Nexus M ( 2015 ) Smartphone

Generally it doesn't throttle which is great. But gaming more than 10 minutes will warm the phone up and slowly throttle as the heat soaks into the metal frame. That metal frame is great because it means for normal use there's never throttling.

Yeah, I've been using my 6P for a while now and the only thing that bugs me is something Google and Hauwei couldn't have controlled: the SD810 throttling.

Probably more due to the slower NAND performance than CPU throttling. Even throttled, I can't see what you would be doing on the phone to make it noticeable, even on demanding games the 810 has enough power to maintain framerates while being throttled because no games are out that exceed the last couple SoC generations capability, let alone the current ones.

And yet I'm the one with a Nexus 6P and enough experience with CPU core and frequency tracking to have narrowed it down to thermal throttling. But hey you can make assertions that NAND performance is bringing my frame rate to the gutter somehow instead of the stutters slow NAND would actually cause.

Incidentally, the GPU is usually barely ticking away, the overly aggressive CPU throttling is simply hurting the performance.

I can and will. ;)

Ever used the phone while downloading anything, or installing/updating apps? It makes the phone skip a lot on pretty much every Android device I've seen sans the newer Samsung phones with UFS 2.0.

You still haven't said what you're playing or doing yet either to support your assumptions.

After a month of usage, I tend to agree. Google Fi was the initial draw, but now I can comfortably say the Huawei hardware was a good leap forward (coming from an HTC flagship here). My only complaints about the 6P would be the camera being slightly laggy and the speaker grooves being dust collectors.

Goodbye Sprint, and good riddance.

fair enough, but I will say the camera performance is the best I have seen in a phone ever.
Maybe there is faster I haven't owned every phone, but the pics I have taken with the 6p and the speed at which I can take the pics are pretty great.
As for dust, get out of the coal mine.

Let me take you up on good faith okay? Do you own a SD810 device or the Nexus 6P (preferably the 6P because I suspect the thermal daemon is configured differently depending on your device)?

Go and install Dragonball Dokkan Battle. It's a 2D game but the animations have components that are purely GPU accelerated and some that are CPU calculated sprite effects. It's a particular good test case because you can actually see the GPU components continue to run at 60FPS while the CPU calculated parts chug down.

Once you're on reasonably sized main map, the phone will start to get noticeably warm. Do some battles and you should be able to see the throttling after a while assuming your room temperature isn't air conditioned.

It's very notable that my older LG G2, with far slower NAND than the Nexus 6P, can run this without any hiccups. It simply doesn't need a lot of CPU power but the throttling is too aggressive on the 6P.

With Kernel Aduitor installed, it's pretty easy to track the thermal throttling. At around 50 degrees celsius, the Big core is capped to 960MHz while the Little core is capped to 1344MHz.

I figured it out. Did some investigation of how the thermal daemon is controlled and the settings for the 6P are ridiculous. They must have heard about people screaming of the super hot M9 and decided to set the throttle threshold really low to avoid that. Absolutely no problems when web browsing but actively impeded some games.

/system/etc/thermal-engine.conf is the control file.
Big core hits 960MHz by 43 degrees while the Little core is also 960MHz but at 46 degrees (there's a bit more fine-grain but that's the ultimate cap not including the Shutdown temperature at 66 degrees). Likewise, the GPU is throttled to 180MHz by 48 degrees.

A few edits and then a reboot and now I no longer get the framerate drops but only the few stutters that are from the slow NAND (since I knew about those already). A quick check of Kernel Aduitor shows me that temperatures are now getting past 50 degrees all the way to 60 which is still below the new threshold of 70-80 I had set so my suspicion of too aggressive throttling seems to be on the money.

I'm probably going to return mine. The bottom speaker isn't as loud as the top speaker. I didn't really mind because I don't use speakers all that much. But then I tried a call on speaker phone and it only uses the bottom speaker on speaker phone. Basically there couldn't be any noise or I had a hard time telling what the other person was saying.

If you guys bought your phones prior to the Black Friday sale, it looks like they are doing an unsolicited refund for the difference on the 5X at least. I had a nice little $86 refund in the bank this morning.

You didn't ask for it? It just came?

I wonder if they will do anything for people like me paying monthly on Fi. I got my 5x like two weeks ago.

I have my doubts that this is common place. Google was very underhanded in their fine print.
Viper - I think I even responded to your post in the BF thread haha - you could tell I was not happy about Google's handling of this.

I personally filed for price protection and Chase handled it really well. Getting the full $80 difference back.
+1 to Chase
-1 to Google.

Edit: @Viper - Hang on - you're on Project-Fi? The people who were credited on Black Friday were all on Project-Fi.
And the unofficial date they were giving in chat support was 11/09 - so you should definitely be getting that credit.
Did you already contact them?

Email from google...

Thank you for contacting Project Fi Support! My name is Jennifer and I will be your Project Fi expert today. Thanks for your interest in our Nexus 5X. I understand you're writing because the device is in promotion for Black Friday and you've already purchased your phone prior to Black Friday promotions and would still want to get discount. I get that. I can definitely continue to assist you with this.

I am delighted to let you know that our Project Fi specialists have responded and confirmed that anyone who purchased a Nexus 5X at full price between 11/9 and 11/26 will automatically be receiving an $80 credit to the billing instrument used for purchase- they will be notified about this credit via email on 11/27 (proactive automatic credit). To answer your question about financing, Fi customers will have the option to reduce the discounted price over the same 24 month period, meaning the 16GB 5X will cost $12.46/month, and the 32GB 5X will cost $14.54/month. Our Fi customers who are financing a Nexus 5X and are eligible for the $80 automatic credit will receive the $80 credit to the billing instrument used for the initial order. They'll essentially receive a surplus since their initial payment will most likely be less than $80.

Nice - like I said man, Project-Fi users are getting treated very well.

Curious if Ruoh is also on Project-Fi too...

I ended up returning mine and going with a nexus 6 from amazon. $180 (discount with CC) vs $540 (tax). The difference I couldn't justify keeping the 6p.

My friend with a Nexus 6 can't get rid of soon enough. And yes - he has a ton of envy for a 6P, especially after seeing on in-person.
Shamu is a very appropriate name for it :p

@Ruoh - Thanks. I hate being right, but I'm not surprised. They got lots of love for Fi users, that's for sure.

Lucky... I tried to get ahold of them on Monday or Tuesday and got flatly refused on a partial refund given I got the thing less than two weeks before black friday. Their only offer was a return and re-purchase.

Just wanted to post back some thoughts after owning the 6P since launch.

I have read various complaints about the phone and I know that most people only ever post their negative impressions or complaints.

I for one have had ZERO problems with the 6p. It remains the best phone I have ever owned. I keep it in a case, and in my front pocket most of the time. I will even keep it in my pocket when working on stuff, stacking firewood, bringing in firewood, chopping firewood. (its winter). Point is, I don't baby it.

It really has been everything I wanted and exceeded my expectation in almost every way. Fast, great camera, 240FPS is a hoot. Great screen, sweet pure Android and a fingerprint sensor that works everytime like second nature.

So, I don't mean to gush, but I know that some people out there be dissin it. But there are I suspect a TON of people like me who have not regretted buying the 6P one bit.

So if you want it, here it is come and get it. Don't be afraid. You will like it.

^^My coworker finally got on the 6P, since his Verizon phone died.
I think that's a pretty big deal, since he's not at all a tech enthusiast (or even PC enthusiast).

To be fair, Google has been running a TON of ads during sports, Walking Dead, etc.

Pretty hard to not see the TV ads at this point haha.

Yeah, I think my 6P is great. I have it in a thin case and I put it in my front jeans pocket occasionally. No bend.

The only things that would have made it absolutely perfect (as opposed to great) is a bit longer active battery life (idle is amazing) and less thermal throttling over long loads (gaming is the weakpoint here).

I liked my 6p, but I ended up returning it for a nexus 6 because of a $400 price difference. Its still a good phone I would recommend.

Sorry about this post, but I need to vent:

So, it looks like the Marshmallow 6.0.1 OTA update broke my 6P. First auto-rotate stopped working (this happened with my Nexus 7 as well, though that appeared to fix itself after a few reboots), and now the camera app won't work. Whenever I open it the viewfinder never turns on, and when I look around back the laser autofocus is perpetually on, even after I close the camera app. I have to restart the phone to make it turn off.

At this point its looking like I'll have to reflash the phone altogether (which means wiping everything, which is annoying) or downgrade to 6.0.0. Ugh, I wanted fast updates and it looks like I got it.

What do you expect? Nexus are developer devices to guinea pig bleeding edge Android for general deployment to other devices when it reaches stable staus. You're a paying guinea pig but the rest of us appreciate your effort.

6.0.1 has been running fine here for weeks. Know guys with 6P that took the OTA that it runs fine for to.

Flukes are just that. Be grateful you have a Nexus you can just Fastboot flash and not a Samsuck that is locked into oblivion whose warranty is voided the second you root it.

I presume you treat all the people who gripe about OTAs on Samsung breaking crap as being archetypical of all users as well. Oh wait. You don't.
