Hello all bare with me here as I have not built since 2010 or 2011. A little out of the loop but slowly reading up.

So I moved into a tiny ass apartment with my wife and my large Corsair 300t case is just to big (as well as decreasing in performance with games) so I figured it's a great time to build. I've always wanted to build a small compact PC too.

I like to game casually; ie Rainbow Six: Siege, Overwatch, LoL, etc. Heavy browsing and streaming. I do not do any sort of editing and rendering and what not. It's mainly for muh vidya. I also will not be overclocking at all. I'm looking to keep the pc relatively quiet so any fan recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Budget: $1,200 (I do have some wiggle room if needed to go over.)

What I have:

I will be salvaging my GTX 980 since it's pretty new and I do have a 27" Asus 1440p 144hz monitor (freesync) (I bought it before I got my nvidia card) that I will be doing my gaming on. Also I have a 3 TB WD black drive I'll be using too to store all the things on.

What I'm looking at:

Case: https://www.ncases.com/
I've had this case in my sight for a long time. I don't mind putting the extra couple dollars in for it.

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-Z270N-Gaming5

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700
Help I'm sure there are cheaper options for what I need it for.

PSU: Corsair SF650
I'm almost certain the GTX 980 will be ok with this PSU

Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H100i
I'm not sure of any low profile cpu coolers. Recommendations would be great

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB

Storage: Samsung 850 PRO 512GB

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Going to try to build with in the next month or 2.

Well, here are my thoughts:

1. If you don't plan to overclock, that CLC is serious overkill. Use this instead:

CM Hyper 212 EVO: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...99&cm_re=hyper_212_evo-_-35-103-099-_-Product

2. Kaby Lake CPU's benefit from faster RAM. So go with this set instead:

Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 (8x2): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233852&cm_re=ddr4-_-20-233-852-_-Product

3. Switch out that 850 Pro for an 850 EVO (it really isn't worth the extra money to get the Pro anymore)

850 EVO 512GB: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147373

4. Based on your needs, I doubt you'd benefit from the extra threads of the i7.

i5 7600k: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...19117728&cm_re=i5_7600-_-19-117-728-_-Product

- Saves you about $200 and just makes a hell of a lot more sense ;)

Now, when you say streaming, are you implying watching streams or actually "streaming-streaming"?

If you tend to broadcast streams while gaming, then go with the 7700 over the 7600k....

The OP will have to re-think the choice of CPU coolers with the case that he is considering:

That case restricts the maximum air cooler height to only 130mm total but that Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO requires at least 160mm of clearance to even fit.

Oh cool. Saving money is good. Do you have any recommendations for quiet fans?

Not to worried about look since they'll be in a small ass case. Thank you! I'll look in to both of those.

There isn't much difference in a sixth or 5th generation core i7 processor you can save more money on that. Get a SSD as well because that is what you actually need. Youy have ample RAM for now. Yes it's a good build IMO. A 256SSD will be good.

I love it when people post "budget gaming build " and then proceed to spend $1200 on the box without a video card.

A real budget build would be to manage with half that much.

Here's the catch:

The OP must stick with a tower case in order to save that much money. You see, SFF cases and the usually requisite SFX power supply units and mini ITX motherboards tend to be more expensive than big towers, ATX power supply units and micro ATX or standard ATX motherboards of equivalent features, performance and quality.

Actually, the 5th generation i7 processors have never really become popular because they were of the Broadwell architecture with its outdated DDR3-only memory controller and its older LGA 1150 socket. I assume that you meant the sixth or 7th generation Core i7 processor, which both use the same socket and the same DDR4 memory controller.

I say budget because my rig that I built in 2010 was 2700 dollars. So this is me "budgeting". Also my budget is 1200. Not having a budget would be "I'm going to build a computer regardless of price."
