New Samsung Odyssey G9 with MiniLED announced

1440 pee is gross.....I mean shit I just sent the X38 packin as 1600pee is too dated. If your gonna spend $2500 may as well save up and get a real monitor...PG32UQX

Wake me up when we got a curved 38" 5120 x 2160 2000+ MiniLed Fald Zone, HDR 2000+, 175+hz display
Or you could just appreciate that there are multiple different options on the market.

I would take a 40" 5120x2160 with the specs you state any day but we are probably years away from getting even a simple high refresh rate version of those screens.

I really like the form factor of the Samsung ultrawides. It's just much better for desktop use and makes windows easy to lay out. No scaling needed either. Really rubbish HDR was one of the bigger drawbacks of the Samsungs. I actually feel the Samsung ultrawides offer better value for money than the PG32UQX even though they are still overpriced just to get better HDR.

You're sounding like a broken record here. So it's 1440. It's 1440 in 13.2" vertical. Which is the a slightly higher pixel density than a 43" 4K's 2160 in 20.85". Considering that this thing is 46" wide I doubt anyone will be sitting less than 40" away and at that distance, You won't notice the pixel. I don't notice the pixel on either one of my 43" sets.

Higher PPI doesn't mean its got better detail clarity. My 48cx worked much better for distance enemy spotting in detailed shooters like BFV vs the X38 which has higher ppi.

I had the X38 side by side my PG32 for a week and the X38 looked like 1080pee in comparison.

1440pee presents more image jaggies vs 4k once you go over 27" and i detest any and all AA.

Also 1440 sucks for watching 4k content and doesnt scale 1080pee or 4k content the best, which is super annoying for desktop use.

32:9, super curve, 2000 nits HDR all sound AMAZING....but i have a hard time rationalizing what I would use this for. Maybe halo Reach which is not as detailed as a battliefield games and has much closer shooting engagements. Sims and racers i prefer VR.

I dunno what kind of content you all use something like this for?

Everything. Workstation use, gaming, sim games; sucks for RTS I’ll admit, in general, but it rocks for everything else. Plus workstation usage is amazing. Also, not afraid of AA, and it looks as good as either of my good 1440P screens, and about as good as my cheap 4K. Not as good as the monster Bravia I have for the home theater, but that’s an 8k TV.

*complains about vertical resolution*

What? How did you get that from what I said?

What I said was resolution is king, even more important than PPI....thus 48" 4k shows more detail than 27" 1440 despite lesser PPI.....well don't wanna sound like a dick or nuttin.....

Damn that curve is so sexy!

I just dont know if its worth the upgrade from my current system

First review in Korean: https://quasarzone.com/bbs/qc_qsz/views/1040307

Some of the below might be wrong as I am relying on Google Translate here. I only know enough Korean to say please, thanks and cheers. :D

TL;DR:
  • Local dimming w/ mini-LED seems to work very well.
  • PbP now works at 240 Hz.
  • Input lag seems a bit high but nothing too bad. This could be a difference in how they measure compared to say TFTCentral or Rtings.
  • VRR has two ranges: 48 Hz - 120 Hz and 96 Hz - 240 Hz. 48 Hz - 144 Hz over HDMI 2.1.
  • DP supports 240 Hz with DSC.
  • HDMI 2.1 only works up to 144 Hz.
  • HDR brightness is very good, ~1370 nits at 100% window and ~2600 nits at 10% window.
  • Seems the display can be set to dim enough in SDR usage too. Similar to how my CRG9 performs where 15% brightness setting was ~120 nits.
I hope they can make the VRR work at 48 Hz - 240 Hz or at least 60 Hz - 240 Hz because it would be annoying to have to pick and choose what to use on a per game basis, especially when many games still don't let you pick refresh rate. I guess for multiplayer shooters you would run 240 Hz and for single player games 120 Hz considering my 2080 Ti + CRG9 in games like RDR2 were hovering somewhere around 50-70 fps.

Overall seems like a pretty impressive package. Form factor is of course not for everyone and has its own compromises.

well according to wiki and anandtech theoretically it does..

The 48 Gbit/s bandwidth provided by HDMI 2.1 is enough for 8K resolution at approximately 50 Hz, with 8 bpc RGB or Y′CBCR 4:4:4 color. To achieve even higher formats, HDMI 2.1 can use Display Stream Compression with a compression ratio of up to 3:1. Using DSC, formats up to 8K (7680 × 4320) 120 Hz or 10K (10240 × 4320) 100 Hz at 8 bpc RGB/4:4:4 are possible. Using Y′CBCR with 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 chroma subsampling in combination with DSC can allow for even higher formats.[123]

Or from review:

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 S49AG950 supports HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.0 has a bandwidth of only 18 Gbps, which requires color loss to be taken into account for 120 Hz output at 4K UHD resolution. It goes without saying that you can use HDR. And by applying DSC 1.2 corresponding to the DisplayPort standard, it compresses data and transmits signals even in environments that require high bandwidth. Theoretically, even at 7680 x 4320 8K resolution, 120 Hz output is possible without color loss, and at 4K UHD resolution, it supports up to 240 Hz. In addition, variable refresh rate technology 1) is newly supported and new technologies such as eARC, QMS, QFT, and ALLM are additionally provided.

HDMI 2.1 does support DSC but whether GPUs and displays support it is another question.

I think the Neo G9 just doesn't support DSC on anything but Displayport so you are limited to 4K 144 Hz over HDMI 2.1.

I'm fine with that because running 5120x1440 in most games at above 144 fps is difficult in the first place, consoles only support 120 Hz and for 240 Hz you can always use Displayport.

Looks like you cannot pre-order from Samsungs site. I pre-ordered from Best Buy.

I'd love to order this monitor but the previous version of the G9 has so many problems. I think I'll sit back and wait for reviewed before I make a decision.

Looks like Samsung has it up on their site now for pre-order. I'm glad I went with Best Buy though; I can just drop it off down the street if I have any issues.

I got first dips once you post it on the "For Sale/Trade" section... ;)

If you state "I don’t have an actual physical meter to test the brightness" then that takes away a lot of credibility for monitor review. Calibration meters are not super expensive and if you aim to do display reviews in any regular capacity then you need one.

But this still has some useful bits. There's two different HDR modes with "Dynamic HDR" apparently being the one capable of 2000 nits whereas the "Standard HDR" is 1000 nits. Might be useful for use with say content mastered for 1000 nits.

A more pleasant surprise if the custom key setting. This finally lets you change at least one of the shortcuts to something more useful than the "eye saver". Putting this to PbP toggle would make it much nicer to use. I would still like to see Samsung offer a software similar to Gigabyte's Sidekick so you don't have to use the OSD whatsoever and could have things like presets for different situations.

I'm curious to know how the hell the 2048 FALD performs without the aid of a physical Gsync module to control everything. Samsung's efforts on their 4k Mini LED TV's are an OK effort but are still quite lacking when it comes to combining VRR, response time overdrive, and FALD all in 1 package without the use of the module.

Damnit you guys got me hype for this. Debating buying it.

My biggest issue is Samsung's horrific track record with VRR flicker.

My CRG9 is perfect used as GSync compatible with a 3090, I couldnt ask for better VRR.

That's good to hear. Does DLSS work in games at this resolution?
Yep, as lopoetve says, DLSS has always been available when supported by the game.
This ultra widescreen experience is magic.

I preordered on Amazon to be safe. Hate curved displays and the vertical resolution concerns are IMO valid but this has higher PPI than my CX so I'll have to use it myself to come to a conclusion.

Mostly magic. Some games don’t do so well but from a productivity and gaming mix? Excellent!!!

Yeah but the G9 has tons and tons of people reporting scanlines, VRR flicker, black screens, etc. This will 100% be a work in progress for 6 months after release because Samsung seems to learn nothing from prior monitors.

You shoulda bought from Best Buy, that way you could drive it back same day for refund!

I know it sounds like a better idea but I'm allergic to returns in store. Makes me feel like a pleb.

EDIT: It's $2062 from Samsung direct with a work/student discount. I might actually got that route since $450 savings is pretty significant.

How do you add to cart?

It just came back in stock.

EDIT: yeah it's going in and out of stock.

Well...im not a student or a teacher.....I have a doctorate in pornographay, but thats another thing entirely i suppose. Seems to be too much hassle for something I will end up returning in less than 24 hours

Yeah I already know I'm going to hate it since it's a 27" vertically which is for ants but I want to give the aspect ratio a try and see what 2000nits+ feels like.

Also 1440p looks like ass in games once you get use to 4k.

Ya 1440p isn't going to cut it, but for some reason I still want to try it. I know like 99% chance I'm going to return it and keep the PG32.

I didnt have trouble transitioning from a high end 55" UHD HDR2000 screen to 49" UW 1440p HDR1000 for gaming.
I much prefer the UW screen for gaming even though HDR is nicer on the UHD screen.
For movies, no contest, the UHD screen wins.

I recently sent back the X38. 1600pee didn't cut it for me as the PG32UQX has spoiled me. Also, lack of FALD on the X38 was a real problem for me as HDR400 blows ass.

I liked the 38" UW form factor for FPS and will jump back in the UW market once a 2160 vert high refresh model with FALD happens...which should be never by my calculations lol

U guys are like me, want to test every high end monitor.

I might wait for Socali to get his and give his impression on the Neo G9 vs the CX.

I also have the CX, and like him I am a bit worried about the teeny weeny vertical height on the Neo G9. I think it is just too small, but then again it might make the difference horizontally?

I love my CX for gaming, it looks very immersive to me, there is no real need to change it besides going for something with a better peak brightness. So I am reluctant to get the Neo G9 to replace the CX because of its super small veritcal height, but it is still so very tempting with it's mouth watering specs.

I was contemplating the PG32UQX but after hearing from many reviews/sources that it has slower pixel response than a granny with a broken leg, I immediately decided to cancel my interest in that one as I am super super sensitive to pixel response.

Guess I will wait for Socali's verdict on the Geo N9.

Yeah I've placed my order. It just came back in stock on Samsung for anyone interested in getting it for $2062 using one of the discount programs and maybe sell the headphones for $100. If you create a new account you can also get an additional 5-10% off with a referral code.

I'm really only interested in it for the sake of productivity + it being different from my CX. PG32UQX is nice but it's a inferior CX in a smaller size where as this has versatility on it's side so it's deficiencies compared to an OLED can possibly be excused. The PG32 was just redundant as long as I had a CX next to it.

Last important distinction really is it's claimed native contrast is 4000:1 along with the smaller area per dimming zone will be a huge improvement compared to the PG32UQX in that regard. Whether it will be as fast as the prior panel is yet to be seen though.

Biggest gripe is definitely 1440p which I haven't used since back when people were OC'ing Qnix monitors.

Edit: Black uniformity is ass like on all curved displays but it's FALD covers it and appears to be miles better than the PG32 (less abrupt zone transitions too).
