Following a tease last week, the Dragon Age rumor mill has been ramping up. Some are speculating that new Dragon Age game announcement is coming at this week's Game Awards, and yesterday, Eurogamer seemingly confirmed the rumor with their anonymous sources. Unfortunately, VentureBeat reports that the game's actual release is a long way away. According to their sources, "Dragon Age 4 - or whatever name it'll carry - is at least three years away," and development has barely even started.

The game has spent more than a year in limbo at EA. In January, I reported that BioWare pushed aside Dragon Age to focus on Anthem. The studio started pre-production on a new Dragon Age, but EA threw out most of that work. At that time, the publisher was shifting its games to live services. That Dragon Age project wasn't going to fit into that business model. As a result of that reboot, Dragon Age writer Mike Laidlaw - who had an outline prepared for the new game - left BioWare.

I can't wait for "games as lives services" to kick the bucket.

Even if it is a game I like I loath the idea of a game that is ever changing. It is basically windows 10 the game. You get used to a mechanic and then it changes in an update. Thanks but no thanks.

I know I should be excited for a Dragon Age game, but I can't anymore. I have no faith left in the AAA games industry.

There are tolerable ways to pull it off.

Paradox is far from a saint, but they're a pretty good example IMO. The mechanics in Stellaris 2.2 barely resemble the original game, but the changes have mostly been for the better, and they're all optional. The base game plays fine without any of the DLC, and Paradox keeps old versions of the game archived, for those who want to go back.

Of course, we are talking about EA, who isn't exactly the best example of "games as a service"...

Dragon Age, and Mass Effect are in the same Universe. It would be cool for the next game to be about when the aliens came to earth. It would be like X-Com, but with Dragon Age gameplay.

An announcement of an announcement for an announcement. Are they that worried about Anthem?

They don't want none of that Fallout 76-style drama happening to Bioware.

Dragon Age: Origins, despite kinda clunky graphics, was freaking amazing. I loved that game soooo much. Dragon Age 2 definitely had problems. It came out so soon after Origins, and it played so differently from Origins, that I could not get into it until a few months before Inquisition dropped (and I made myself play it). It got good once I got over the hump.

Inquisition, on the other hand... While DA2 was generally panned by Origins fans, Inquisition seemed to be one of those polarizing games where a lot of fans loved it and a lot of fans hated it. I personally loved it. This game got me to purchase an AMD R9 290 for $400 so I could play at 1080p max detail. I'd NEVER spent that much on a graphics card before :). Hell, I even bought all the storyline DLC about a year after I beat it, and played through all of that - and I'd never done that before either. I tend to strongly dislike mid-game DLC because I hate having to beat a game again after doing the new stuff, so DLC usually gets skipped for games I buy and play at/near launch. I also tend to dislike RPGs that are more "Open World" - a reason I avoid Bethesda RPGs. Inquisition ate up every bit of my spare time for about a month and a half... THAT's how good Inquisition was.

I am SOOOOO looking forward to more Dragon Age. Unlike the prior two Dragon Age games, Inquisition is well set-up to have direct sequels, so I am really looking forward to continuing the story of Inquisition. EA had a great formula with it, and they would do well not to stray too far from it with this game-as-service bullshit. I can tolerate and even enjoy the evolving gameplay in a game like Stellaris, where largely you the other players you are with (if any) make your own story as you play, but I cannot see that strategy being successful at all in a plot-based RPG game. Hopefully EA has pulled their head out of their asses and realized that every game they want to make does not need to fit into the same mold as every other game make. These gimmicks aren't needed if the underlying game is both good and accessible.

Excellent if EA kept "hands off" so BioWare can get the most out of the design as well as more "ability" to tweak frostbite (or not use at all if they see fit) though it is EA whom I have "little faith in"

Absolutely loved DA Origins, tactical mode was awesome, so was the click to see "hidden" such as treasure chest, click button loot X area, graphics and play were extremely well done IMHO (still a solid game)

DA 2 was "ok" not nearly as good for ME, pretty good story line though, though not same "feel" like story mattered near as much.

DA: Inquisition all great though the tactical mode was a huge step backward from Origins (forced to use frostbite made this major issue according to BW) also the inability to click one button to loot X area, see secrets etc.

I myself was not overly fond (in DA:I) of the craft/scavenge for things (plants etc) mainly because it seemed you get as good drops as you do from craft so it seemed mainly pointless, though the overall gameplay, smoothness and "look" was extremely well done.

I thought MA Andromeda was overall pretty awesome more so prior to that first update which broke many things that worked "perfect" at least for me, look forward to the next instalment of that as well (not the DLC crud though lol)

    -----------------------------------------------------
    ---------------------

Wish BioWare good luck, hopefully EA "sees" they have a great dev here and let them have as much full control as possible (to avoid problems, to avoid needing to patch after patch) and resist the urge to DLC by stripping contents etc.

If anything the hardware available in the next 2 to 3 years is going to make a world of difference for gaming that much is damned sure.

I have hope for some of these things, supposedly some of the new tech that EA is building into its engines for the new DA, ME, and of course Anthem allows them to rapidly and cheaply fix things like quest bugs, dialogue, and drops, even add/remove NPC's in real time for special events and such with out needing to reboot servers or issue patch updates so lets see how/if that actually works. But the ideas behind it got me a little excited.

With EA's recent failures and having Disney kick their teeth in over some of their practices with the Star Wars games, as well as the lawsuits and legal grey areas surrounding loot boxes, I hope some of EA's upper management have learned a lesson or two.

It's a small hope, but loosing at this point almost $4 Billion is bound to cause some shake ups because if EA understands anything it's money.

If I'm not saving the world, it's not worth getting out of bed in the morning. Kirkwall can burn to the ground and the whole of its entire sodding church for all I care.

I have really enjoyed the Dragon Age series...I played the hell our of all of them, especially inquisitions, and I am not sure why, it was glitchy as hell, and alot of the same point a/b quests in repeat.

From what I read, they pulled coders off of this to push Anthem faster. Now that Anthem feedback is looking a little sketchy, maybe that wasn't a good decision and they're trying to course correct.
