how is the new ATi card doing so far?
Just read Nvidia may be allready working on a new gpu called the GT300. If this is true, Nvidia must really be panicking over the new ATi RV700 dual card. Supposedly the GT300 is built with a 45nm die process and uses GDDR5. Upgrade anyone?
If you believe rumors, the RV700 outperforms the GTX280 from 50% to 80% in tests.
I don't think anyone's saying that. If GT200 had RV770's die size (and thus price) and thermal characteristics, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The GT200 with tweaks and a shrink to 55nm and some faster clocks and lower cost wouldn't be chicken shit. The GT 200 is very capable, it needs some refinements obviously.

I do think that because of the launch prices, people kinda glossed over the GTX's and didn't really appreciate that this is still a potent GPU and looks to have potential.
In the worst case scenario, though, R700 will just be crossfire 4870 on a single card, meaning it'll be significantly faster than a 280. Hopefully the 'improved CF' rumors are true
2gb on a card doesnt mean shitEven if the R700 is just 4870 crossfire on a single card, this beast will be a daunting card for Nvidia to match or overcome soon. Imagine 2GB of GDDR5 on a single card! Wow.
2gb on a card doesnt mean shit
it doesnt really matter if its gddr5 or not because no single card out there is strong enough to utilize that much memory. its like having 512mb on an 8500gt or 1gb on an 8600gt. all the memory and all the bandwidth in the world doesnt mean crap if the card isnt strong enough to run at settings that would actually need that much memory.True 2gb on a videocard may mean shit, but we are talking about 2gb of GDDR5. Surely having this much bandwidth will improve performance at the larger resolutions; just like the higher end 8800 cards(like the 8800GTX) enjoyed. Nvidia knows the benefits of more GDDR ram hence the increased ram amount on the GTX260 and GTX280.

according to here... dont expect anything on the high end fron NVIDIA for the rest of the year
the next wave from NVIDIA will be 55nm versions of the 9600GT, 9500GT and 9400GS
Also the 9800GT will be launched as well
the gtx280 and 260 are it for 2008 on the upper end for the green team

IIRC, I read somewhere that TSMC is skiping 45nm and going to 40nm, so maybe GTX300 series is going to be 40nm. Anybody else heard about this?

I have not.
Companies like these are always at least a couple of generations ahead. The G80 was already in development when the the GeForce 5 series LAUNCHED. I wouldn't be surprised if they're working on the GT400 and GT500 too.
Yeah, it's not like they just sit down and put out a new design in 2 weeks. By the time the 280 was launched at 65nm, the 55nm version was already in production testing. The next series is probably 50% through development, and two generations ahead is probably starting development.
I'd call a 55nm refresh of the 280/260 "something on the high end". And according to Digi Times we'll see them late Q2/early Q3. (That's late September, early August for those of you who don't know your Qs. )
Currently, Nvidia's GT200 and G92b GPUs have already adopted a 55nm process

Eh? Does that mean some GTX 260/280's are 55nm and some are not?
What is GTX 300, 55nm refresh of GTX 200?
bro im in your boat..i got less ram though and a 7800gt with an amd 64 3700+ on an asrock uli..bro this thing can't even fucking run Vanguard: Saga of Heroes on 1024x768 on Very Low/Low Performance settings. I have trouble getting around the market place in Eudemons Online.
It's pathetic.
Good luck man.. 2 years?!?!?! you're gonna die. Unless all you do is surf the web. There's no way you'll be able to enjoy the newer games though
