New computer chair

I've always been a fan of La-Z-Boy office chairs. They tend to be a bit wider than most and their build quality is superior than plastic chairs.

Are Steelcase chairs any good for the price? I was looking at them for my new chair.

Noblechairs has the Epic on Black Friday sale for $250, if it's half as good as my Icon it would be well worth it! Also some Hero models for $300 or less. These are well built high quality chairs for a reasonable price. I have 4 years on the leather Icon and see no reason why it won't last 10 or longer.

I think I paid $140 or so a few years back for it. I find it nice for the price. The wire mesh isn't the softest compared to something like a Herman Miller from what I have read, but it isn't $1000 either. There are a few snags in the wire mesh, but nothing has really come apart. Some of the cushion on the bottom has worn slightly with a few small bits falling out, but nothing that damages the structural integrity. I think it will last another few years. I assumed it was a 5 year chair, and for the price it is a good value. Much more breathable than cheap leather chairs. You can also remove the arm and head rest, which I don't like on chairs.

However if you are taller you may find the chair won't support your back well.

Because I work from home
^^THIS^^ When I started WFH during Rona, I went & bought a mid-tier Lazy Boy (~$250) and love it, it is still as comfortable as it was on day 1, and still looks brand new, even though I'm sittin in a ~14 hrs/day between work & personal use....

Ok, that's it, I'm getting a Lazy Boy chair. I hope it's as good as everyone says because I don't know what to do with my back, it's killing me.

I bought a used herman miller on FB marketplace. You can find some between $150-300ish for the older models. Honestly making an investment on you back. Well worth to me not having my back hurt at the end of a work day.

I had the $300 ish La-Z-Boy model sold at Costco ("leather", fixed arms, high back). It was a step up from the $99 Amazon Basics chair it replaced, but long term the cushion was still showing the signs of daily use and there isn't much adjustment to those style of chairs. Recline lock/unlocked and chair height is all you get. For the price, I was expecting more. My only real annoyance, was the chrome logo on the back wasn't even straight.

Having said that, like with all other brands, there are various models and thus price points. So simply saying "I'm getting a La-Z-Boy chair" for sure doesnt mean that you may be getting a chair similar to me or any other commentor.

Once you go cloth you never go back. Leather is uncomfortable and creepy, pleather doesn't last very long, and mesh is scratchy or splits. Cloth lasts longer, is breathable, is comfortable in all climates, and it's easy to repair or replace. Tear it? Repair it easy. Want a new look? Reupholster it in an afternoon for $20 worth of fabric.

Cloth last longer? On what planet? Real leather is the way to go unless you live in a world without A/C. I have a 10 year old Steelcase Leap 2 that looks as good as it did on day way and it has HEAVY use.

Buy once, cry once. Herman Miller.

I got spoiled by them in the office, and bought one when I started working from home

I guess you've never used leather chairs....

Many over the years. With a little care, they can last a very long time.

You listed several benefits of cloth, lasts longer is not one of them, and cloth is more likely to get dirty/stained. We have the problem at work. If you want or have the skill to reupholster, you could also do that with a leather chair.

I had a steelcase leap2. In cloth. The cloth outlasted the chair. Which lasted about 12.5 years. Good leather is not really more durable than upholstery grade textiles without proper care and conditioning. Most leather seating surfaces these days is not good leather. Much like leather resists stains, there are also certain kinds of mild abuse that cloth shrugs off, that leather deals with worse.

Also, I currently have a used steelcase V1, and it is a much more robust chair than the V2. By a lot.
