Well so far, I've gone through two cheap ones this weekend. the first barely worked and was HORRIDLY uncomfortable, the second one no one could hear me on. I was looking around on Newegg and the Steel Series over the head look incredibly nice, but I have no clue. Any recommendations? Thanks guys.

i'm rockin the razor 5.1 ones with built in woofers. cant remember what they are called, but they are great.

huge!!! but very very comfy and lightweight for the size. sound quality is great, no buzzing or hissing. and each channel is hardware adjustable for volume on the neat in-line control fob. and having that much bass on your head rocks.

audio snobs have said that they dont offer competitive sound quality for the money you pay, but honestly, they sound awesome to me. especially if you are using them for games.

That guide from extreme tech had some useful info.

Frankly, in my experience the best setup is a solid sound card paired with a good circumaural headset that utilizes 3.5mm audio jacks.

OP, do you have a sound card or do you use onboard audio? That will really help you in making your decision.

I gave those a try, but was suprisingly pleased with them. The longest I've worn them was 3.5 hours straight playing tf2, but they never even started to get uncomfortable. The mic is super clear, the audio is great, and I never hear my wife yelling for me in the room beside me :) I'd definitely recommend them, because it's not often I find headphones that don't hurt my ears after awhile.

I am using onboard audio right now. I probably will want to get a nice card since the onboard just doesn't seem to be doing it for me. I am somewhat of an audiophile.

another good option, forget head sets, get your self a good pair of nice comfertable headphones and a boom/desktop mic.

I use a pair of Senn HD555's and a desktop mic and it works amazingly well, the headphones are so comfertable I wore em for 6 hours straight over the weekend and never once noticed any discomfort. I will never get a headset again.

I was also thinking of getting a Bluetooth adapter and just using one of those. I'm not sure. thats why I posted here.

Well, I did not want to spend hundreds on my sound card/headset combo.

I opted to buy an X-fi Xtreme Music sound card a while ago, and just recently decided to go with the Plantronics 377 headset. Works beautifully. X-Fi sound cards make any headset sound wonderful. I used to use a pair of 20 dollar logitechs and they even sound awesome :D

The RAZER Barracuda HP-1 Razer looks good. It even comes with the HD connector. I have that on my sound card but never tried it.

The Razr Barracude is what I have and they are freakin' fantastic headphones. They are so comfortable you don't even feel like there's anything on your head really. They have good directional sound and are very loud and very, very clear audio wise. I'd highly recommend for anyone looking for great gaming headphones.

SteelSeries Siberia is where it's at.

It's INSANELY comfortable and lasts forever. Great sound too!
Second that. My Icemat (the original brand) just broke due to someone hitting me (lol), so they paid for my new SteelSeries, arrving next week. Feels like parting with an old friend though.

Anyway, sound is great for movies and gaming, maybe not so much for music. But that's really the only complaint I have with it.

Best gaming headset I have ever owned hands down costs $20.

It seems insane but this literally is the best pair I have owned.
PLANTRONICS GAMECOM1

I have the same set, but the USB DSP model and it kicks ass. The mic is truly awesome as all Plantronics mics are and always have been, and they absolutely rock with sound quality, especially because of the 32 bit DSP these use.

The specific model I have is this one:

Got mine for about $40 when I got lucky and caught 'em on sale at Circuit City last summer. Who knows, if you check into a Circuit City now you might get 'em for even less during their liquidation... worth checking out.

Highly recommended.

I have a Plantronics Counterstrike headset that is very similar to this set but was more expensive. It was a great headset until one night it, quite literally, fell apart. I did manage to duct tape the outer ears back together but the microphone can't be used anymore, they are now only listening type headphones. So I'd be a bit wary of Plantronics, going by the comments others have posted on newegg it seems they have durability issues. They do sound great though and are light as a feather on your head.

For a bog standard headset which is reliable and good build quality with good sound, go for a set of Sennheisers. They do a good gaming range which come with stereo headphones and a mic both really high quality sound and recording, with 2 2.5m jacks and additional USB dongle.

This is good becuase you dont need a soundcard in your PC, the little dongle for the USB port has its own built in sound device so you just plug them in and windows detects the mic and headset and you can select them and use them straight off the bat, no drivers or installs needed just plug and play, soundcard or not.
