New Ryzen build what memory should I get?

I am finally going to upgrade from my Core i7 920 to a nice new Ryzen system. I am looking to get the Ryzen 1600 and either the Asus Strix B350-F Gaming or the MSI Tomahawk, depending on which one has the best deal when I go to buy it.

The only issue I am having is that I am completely lost on what ram to buy for some fairly decent overclocking room. There are so many different models and speeds. I would like to get a 16B pair that would allow me to do some basic overclocking for fun. I would also be planning to upgrade to the 2600X at some point.
 
G.skill, Corsair, and Team Group all make good ram for Ryzen. Just try and get 3200 cas 14 or 3600 cas 16.
 
if you want 3200 then it must be cas 14 to guarantee you get samsung B chips, if you want to save a little money go with 3000 cas 16 which is going to be hynix chips, do not waste money on the 3200 cas 16 stuff since you'll be locked to 2933mhz unless you can get it cheaper than the 3000(the ripjaw V 3200c16 stuff goes on sale periodically for less than the ripjaw V 3000c16 stuff).

for 3200 CL14 go gskill tridentz or flarX, for ddr4 3000 cl16 go gskill ripjaw V or corsair LPX.. those are the ones i know off the top of my head from researching back in october but honestly all the companies these days are the same.. they all either use samsung or hynix based ram so the real deciding factors going to be price and warranty service.

the only real things that matter @ ddr4 3200 is that CL14 is guaranteed to be samsung B, CL15 is a 50/50 chance samsung or hynix based and CL16 is 100% hynix.. samsung B allows 3200mhz+ while hynix caps out at 2933 and in rare cases 3066.


pretty sure those are hynix chips so you'd more than likely want to go with the DDR4 3000 CL16 version instead of the 3200.

Check QVL for both motherboards, pick up the memory which appears on both in general that should work , not doing this and picking up deals will end up bad.

This is not true.
I had zero issues getting 3200 MHz with Corsair lpx c16. Just set it, and forget it.
I honestly think all this ram speed business was limited to early silicon and early bios. But can't be sure because I didn't buy early silicon. Both my systems just ran 3200 no headaches.
I would recommend the strix over the Tomahawk at any price.
 
I think it is the board itself that makes Hynix incompatible. I noticed Vdroop for memory on my Tomahawk. VRMs and power phases matter a lot. Hynix is the fickle chip That Corsair CAS 16 ain't the schiznitz. Really like what Team group is bringing to the table. Gskill prices, go home. You're drunk.
 
I didn't say it was, it was actually the cheapest 3200 in stock at the time. But it still runs 3200 all day long.

Get the strix b350.

Motherboard is the single most important component in your system. High performance components that dont work right because your mainboard is junk are very annoying.

I have the strix 350 and it's bios is great. Mine works miracles with sub standard memory apparently as well.

That's not true. My 3200 C15 kit have Sammy B's

Though not a sure-fire method, the way I looked through to find mine were to focus on the set of timings.
14-14-14, 15-15-15, 16-16-16... likely Samsung, and probably B-die.
14-16-16, 16-18-18... Likely not Samsung, and most assuredly not B-die, and so who cares? lol

Exceptions to this rule are in the case of Corsair at the very least, since they will keep a singular part number for a kit, regardless of IC's used, and just change the version number. I believe it was one of the high-end kits, like a 4133 or 4200 flavor, that was 18-20-20, yet a certain version number came with Samsung B-die.

I loved Corsair back in the SDR/DDR days, but I prefer G.Skill now!
 

I have this ram

It runs at 3066 (DOCP) w/stock volts rock solid on Asus x370 Pro but that is it. It will boot at 3200 but won't pass Prime and/or blue screen. Volts don't help that i have found and it's fast enough for me with a 1600X coming from a 1090T.

And this is what I paid on 5/22/2017 for the same kit.

I have to question the choice of the 1600? If you plan to upgrade to a 2600x anyway? Which will be a fairly minor upgrade. Why not buy a 2600x straight out?
 
I highly doubt they'd need 1.5V at 3200 lol After all, that rating is for DDR4-4600 lol
 
other option just to throw it out there, x400 series motherboards instead of the x300 based boards (so as an example x470 instead of x370, the "lower end" will be releasing for the 400 series AM4 socket shortly)

the only reason I state this is they have increased memory speeds for the new ryzen 2000 generation (ryzen on 12nm) vs generation 1 ryzen (ryzen 1000 series which are 14nm based)

slight increase in clock speed for the chips as well as increased memory speeds that are more easily supported "out of the box"

now you can just buy a ryzen generation 1 and do the bios/agesa update to support them (if even is required on the x400 generation AM4 socket boards) or just get a 2000 series and pair it up with a x400 based board

just offering a "suggestion" is all as there are many options of course....I myself have been sitting on the fence for awhile as I WANT to upgrade as well, but memory pricing as well as GPU pricing really puts a major rain on my parade (Canada)

anyways ryzen 2600-2600x-2700-2700x are REALLY nice chips vs the generation 1 counterparts, a bit more for the cost but they also have more raw clock speed so it pretty much balances out and the 2700x very much is an awesome cpu, from what I have read many different review sites on.

my one brother has Ryzen 1700 and he is quite happy with it (Ryzen 2000 all but the 2600 come with a decent coolers in the box which is a double benefit at least if you just plan on using at stock or a slight clock increase)

the x400 series motherboards that were supposedly going to launch at a lesser cost did not as supposedly AMD said straight up would be less costly for the AIB to make (seems ~$30+ then the x300 series, probably all the RGB light show everywhere could account for some of this...LIARS lol)
