I guess I'm old school, but I'm just amazed at the audience some of these Twitch streamers have accumulated. The latest big number is 10M for streamer Ninja. He announced this milestone yesterday on Twitter. Are you guys contributing to his numbers? I don't watch streams but I like going to YouTube and watching game strategy videos. I just can't sit down and watch streamers because my ADHD kicks in and I stray to something else. Anyway, congrats to Ninja for his big milestone. I wonder what kind of dollar figures he's bringing in from all of those followers?

Ninja has become the first Twitch streamer to reach 10 million followers (10,004,423 at the time of this article, to be precise). This news of Ninja's milestone accomplishment is reported to us by Ninja, who is in a prime position to know.

I'm not but I heard he was good at Fortnite? I had no idea who he was until [H] posted about him.

I just don't get it. Tutorials, walk through or strategy guides I get.... Just wanting to watch somebody play a game, when you could be playing yourself, I don't get.

There is a difference between followers and subscribers. He gets paid via subscribers. Followers only get notified when he goes online.

I hear Japan is having a Ninja shortage, maybe he should apply?

I enjoy some of the streamers' Dr. DisRespect comes to mind who puts in a lot of production value into his streams and its way more than just playing some of the games of the moment. It's schlocky, but more entertaining than most things on tv these days.

Same goes for pretty much any sport in my book. Most are super boring to watch.

As far as I know, a lot of the known twitch streamers are able to give away items for the games they are playing and that is most likely a big reason why they have so many followers IMO.

I agree. On twitch I'm a fan of Snow Sos. I like being able to interact with the streams, and collaborate on issues

NBA players making $22 million a year love Fortnite, it must be pretty fun or addictive.

He most likely will blow all that money he's making most and end up an addict years down the road when he's not popular anymore. Too much fame and money too fast!

TWITCH is like Facebook for the under-18 crowd. You can hang out with friends, chat with strangers all while interacting with someone who's internet-famous and the people who like them.......watching them play a game you play, makes you feel part of the group. Fucking Socialism.

As others have said same goes for pretty much any other sport entertainment. I assume you also don't get why people watch sports?

While I'm not a fan of watching solo streamers I do understand the appeal, I watch live streams of EVO and AGDQ/SGDQ.

There's a pretty big difference between a competitive sport like football or baseball being played fiercely by the best athletes in the world and some 115 pound dude in his mom's basement playing what is basically a kids game.....especially considering you could just play the game yourself.

I guess that's why I don't get it, what's the fun of watching someone do something you could be doing? It's like your kid not wanting to play with the toy truck you bought him but he'll watch some YouTube streamer play with one for hours. Playing in the NFL or NBA is an elite level skill few people in the world possess. Anybody can play Fortnite and get good at it.

I'm not saying I'm right. There are lots of things I don't get that people love by the millions. I'm probably the least hip dude on the planet....is "hip" even a word anymore?

I personally don't watch sports except when I crash a PARTY.

The watching sports makes more sense to me if you can't play well or want to feel the crowd energy, plenty of pack behavior studies to back participation.

However if its not an e-sports event and its just some random (anyone not in ranked comp) I don't understand the allure either.

I will just load up a game at random from my library and play it for a week or 2.

Listenung to some of these streamers and their tantrums really annoys me. I actually got a person wrote up at my work due to them blasting a stream in the break room when the kid(streamer) starting ranting about how terrible female players were (lots of foul descriptions).

I would have thought that annoying cunt PewDiePie already hit this... but maybe he doesn't do Twitch?

But yeah, throw me into the category of "I don't get it"

I do get that cable is as dead as dinosaurs though... Better start re thinking having people pay for it... it wont survive past the next generation...But yeah, i don't get it ( twitch) 100% either..

Good for him. He knows his audience, and caters to it. Which is the sign of any good performer. He just kind of bugs me though. Not to mention he, like all popular streamers for some reason, will say the n-word on stream and his little empire will come tumbling down.

he was just the first to make enough money to buy followers that never had or used prime before.

Actually, people do care... personally I've no interest in watching him (or any streamer), but I saw him on H3 Podcast and he seems like a nice guy who apparently shaves his ass and I'm sure that's part of the reason people tune in...

Would you prefer watching the NFL or some crappy back water high school football team? Ninja would be top tier NFL. That's the difference. People like watching others play games they play, but at a waaay higher skill level. I've watched him about 5 or 6 times and he is ridiculously good at the game.

Why buy season tickets to your favorite NFL team when you can just go play a pick up game of flag football at the park?

According him and his wife/girlfriend/whatever they're saving a lot of money and not just blowing millions on random shit. Be a surprise if someone so young actually does that, but anything is possible I suppose.

Given I never liked watching sportsball either but I cant get into Twitch stuff for games. I did enjoy watching someone sculpt with clay once, that was neat to see their technique.

I dunno, some of it seems like paid fake viewers. Ive jumped into quiet a few random semi big channels to get overview of different games, and the instant i jump in, the host looks directly at camera and adjusts themselves. I mean, if they have 100s of viewers, why would they notice me coming in....

There have to be paid services out there.

There really is no difference when it comes to spectator entertainment.

You could say there is a difference between a actual sports match vs a daily youtube/twitch playing. Yet sports has espn and people watch that all the time... others talking about sports clips etc. Which could be considered similar.

You could use your argument for sports... why watch someone play sports when you could be playing it yourself? It's like your kid watching football instead of playing with the one you bought them...

Don't get me wrong I don't like watching either sports or gameplay (outside of discussion, learning etc), but I certainly understand that people like to watch/do different things for entertainment and there really isn't a difference in being "entertained" as it is a very personal thing.

IMO You're placing what YOU value as skill and entertainment on others, instead of thinking to yourself.. Hey someone might get the same enjoyment of watching games as I do watching sports go figure.

Good for him. I'll watch him when he's playing with TimTheTatMan (who's hilariously entertaining) but Ninja on his own just isn't that exciting.

He's super popular with kids I guess, that's really his major contributor to his numbers. Can't fault him though, he's making bank and having fun. Tons of people love to hate him but secretly would love to do what he does.

As for the people who just dismiss watching entertaining streamers because "why not just play yourself", try and understand for a second that there might be more to watching a streamer than the game .Their basically entertainers and make it a really engaging and fun experience beyond just watching them play. Certain ones are incredibly good at this while others just play and if ignore chat which is boring as hell.

I don't watch/read about or play any traditional "sports" but video games and streams are incredibly interesting to me.

People are into different things. Wierd.

Most of the time when I watch my favorite WoW shadow priest streamer it's cause I also play shadow priest and he's my friend and there's a little community built around his brand/channel so a lot of people show up to socialize or ask questions etc.

Most viewers are incredibly young. It is an amazing new generation. They also have their parent's credit card linked for quick payments to get those sweet sweet emotes...
