AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+

which one is the best for OCing.

please recommend a motherboard around 100

thanks for the help

Neither.

If overclocking is your goal, go with an Intel build. The $69 E2140 can easily be OC'd to 3.2Ghz and at that clock speed, beats either AMD CPU clock for clock. So I recommend going Intel.

What's your budget for the mobo, RAM and CPU altogether? Will you also be needing a HSF?

sounds good, i gotta buy the hsf and prob around 100 for the mobo would be good maybe a little more, as for ram i think i got something lying around

For the mobo you can get either The Abit IP35-E or the Gigabyte P35-DS3L for about $100. Both are popular choices if you will be using a single video card and no raid. Both boards are very stable and overclock well. If you go with a e2140 I would get at least DDR2 800 so you can get it to 400x8 at 1:1.

A good HSF is the Thermalright Ultra 120 paired with a good 120mm fan such as a Yate Loon. If you don't want to spend that much on a HSF then this is a good choice.

and to add to vtx suggestion, the thermalright ultima 90 is also a good heatsink thats cheaper than the thermalright 120 extreme

I agree, the Ultima90 is great. Here are some links, including the Ultima90:

$35 - Scythe SCNJ-1100P Ninja Plus Rev.B CPU HSF (optional $7 Thermalright LGA775 Bolt-Thru-Kit; recommended esp. for quadcore usage)
$45 - Tuniq Tower 120 CPU HSF
$46 - Thermalright Ultima 90 CPU HS + Panaflo Hydrowave Fan, FBA09A12M - Z ($3)

Though, you really don't need those higher priced units. If those are out of your budget, the AC Freezer 7 Pro or Cooler Master TX-2 are very inexpensive and should do the trick for an E2140.

$22 - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler
$22 - Cooler Master RR-CCH-L9U1-GP 92mm Hyper TX2 ($15MIR)

Don't forget some Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Cooling MX-2 thermal compound.
