300, im close, most likely its my router and cable modem causing my extra 60..

Dash- I gotta chat with you regarding email servers and a couple domain things, thats for next week tho.

I combined networking and cars today, how you ask? I still need a picture, but im using network cable to hold up a brake rotor and caliper on a 2002 dodge stratus xD

I want to do an email server for my mail and such, i dont have a local domain yet, but thinking of linking it to my gmail or something...

You'll want/need a static IP otherwise you'll be on a blacklist almost immediately.

Dash- I know nothing of setting them up.. im still really nub- more of a hardware guy.

You can use your ISP's SMTP service as a smart host to still be able to use a dynamic IP. Or at least I'm able to do that with Time Warner.

Dynamic IP shouldn't be so bad.. its not like mine changes everyday.. I think it changes once a month.. if I restart untangle.

Same boat i guess, im a hardware guy 100% not a software guy at all, i mean i can figure things out and get things working from manuals or instruction but on my own im ok at it.

now hardware thats where i advance, i can take a lexmark all in one x printer apart with no manual and put it back together no problem...

I hate printers and copiers, always have, always will.

Doesn't matter if your address stays the same for even a year, it's usually the DHCP Block that gets blacklisted. I had regular DHCP WAN addresses that would stick for a year with my ISP and still would be blacklisted. I got a Static IP from them, no longer an issue. More spam blacklists will block any DHCP range of Public IPs.

New Hyper-V Server build. Decided that my Poweredge 1950 was using too much power and I wanted to go to 32 GB of RAM, but DDR2 FBDIMMs are crazy expensive. What you see is an Intel D65AL S1155 Motherboard with an i3 2120 and (currently) 16 GB of RAM. I'll increase it to 32 GB next month when I get my "allowance" from myself again. I also have a Norco 2U case on the way to put it in. It'll be virtually silent. I have eSATA drives for the VMs to run on. It works really well, I'm impressed. My CPU is never pegged either. To be honest it's idle most of the time. It beats the dual quad-xeons in my Dell. I'm happy with how it's performance is.

To upgrade to 32 GB of RAM in a 1950, it's around 350-400 dollars for 8x4 GB FBDIMMs. For 32 GB of DDR3 1333 for the new server, it's 4 x 8 GB at $50 per stick.

Ctek - No, I used to work for one though. I live in SK. New management bought us and the local MicroAge since then went down the shitter. A bunch of us techs left and they now have flunkies and yeah... went downhill quickly. I'm glad I got out before it got too bad though.

Yep. The rack itself is not even fully populated - I have not unpacked all my cisco gear yet, just the essentials to get a networking running here.

I have to get some pictures off my phone later of the progress I have done in the last two days framing the server closet, etc.

I just surfed through the internet, then I noticed that the fiber optic cable from Level (3) to Amsterdam are routed through our front garden ...

Now my question ...

Do you think it is expensive to connect to it?

If you setup a datacenter with routers capable of peering with level3 then it should be pretty cheap :)

They aren't an 'ISP' ... my comment is basically saying there is no chance in them dealing with you ... if they did it would cost loads or you would have to offer them peering to somewhere they don't already have .. etc.

A connection to a fibre backbone like that will be thousands a month easily.
You also have your power and cooling costs, again, cost depends on amount of servers, size of room, environmental conditions.
Then you need to buy the networking and server gear.

Based on the cost of the fiber connection alone, you would need quite a few high paying customers to offset the cost which means more servers and more cooling, etc. It would be almost impossible to make a go of it, if you even could at all.

Perhaps my father is sponsoring me, then the server of his company are with me.
A few friends of mine are also interesirt it.
There is a very large field, villeicht it would build very interesant there ne small town, with all my friends and we share the connection. at 10 Gbit + this should be no problem.

lots of work, lots of research to build your own... PLUS it' AINT CHEAP. where you do fail, it will always fail. :(

to build a datacenter the biggest cost is the substation. That's where the company I worked for had to quit planning.

Another update on our 3CX VoIP phone system.

We use sooooo many minutes, it's like a phone is glued to everybodys face.

However 3CX on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is rock solid. It plays very well with our Polycom phones, and doesn't mind the occasional Yealink.

All of that coupled with nexVortex for SIP trunking services and we're kicking ass. :)

Also since this is networking related, I should point out that my HP ProCurve 2520's and 2520G's are rock solid across all four sites.
