It was inevitable and it is catching up with more states.

https://kb.newegg.com/knowledge-base/states-we-charge-sales-tax-in/

Starting July 1st, eight more states will get bent over with sales tax:

Arizona
Arkansas
Florida (<-- my state :rage:)
Kansas
New Mexico
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
Virginia

The rest of the states currently getting taxed are also listed on that page.

This really cools down the choice between Amazon and Newegg for me. Stopped using Amazon when they dropped a warehouse down in Central FL.

i'm surprised every state with sales tax hasn't already forced all e-tailers to charge taxes.. but yeah you're right it'll definitely help out the B&M stores, sadly there's only 1 bestbuy within 250 miles of me :( wish we had a microcenter here.

With the exception of things with MAP, everything online is generally cheaper, by margins far cheaper than my 6% sales tax. So no biggie there. We have two warehouses up the road from me, and several others around the state, as well as at least two call centers.

Previously for items less than $100, tax and shipping we trade offs when comparing against a B&M store.

Now online sellers might have to find ways to ship cheaper, like Amazon, or lower prices to maintain their competitive advantage.

Meh.
Online shopping for me is about selection... things that wouln't even be possible to get in the store... which means I spend more, which means.... Is online shopping a good idea?

I can't tell you the last time I ordered from Newegg. They take forever to ship items out. I just use Amazon and it's here in 2 days.

The only time I would order from Newegg is when it's much cheaper and I don't need it right away.

Something about because you can, does that mean you should?

Remember a couple years ago when newegg decided to send everyone's purchase history to state's requesting it so they could send people tax bills? Newegg wasn't even being legally forced to do it, they just sent it over.
Some people ended up owing thousands of dollars in sales tax.

I haven't even gone to their site since then.

There was also the hack last year where any new accounts would have their credit card information sent to a hacker. It went on for days or weeks before someone found it and told newegg about it.

Newegg kind of sucked before that anyways. Slow shipping and prices typically beat by Amazon or Microcenter. I wouldn't be surprised if they go out of business soon.

Meh they`re making the instore retailers more appealing I guess.
When's the last time you saw a single store with the kind of product inventory of places like Newegg or Amazon? Realistically, we all SHOULD have been paying taxes on our online purchases for years. None of us did and since we're effectively "stealing" sales tax money from the state (at least in the state's view of things) they're going to start forcing e-tailers to charge change and ensure we are paying for what we buy. Either that or, I guess, we should just all move to states with no sales tax.

Nah still doesn't make B&M stores appealing to me. Being nagged if I need help with something by someone who doesn't have a lick of knowledge constantly, still has no appeal to me. Checkout lines, finding theres no stock once you get there, and not being able to really research something you find interesting. Plus the nearest best by for me is 40mins away. If I need something faster than tomorrow I go to a store, but otherwise 2-3days is fine to just order online.

Exactly. Anyways, newegg tends to be cheaper than Amazon and the last few times I ordered from them, much quicker shipping. Due to free shipping and no tax I started to use B&H but now they obviously have to charge sales tax. I think that website is the cleanest and fasted of the three but they don't carry as many brands as newegg. And they tend to randomly close their online checkout whenever some Jewish holiday comes up, including one on Black Friday.

Now I'll probably go back to newegg and Amazon but sadly Amazon doesn't take PayPal.

Microcenter. Ever since NE started charging tax here in MD I been going to MC. Their selection is good enough for what ever I need.

Lucky, very few of us have that option. I have a frys (empty) 4 hours away. One of the few things I miss about living in SoCal, micro center.

*Shrug* New York is already been hit and therefore, I would rather drive down to the Microcenter in Ohio and enjoy myself. (3 hours, one way.) I am going to Florida in 5 days and am planning on stopping at all the Microcenter stores along the way, even if I buy nothing. Basically, the stores in Ohio and Georgia.

Newegg sometimes has good deals and I will buy something spontaneously but, the taxes kill it nowadays.

Dammit. And right before the Zen2/Navi launch. I so wish Costco would get into tech more than they currently do.

Last big order I made through newegg was my ram in late 2017 ($420 for 32gb, ouch.) Since then I've only made some smaller purchases, and they started charging tax in Massachusetts. I'm more likely to buy from B&H, who still doesn't charge for me yet, or head into Micro Center for a mobo/cpu combo since I'm eating the tax penalty anyway.

I thought they could only charge sales tax if they had a physical presence in the state...Newegg doesn't have that in NY...

Not surprising. Expect all states to slowly start charging sales tax on all online purchases as time goes on due to the Supreme Court ruling from June 2018. Even if a business doesn't have a physical presence or connection (a prior requirement) in the state they can now still be required to collect sales tax.

Newegg's up to 43 of the 45 states that charge sales tax. Texas is one of the two exceptions; not sure what the other one is.

I guess I will not be earning a little extra money (about $50) building computers for family and friends anymore because they will all go to BB for their computers. Why pay $100 to $150 more and need to wait a week? That also puts me out of the market for computer hardware for the foreseeable future.

People still use Newegg? That's so 10+ years ago. Seriously, I used to order from Newegg all the time but I couldn't tell you the last time I bought anything from them. Last email I got from them was for some expensive sunglasses that they said I ordered and were about to ship. I contacted them and told them I hadn't ordered anything and canceled my account. That's been several (guessing 7+ years ago) and I haven't found the need since....

Yeah, that coupled with sales volume triggers as defined by sales tax nexus agreements pretty much just about ensures that all states which collect sales taxes will sooner or later end up joining the crowd.

I’ve probably bought 15k+ worth of parts form Newegg over the years but my last purchase was in about 2013. Didn’t even do it purposefully, Amazon just became the better option in most cases around then.

The states make that decision so what is the point in getting mad at newegg about it? I remember here in Alabama when they were talking about that a few years ago and now every online purchase has been getting taxed for well over a year. That includes even sites like Steam.

yup same here in washington everything is taxed online now. i've just gotten use to it and really hasn't changed my purchasing habits at all but does make me consider buying at b&m stores more often than before so i don't have to deal with waiting for shipping.

Luckily I live in a state that doesn't have any sales tax... on anything... ever. (<3 Oregon)

However the closest thing to me anywhere near the selection of newegg is Frys, and the prices there tend to be awful.

Newegg still has its place if you follow those damn emails every day. Sometimes I see something that's hard to pass up. I got this laptop
https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16834316558?Item=N82E16834316558

for $700 about 2 months ago.

I also grabbed 32GB of ram (4x 8gb of DDR4 3000) for $130 through an email deal back in march.

previous to that it was just mostly used for 10% off nintendo eshop cards and I bought my Fractal Design R5 Tempered Glass Window from them, I'm pretty sure they were the exclusive seller.

Do you really think so? I don't. You may very well be right, and I'm not arguing...just giving my opinion.
I think the ease of making purchases and selection available online plus the convenience of making purchases without getting off your ass instead of dealing with traffic will trump a bit of sales tax.
Perhaps for larger purchases the equation would swing in favor of retail outlets but outside of that, I don't see it.

I think NewEgg has other larger problems to worry about besides sales tax. I don't know about most folks here but I haven't used them for anything in more than a few years.

My favorite saying is that “Newegg is a great search engine for your Amazon purchases.”

I used to order a ton from Newegg but over the past 7 or 8 years, my Newegg purchases have drastically dropped to the point where most years, I don’t order from them. I live close to one of their warehouses and over the last couple of years, my only purchases were from their will-call service. However, they decided to end will-call in Indianapolis so I’m probably done with them.

Canada welcomes you. I even pay sales tax on items from eBay on occasion.
