimum, there is a good chance
it will flop.

heh. its not backwards. the one thing we always forget, every one is not me/us. While owning more than one gaming platform is more common, still lots of people don't. owning pc or xbox or playstation as primary with wii u as secondary is best. there is a lot of people out there that will only buy one console per generation.

I understand that. It does not make the Wii U less of a quality console, however. It simply puts it into its own category.
 
Looking forward to seeing some actual information about this unit - I fell hard for that fake controller mockup.

As for price, I was hoping for a an aggressive $249 sweet spot.
 
Nintendo NX Handheld To Use Nvidia Tegra-Based SoC?
Semiaccurate reported in May 2016 that Nvidia had won NX design.

I asked SuperMetalDave64 why he disagrees with my NX rumors.

Not interested in the NX (to buy) but if Nintendo is revealing the NX this week, and if AMD did win it, their quarterly financials will be reported on Thursday and so far.....only 2/3 of AMD's design wins have been revealed, the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio. That might boost the stock, or if AMD's Polaris isn't the biggest boon this year, that should take some of the sting.

Unless Sony and Microsoft are moving into high tail for the next 3-4-5 years of consoles, I think it might actually be more of an even chance AMD got the NX.

That's not a fair assumption in the slightest. Just look at Zombi U and then they ported it to other consoles as well and worked just as good. That game HEAVILY made use of the gamepad. All reports indicate that the NX will be a portable/home hybrid. Like a console you can take with you and play on the go, and then when you are home you plug it into your tv and/or base station and play it with a controller. But who knows; it's all hearsay and rumor which I don't take at face value.
 
Of course, I forgot about the PS4 Slim. Which would be disappointing. Or maybe Apple was the 3rd win. Of course more recent rumors are pointing to Nvidia taking that as well. Hmm, at least this week will be interesting.

When people say that gameplay trumps graphics, that doesn't mean gameplay trumps graphics in every scenario or that people don't care about graphics.

What it means is, if a particular game plays better than it looks, it can still be good. But if I'm going to be paying as much as the competing systems which have games that will never get ported to the Wii U because it's so underpowered, why buy it? A super mario game might not require tons of hardware, but if there are only 4 or 5 total games on the system then so what? I'm not going to pay full price for a console for only a handful of games, no matter how good they look or play.
