Just read Nvidia may be allready working on a new gpu called the GT300. If this is true, Nvidia must really be panicking over the new ATi RV700 dual card. Supposedly the GT300 is built with a 45nm die process and uses GDDR5. Upgrade anyone? :D

Any links? We have to assume that nVidia is going to pull out every stop it can right now. This is what we wanted right? Competition!

Companies like these are always at least a couple of generations ahead. The G80 was already in development when the the GeForce 5 series LAUNCHED. I wouldn't be surprised if they're working on the GT400 and GT500 too.

Yeah, it's not like they just sit down and put out a new design in 2 weeks. By the time the 280 was launched at 65nm, the 55nm version was already in production testing. The next series is probably 50% through development, and two generations ahead is probably starting development.

They're going to get the 55nm shrink out the door before they go on to a new 45nm uarch.

GT300 (I doubt that's its codename) won't be coming out this year. It will likely come out next year or the year after.

A new graphics card coming out a year or more from now from nVidia - who would have guessed?

Yep, to mirror what was said, I don't think the GT300 series will be out for 10-12 months or so. Maybe ATI will really give nVidia the squeeze and force them to get it out early, like say, 8 months.

If you believe rumors, the RV700 outperforms the GTX280 from 50% to 80% in tests.

Rumors also said that RV600 would outperform G80 :p

In the worst case scenario, though, R700 will just be crossfire 4870 on a single card, meaning it'll be significantly faster than a 280. Hopefully the 'improved CF' rumors are true :D

The GT200 with tweaks and a shrink to 55nm and some faster clocks and lower cost wouldn't be chicken shit. The GT 200 is very capable, it needs some refinements obviously.

I don't think anyone's saying that. If GT200 had RV770's die size (and thus price) and thermal characteristics, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

The thermals haven't looked that bad to me honestly. I'm about to get three standard GTX 280's clocked to 660/1420/1150 and have hit about 90C after an hour of Crysis in a not so great thermal setup, my PSU is right below the bottom card. Even at the same process size the GT 200 would still be about 50% since it has 50% more transistors but it should get the costs down a good bit.

I do think that because of the launch prices, people kinda glossed over the GTX's and didn't really appreciate that this is still a potent GPU and looks to have potential.

The launch prices were a strange thing. They really took advantage of the people who really had to have them that first month they were out. I don't necessarly see anything wrong with that though. Every who bought them when they first were released SHOULD have known that prices may be getting adjusted quickly depending on what ATI put out.

Even if the R700 is just 4870 crossfire on a single card, this beast will be a daunting card for Nvidia to match or overcome soon. Imagine 2GB of GDDR5 on a single card! Wow.

2gb on a card doesnt mean shit

True 2gb on a videocard may mean shit, but we are talking about 2gb of GDDR5. Surely having this much bandwidth will improve performance at the larger resolutions; just like the higher end 8800 cards(like the 8800GTX) enjoyed. Nvidia knows the benefits of more GDDR ram hence the increased ram amount on the GTX260 and GTX280.

according to here... dont expect anything on the high end fron NVIDIA for the rest of the year

the next wave from NVIDIA will be 55nm versions of the 9600GT, 9500GT and 9400GS
Also the 9800GT will be launched as well

the gtx280 and 260 are it for 2008 on the upper end for the green team

it doesnt really matter if its gddr5 or not because no single card out there is strong enough to utilize that much memory. its like having 512mb on an 8500gt or 1gb on an 8600gt. all the memory and all the bandwidth in the world doesnt mean crap if the card isnt strong enough to run at settings that would actually need that much memory.

yeah But AA takes much less of a hit with all that fast ram onboard

I'd call a 55nm refresh of the 280/260 "something on the high end". And according to Digi Times we'll see them late Q2/early Q3. (That's late September, early August for those of you who don't know your Qs. :p)

IIRC, I read somewhere that TSMC is skiping 45nm and going to 40nm, so maybe GTX300 series is going to be 40nm. Anybody else heard about this?

I have not.

+1 From scratch to finish, these cards take years in development to make.

FTFA:

Currently, Nvidia's GT200 and G92b GPUs have already adopted a 55nm process

Eh? Does that mean some GTX 260/280's are 55nm and some are not?

They had a 55nm GT200 taped out months ago according to the INQ. There will be a fall refresh at the high end for nVidia if for only getting costs down.

Not yet. Nvidia is trying to get on the 55nm bandwagon to reduce cost and increase GPU speeds. I would expect some 55nm GTX260/280 SKUs in the near future.

I'm still rocking the comp in my sig. I'm not planning on buying another PC in a year or two so once I do build my next comp I've got a lot to look forward to. I completely missed out on 2 core cpus and I'll be going straight to 4 (or more if anything new comes out :p).

bro im in your boat..i got less ram though and a 7800gt with an amd 64 3700+ on an asrock uli..bro this thing can't even fucking run Vanguard: Saga of Heroes on 1024x768 on Very Low/Low Performance settings. I have trouble getting around the market place in Eudemons Online.

It's pathetic.

Good luck man.. 2 years?!?!?! you're gonna die. Unless all you do is surf the web. There's no way you'll be able to enjoy the newer games though

common now, I know nvidia is under pressure and I know both companies are always working on the next gen before they even released rv770 or gt200, we all know that, but that does not mean that they are done with the development, they are probably a year behind or 10 months the least before releasing a real next gen. By releasing a gt300 now even if they could, would only hurt themselves. both cards are plenty fast enough.

My 2x GTS G92s are working fine. Outside of me buying a 30" monitor or wanting to enhance my epeen, I don't have a reason to upgrade till some new games come out.

No doubt Nvidia is already working on next-gen tech. Its not like they could just take the old cards and slap different stickers on them. Oh wait...

What is GeForce 9800? 65nm refresh of GeForce 8800.

What is GTX 300, 55nm refresh of GTX 200?

I don't plan on play anything newer and shiny for some time. I'm a Senior in college and I'm graduating in 2 semesters and I'm working a full time internship this summer. I've got little to no time to play games anymore. Last semester I sold my xbox 360 to pay for books because I never use it. I play some TF2 like crazy though and It runs at a solid 60 to 30 fps but never gets unplayable and at low to medium settings the game run smooth as butter. I also plan on picking up Diablo 3 when it comes out to burn that game up but Id doubt it is going to stress my card that bad judging from the videos on the site.

I'm having to worry about saving up for a place after college and paying for insurance on my SUV and all these "new" bills i'm going to be getting heh. Computer still runs and functions so it serves its purpose. I'll probably drop 200 bucks on it soon to buy a new case and heatsink and update it so it looks decent because I'm going to turn it into a server once I build my newest monster.

Can you believe that the computer in my sig ran me 2600 dollars only 4 years ago? I bought it like a month after PCI-E came out onto the market. Good thing I saw that as a good purchase to make it last longer.
