So im helping a co-worker build a gaming pc for her son. From what shes told me it needs to flashy, lots of lights and able to play high end games. She wants to spend around $1000, I can probably push it a bit higher if its worth it. This includes everything but accessories; mouse, keyboard, monitor, headset. So just the case and everything in it. I've been out of the game for a while so I need your guys help.

Thanks in advance.

This isn't bad, but memory on Ryzen should *for sure* be added in pairs for the dual channel capability, and the 6 GB 1060 should be chosen for better longevity over the 3 GB edition. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XG6zTH is a modified list.

Additionally, you might save money and skip the NVME SSD and just go with a standard SATA model. This would get you a bigger SSD and you can probably drop the mechanical drive at that point. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/khxMtJ is the modified list with the SATA SSD.

Also, I would save the money and buy your Win 10 key from the guy that sells keys on the Hardforum FS/FT thread. It's cheaper by quite a bit! And if you're not going to overclock, feel free to use the stock fan that comes with the Ryzen CPU and not buy the Hyper 212 in the list. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FWChcc is that list, and it drives the price actually below $1000.

This system will play any modern game, though it's definitely on the mid-range level of things in terms of overall performance. It will *not* acceptably drive many games at their "ultra" settings at resolutions above 1080p, and it's certainly not fit for 4K consumption.

I like lukart's build a lot actually. It would probably be faster in today's games, thanks to the faster CPU cores on the i5. That said, the Ryzen platform may have longer legs, as the R5 has 6 CPU cores, which is nice, and the system can upgrade to a R7 for 8 cores in the future if you want. His system has 16 GB of RAM though at a good price, and his SSD selection is better for the dollar for sure.

I would consider a hybrid - his memory selection and SSD with the rest of the base system. The Ryzen based system will be slightly slower in some games since each individual CPU core is slower than those on the i5, but when games use more than 4 cores effectively the Ryzen will pull ahead.

The cost is ~$1000 of this build.

This gaming pc guide might help

You can add a 256GB SSD instead of the hard drive if you want, that would be much faster. Or you decrease the processor to Core i5, it isn't much of a difference if that boy is not interested in overclocking. The casing above chosen is the lowest priced. if you want you can go with a better one. Finally, get an RX 480 instead of the 1060 - low cost and better product.
