Hi all. I'm building a new home server to replace my two ageing, and noisy, Dell T3400 workstations and it would be great to hear your thoughts.
My goal is producing a reasonably priced, good performing, VMware host server that is as silent as possible.

Specs:

1x Lian Li PC-V2130 case (holds 15x 3.5" + 4x SSDs) - PC-V2130B
1x Supermicro X10DRi-T motherboard (DP and 2x Intel10GbE) - MBD-X10DRi-T
1x Antec HCP1300 Platinum PSU (Platinum rated and quiet!) - HCP1300
2x Crucial 32GB (16GB x2) CL15 DDR4-2133 ECC 1.2V - CT2C16G4RFD4213
2x Intel Xeon E5-2620V3 6 Core CPU - BX80644E52620V3
2x Noctua NH-U12DX i4 heatsink/fan (Narrow ILM) - NH-U12DX i4
2x LSI 8 Port 6Gbps MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i with BBU (from previous servers) - LSI00212
2x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD (from previous servers) - MZ-7PD256
2x Intel I350-T4V2 4-port Ethernet Server Adapter (from previous servers) - I350T4V2BLK
4x StarTech 3.5 inch Hard Drive Mounting Bracket Adapter for 5.25 inch Bay

Notes:
I'd get better performance by using 4x8GB for each CPU but I went for future upgradeability rather than best RAM performance.
Still deciding what HDDs to get and what capacity, to build RAID 6 array.

If anyone has put together a similar build and/or has any suggestions it would be great to hear them. Thanks.

That's a nice build for sure, and 10gig on the mobo is awesome... wish I would have gone that route.

I'd ditch the 840 Pros and swap to something that has power-loss protection, that's the only thing I notice in a server that I'd want to change and if you can afford it and they make them I go for highest frequency CPU for the # of cores you want. Then again you may have a UPS that can tell it to shutdown nicely... if not I'd go that route TOO.
 
Sounds OK, but in all honesty, I'd probably just go for a single CPU server (with a higher clock speed) vs the low clocked duallie. Get an E5-1660 V3 with a the server board of your choice. You could even get the Asrock X99 10Gb WS board, which should work well and allow a small overclock to use the processor's headroom (if you're so inclined). Even at default clocks, it should be quite quick and will give you better single threaded performance than the duallie and multithreaded performance that's still very competitive with the duallie.

I run quite a few VMs, both for work and personal projects, host a web development environment and web servers that my bro uses, run a pfSense firewall, home server, etc.
Also nice that it could function as a work DR site in a pinch. Spin up the VMs, re-point DNS and you're done.
So, more cores are preferable to clock speed in my case.

As for the 840 Pros, yes, I already had these so would be silly not to use them. Will probably use them for VMware Flash Read Cache. (http://www.vmware.com/uk/products/vsphere/features/flash)
I fortunately do have a UPS that all this runs on, an APC Smart-UPS SMT2200i with AP9631 management card.

I built something similar at work with an Asus 2u bare-bone and dual 2011v1 2687w. Your system looks nice. One thing I might suggest is that if you ever plan on upgrading the cpus, you may want to choose a single 12core now so that you could double it later, but that would be Intel Xeon E5-2670 at $1670 and double your current cost of cpus. I also setup a WD RED 3TB Raid 10 array with 6 drive that is rocking and rolling for a database, but if you can afford it go with SAS drives ;)

You really have loads for 12-core home server?? For networking with 2x Intel10GbE)???
 
How's the setup going for you?

I ended up getting 2x E5-2620 v1 system setup... wishing I had the v3 of these chips as my 28C v3 system uses 40% less power than the 12C V1 system.

I am planning a similar build. Were you able to able to fit the NH-U12DX i4 heatsinks facing the rear of the case rather than facing the memory?

Wouldnt NH-D9DX i4 3U be a better choice?

They're facing upwards and vent the air out of the top grill on my case.
How did your build go?
