went to best buy to help my parents buy a new 4k tv (their old rear-projection based mitsubishi finally died).

best buy had a 43" sharp 4k tv with hdmi 2.0 for $425. i thought... 43" 4k @ $425?! and i bought it.

so i hook it up to my pc (gtx 770 which supports up to hdmi 1.4a) and lo and behold, i can enable 4k @ 60hz at YCbCr 4:2:0. no custom resolutions or anything. sure, im not getting full color, but when'd this happen? I thought 1.4a couldnt do 4k @ 60hz at all.

is the 770 actually outputting 60hz? i can select 30hz as well, but 60hz definitely feels much better (which makes me think it might actually be outputting 60hz).

what wizardry is this?

Newer 4K displays can adjust the resolution and give u 60hz at 4:2:0 instead of 30hz 4:4:4 on HDMI 1.4. I think it was supported on a recent Nvidia Driver. Something about freeing up bandwidth on the HDMI 1.4 spec by downclocking the color profiles or something.

NVidia driver finagling drops to 4:2:0 if on 1.4a. I own the same monitor I think. Another thing to try on that screen is overclocking. I am able to get mine up to 135-140hz @ 1080p.

good to know. definitely a nice surprise since 30hz is basically unusable for games.

hopefully i can get full 4:4:4 when i get a GPU with hdmi 2.0.

im already spoiled with 4k though. dont want to do 1080p, even with aggressive downsampling. if anything i need (somehow) to reduce input lag. even in game mode with all post-processing disabled its very high (~70ms or something).

im used to CRTs and plasmas (<1ms). but eh, for ~$400, maybe ill just use it for slower paced games.

ps its the sharp 43" UB30.
